STORY

The AMISOM Force Commander Lt. Gen. Silas Ntigurirwa has challenged
members of the Somali National Army that have been trained in different
capacities to utilize the skills acquired and champion change in their country.

The Force Commander made the call during a pass out ceremony for SNA
soldiers that have completed a training course in different aspects including
Human Rights and Patriotism at the Jazeera camp.
The training was attended by 250 SNA soldiers and was conducted by AMISOM
in conjunction with the European Union.
Lt. Silas Ntigurirwa re-affirmed the commitment of the mission to building the
capacity of the Somali National Army, an aspect key to the AMISOM exit strategy.

Speaking after the ceremony, the commander of the EU training team in Somalia
Brig. Gen. Massimo Mingiardi noted that a well-trained and professional army is
at the core of stability in any country.

We know that the key of success is to have a unified army and well trained.
Thats why the efforts of the European Union and AMISOM are very important to
achieve this subject, he said.

The Force Commander Lt. Gen Silas Ntigurirwa added that AMISOM troops will
continue working with the SNA in different operations as part of the mentorship
and training program. He challenged the trainees to be exemplary to their
colleagues and to strive to protect the sovereignty of their country.

You have to be a model; you have to make a difference. You have to be a model
for the others who will come after you and keep in mind that the best future of
your country is in your hands, he noted.

The Chief of support and supply in the Somali National Army Lt. Gen. Abdulkadir
Moalim Nor challenged the trainees to utilize the skills they acquired and ensure
that they put them to good use.

When you are deployed back to your units, you have to teach the colleagues in
your units what you have learnt here. You have been blessed with this kind of
training the AU/EU team has given you. The enemy does not have this kind of
training, so you have to be proud of yourselves, he added.

Some of the trainees said the course material was highly practical and provided
knowledge crucial to professionalism of the SNA.

The training that I have acquired here is very good for me and for the good of
the nation and the things I have studied here, such as how to use the weapon,
different kinds of small arms and the main concept of how to defend my
country, said Abdulahi Mahamud, a trainee.

I am very happy with the collaboration of AMISOM and the European Union
because of the support they give us. For instance they have trained me and now
am training others and thats good for the Somalis, added Muumin Xuseen,
another trainee.

AMISOM continuously trains members of the SNA with a view of boosting their
potential and ensuring their ability to take charge of national security.
