When the words that David spoke were heard,
they repeated them before Saul; and he sent for
him. 32 David said to Saul, “Let no one’s heart fail
because of him; your servant will go and fight
with this Philistine.” 33 Saul said to David, “You
are not able to go against this Philistine to fight
with him; for you are just a boy, and he has been
a warrior from his youth.” 34 But David said to
Saul, “Your servant used to keep sheep for his
father; and whenever a lion or a
bear came, and took a lamb
from the flock, 35 I went after it
and struck it down, rescuing the
lamb from its mouth; and if it
turned against me, I would
catch it by the jaw, strike it
down, and kill it. 36 Your servant
has killed both lions and bears;
and this uncircumcised
Philistine shall be like one of

David said, “The Lord, who

Philistine and removes this
disgrace from Israel? Who is
this uncircumcised Philistine
that he should defy the armies
of the living God?” 27 They

“This is what will be done for
the man who kills him.” 28
When Eliab, David’s oldest
brother, heard him speaking
with the men, he burned with
anger at him and asked, “Why
have you come down here?
And with whom did you leave
those few sheep in the desert? I know how
conceited you are and how wicked your heart is;
you came down only to watch the battle.” 29
“Now what have I done?” said David. “Can’t I
even speak?” 30 He then turned away to
someone else and brought up the same matter,
and the men answered him as before. 31 What
David said was overheard and reported to Saul,

tunic. He put a coat of armor on him and a
bronze helmet on his head. 39 David fastened on
his sword over the tunic and tried walking
around, because he was not used to them.
“I cannot go in these,” he said to Saul, “because
I am not used to them.” So he took them off.

Then he took his staff in his hand, chose five

pouch of his shepherd’s bag and, with his sling in
his hand, approached the Philistine. 41Meanwhile,
the Philistine, with his shield bearer in front of
him, kept coming closer to David. 42 He looked
David over and saw that he was only a boy,
ruddy and handsome, and he despised him.

He said to David, “Am I a dog, that you come
at me with sticks?” And the Philistine cursed

Open Letter to Oprah from Ali Baghdadi
on Her Visit to Palestine
Dear Oprah,
I
am so glad that you will be visiting my
country, Palestine. I wish I could be there
to greet you. Certainly, despite the genocide
and ethnic cleansing they face every hour of the
day, my people will be there. They will be happy
to see you and will receive you with open arms.
Unfortunately, I cannot be there! My family
tree and my roots in Palestine go back to time
immemorial, long before Islam, Christianity and
Judaism came into being. Last July, I was given
entry to my homeland only as a tourist, with
an American passport and a Japanese camera.
Though I am 70 years old, I had to stand at the
Israeli immigration window at Sheikh Hussein
entry point on the Jordan River for over seven
hours before I was allowed in to visit my home
and family. Months earlier, Canadian Jews were
processed and given Israeli citizenship to my
land while they were 35,000 feet high over the
Atlantic.
Arabs, throughout history, are known to be
hospitable to their guests. You will be no excep-
tion. For many centuries, Jews escaped the dis-
crimination and death they were subjected to in
Europe, and found safety and refuge among us.
Muslims believe in Christianity and Judaism. The
Quran states there is no distinction between Mu-
hammad, Jesus and Moses. Therefore, according

to our Islamic teachings, all are prophets of God
and all must be honored and respected.
You must know that Zionist Jews from all over
the world, particularly Europe, came to my Pal-
estine, not as guests, but as settlers and occupiers
in the early part of the 20th century. The natives
were referred to as “snakes” from which the land
must be cleansed. In 1948 they occupied 72% of
my land and emptied out over 500 Arab (Chris-
tian and Muslim) towns and villages. In 1967
they occupied the remaining 28%. Six million of
us have been living in refugee camps in Jordan,
Syria, and Lebanon for the last fifty nine years,
even though the United Nations ordered the
Israeli government to allow us to return (1948
UN resolution 194).
Our Palestine is so beautiful. You will enjoy it.
It is a museum. So many civilizations have mixed
and melted there. Throughout history, invaders
came and finally left. We remained. We survived.
As we offered the Crusaders who occupied our
holy lands for two hundred years, Jews can stay
and share our land, if they wish to live in a free
and democratic Palestine that respects the rights
of all, regardless of their religion, race, or ethnic-
ity. Those who refuse and insist to live in an
apartheid state will inevitably pack up and return
to their native lands.
Please, visit Jaffa, Haifa, Acre, and Nazareth
within the so-called Green Line. Take pleasure

in the aroma of our orange orchards on the
Mediterranean coast. Drive to the top of the
Mount of al-Carmel and enjoy its beauty and the
splendid view.
Elie Wiesel, your host, will take you to the
Holocaust Memorial in Jerusalem to show you
the crimes committed by the Germans against
the Jews. Undoubtedly, when the visit is com-
pleted, he will attempt to usher you away; but if
you look down across the valley you can see the
site of the massacre of the village of Deir Yassin.
Hundreds of armless and helpless Arab men,
women, and children were shot to death, by the
Irgun, Wiesel’s associates and friends, in April
1948. The remaining women survivals were pa-
raded in trucks through the streets of Jerusalem.
I can never forget this scene, just can’t. My fam-
ily, among the thousands of Palestinians, had to
flee. “NEVER AGAIN” are two hollow words.
They don’t apply to non-Jews.
Oprah, I beg you not to forget visiting Gaza
and the West Bank where over three million of
us still live. All attempts made to force them
leave and run for their lives have failed. Take
pictures of the 700 kilometer apartheid wall and
reflect on the political messages of the graffiti it
displays. I was struck by one of these messages
at the entry to Bethlehem. “Thou not steal.”
Confiscation of our lands, however, continues
until this day.

before they are allowed to cross. Witness the
harassment and degradation my people are
subjected to. A 20-minute journey from a village
to another takes seven hours. Many pregnant
Arab women have lost their babies while wait-
ing for clearance on their way to hospitals. There
are over 550 of these checkpoints that divide
our land into ghettos in the West Bank alone.
Though the water we get does not meet our
basic needs, notice the swimming pools Israelis
enjoy in settlements built on our stolen lands.
Of course, the highlight of your trip will be
the performance of pilgrimage in Jerusalem, the
city of Jesus. It is also the city of my birth. The
school I attended is the site of the palace where
he received his death sentence. My home is only
a couple of blocks away from the Via Dolorosa,
the path he took to his crucifixion. Walk through
the narrow and curved alleys where he walked.
I did that without interruption for 23 years.
Those days are gone.
Oprah, stand on top of the Mount of Olives,
as I often did, and experience the glory and maj-
esty of Jerusalem, its al-Aqsa Mosque, the Dome
of the Rock, the Holy Sepulcher, and other
houses of worship. Observe the magnificence of
the ancient wall built by Muslims to defend and
protect these priceless treasures. Hear al-azan,
the Muslim call for prayer, as it joins in unison
with bells coming from Christian churches. What
an eternal symphony!

miles to the east. Go down the steps of the
cave that leads to the tomb of Lazarus, whom
Jesus raised from the dead. The small dark
room on top of the cave was the shelter my
mother, my three younger sisters, and I took
after we escaped the carpet bombing of the old
city of Jerusalem in 1948. My Muslim cousin
is the custodian of the holy cave, a great honor
that his family inherited from a generation to
a generation. His father, an illiterate, was able
to recite to Christian worshipers the story of
Lazarus, in English, French, German, Spanish,
Russian, Greek, and other foreign languages.
Don’t miss the opportunity to drive five miles
south to Bethlehem. Feel the ecstasy of enter-
ing the most dramatic cave in which the Virgin
Mary delivered her beautiful Palestinian baby.
During the Second Intifadah, the uprising
against Israeli occupation, Muslim and Chris-
tian activists, chased by the Israeli death squads,
were given refuge in the church.
You may go and see the Jordan River where
Jesus was baptized, only a thirty minute drive.
Beware; don’t plunge into the dirty and pol-
luted waters. The river is almost dry. Its waters
were diverted by the Israelis. Five miles west,
near Jericho, you will pass by the Mount of
Temptation where Jesus fasted for forty days. I
can no longer walk up the steep mountain and
pay respect to the Greek monks who chose to
dedicate their lives to their Lord at their ancient
and lonely monastery at the summit.

I do know that Mr. Mandela, who is probably
the most respected man on Earth today, is your
friend and hero. He is also mine. I met him in
Chicago; and I had the honor of visiting him at
his home in South Africa, years back. You are
also a friend and a great admirer of Cape Town
Archbishop Tutu, a Nobel Peace Prize digni-
tary, a man who has stood against injustice and
racism almost his entire life. Both men describe
Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians, the natives
of the land, as worse than apartheid. Recently,
Israel prevented Bishop Tutu from coming
to Gaza to investigate and report Israel’s war
crimes to the United Nations.
I must tell you that Israel was the closest ally
to the White Supremacists of South Africa. In
fact, South Africa allowed Israel to test its nucle-
ar weapons in the ocean off South Africa. The
Israelis were given a blank check: they could test
whenever they desired and did not even have to
ask permission. Both worked on an ethnic bomb
that kills Blacks and Arabs.
Arabs have always supported the dismantling
of this racist government. In 1962, African-Arab
Sudan granted Mandela a passport to travel with
to gain international support in his struggle to
free his people. Libya, among other Arab states,
provided Mandela and other African liberation
movements, political as well as material support.
As a result, Libya was designated by the White
House as a terrorist rogue state. What a great
honor!

Obama’s Faith: A Civil and Social Gospel

O
ne by one, Senator Barack Obama is
passing the necessary tests for national
leadership. Probing questions have
been raised about his experience, race, early
education, parents, voting record, statesmanship,
and more. He has answered those questions with
poise and respect. But when attention turns to
Senator Obama’s faith, I get worried.
As Martin Marty noted in a recent column
(“Keeping the Faith at Trinity United Church
of Christ,” April 2, 2007), some media hounds
have focused on Obama’s home church of
choice. Trinity United Church of Christ on
Chicago’s south side is one of the nation’s most
progressive African American mega-churches.
Led for thirty-five years by the Rev. Dr. Jeremiah
A. Wright, Jr., the church fuses into its core
Christian identity a set of cultural strains that
are vibrant in contemporary Black life, including
liberation theology, Afrocentrism, and progres-
sive politics.
The church has appealed especially to baby
boomers who came of age during the cultural
revolution of the 1960s. Dr. Wright has managed
to bring together the disciples of Martin Luther
King, Jr. with the Black Nationalist disciples of
Malcolm X, and to put them all in the service of
promoting more equitable policies for the least
advantaged members of our society. Indeed, he is
often credited with making it possible for many

disaffected Black separatists to return to the
church and to seek change within the system.
Unfortunately, uninformed pundits (a deliber-
ate oxymoron) from Fox TV recently weighed in
on a congregation and a community about which
they know very little. Their purpose is to embar-
rass Obama by insinuating that he is a closeted
Black separatist or worse. But they fail to ap-
preciate something distinctive about American
religion and public life. The best of American po-
litical tradition permits — and perhaps requires
— candidates both to acknowledge their ethnic
and regional particularity, and to transcend that
particularity in loyalty to the general human
condition. John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther
King, Jr., Mario Cuomo, and Barbara Jordan all
illustrated this noble tradition.
In 2006, at a speech to Jim Wallis’s Sojourners
conference, Obama elaborated on his under-
standing of how faith should appear in the public
square. It was a rational, balanced, thoughtful ar-
ticulation of a socially responsible Christian faith,
something rarely heard or said by politicians in
our political culture. His words were especially
assuring to people who feel that President Bush
has abused religious language and personal faith
to justify a horrific war and tax cuts for America’s
wealthiest citizens.
Obama’s inner life appears to be driven by a civ-
il and social gospel that America desperately needs

at this hour. And that inner life has been nurtured
by a congregation that loves God and celebrates
the beauty and power of the Black experience in
America. Why is this a cause for alarm? At a time
when there is so much of what Martin Marty calls
“wishy-washy, waning religion,” it is exciting to
see a congregation committed to improving the
lives of people who have been the victims of bad
public policy and public neglect.
The fact that churches like Trinity remain in
the city and serve people on the margins of soci-
ety suggests that they may be closer to the mis-
sion of Jesus than some of our finest cathedrals
and suburban sanctuaries. And while I imagine
that Fourth Presbyterian Church in downtown
Chicago’s Gold Coast neighborhood would love
to have the Senator and his family as members,
the working poor and those who have yet to
enjoy the American dream need him more.
I, for one, hope that Obama continues to
undertake his ministry of inspiring hope among
people who feared they might never dream
again, while reconciling tensions within the Black
political culture. If he can do these things while
appealing to a large and diverse American public,
then he will have passed the ultimate test of lead-
ership: reminding us that we are better, wiser,
stronger, and safer when we transcend our fears
and work together rather than apart.

I am amazed that politicians continue to argue
with highly qualified scientists about climate
change and the looming environmental disaster
affecting the world. It seems to me that such a
serious threat to the future of creation should
bring our leaders to their knees and compel
them to set aside politics to save the world.
I am fully aware that politics is the lens
through which practically every decision is made
in the public arena, especially across national
boundaries and international realities. But in this
case, we cannot allow political power dynamics
to resolve the conflict around environmental
responsibilities. This is one of those times that
we should rely on the real experts to guide our
public policy — the scientists.
The collision between science and politics will
be even more evident as the European Union
and the Group of Eight (G-8) nations meet this
week in Germany. As we approach the ten-year
anniversary of the Kyoto Protocol that calls for
industrialized nations to reduce greenhouse
gases, the United States still refuses to endorse
the Kyoto approach. Instead, we offer an alter-
native plan for a series of meetings to talk more
about it. As the climate crisis continues, the con-
flict between politics and science is being won
by politicians while the world loses. Rather than

trust the experts, we would rather keep talking.

know the urgency needs of the next ten.
I will readily admit that I am not expert in
environmental science or climate change dy-
namics. However, I believe that is the case for
the majority of Americans, including President
Bush. So, when we do not have the expertise to
understand the complexities of such issues, we
must rely on those who have no political invest-
ment in telling the truth. It is not a matter of
whose side you’re on politically. It is a matter of
relying on the proven data. That is where we are

failing to live up to our responsibility as one of
the most powerful forces in the world. We really
must set a good example in our role as leader.
To prove that we take the climate change
crisis seriously, the United States must be pat
of the solution rather than being a continual
obstruction to essential progress. To prove
that we recognize the crisis, the United States
must engage with other global leaders in action
rather than suggesting more talking. A series of
discussions over the next few years cannot be an
excuse to do little or nothing now. We are at a
crossroad of creation’s survival that cannot wait
for political maneuvering. Leave science to the
scientists.
The United Church of Christ has more than 5,700
churches throughout the United States. Rooted in the
Christian tradition of congregational governance and
covenantal relationships, each UCC setting speaks only
for itself and not on behalf of every UCC congregation.
UCC members and churches are free to differ on impor-
tant social issues, even as the UCC remains principally
committed to unity in the midst of our diversity.

STEWARDSHIP PROCEDURE
The practice of stewardship began early in the history of the Jewish people
– even before they were a nation. Abraham was a wandering nomad
without a definite homeland or country. After some problems had been
settled, by means of what might be called guerilla warfare, Abraham was
blessed by Melchisedeck, a priest of the most high God. In thanksgiv-
ing, Abraham bestowed on the priest, one-tenth of all the treasure he had
taken in his war. This generous spirit of Abraham was greatly rewarded by
God. He became a great man, a friend of God, the founder of a great na-
tion. All of us, in return for God’s blessings and sharing with us, are asked
to return a portion – that His work might be promoted in our midst.
Thus, stewardship is a procedure that follows from faith in the living God.
Find your place in this procedure.
GOOD SAMARITANS
We must all become good Samaritans. When we see a need, we too, must
pitch right in to help. This is stewardship, giving our time, our talents and
our treasure where they are needed.
When you throw a stone into a pool, you see ever-widening circles ripple
the surface of the water. Your stewardship should follow the same pat-
tern…from your home, to your neighborhood, to your church.

cago Daily News. He often confessed publicly, “I get down on my knees
beside my drawing board every morning of my life. I would not dream
