The tournament came to the city in 1965 after a small delegation of Farmington businessmen traveled to the American Amateur Baseball Congress annual meeting in Chicago to bid on the series. The bid was successful, and, every year since then, the tournament has returned to Ricketts Park. Many events coincide with the series, including the Connie Mack World Series Parade at 10:30 a.m. on Aug. 1 on Main Street in Farmington, the opening ceremo- ny immediately after the 5:15 p.m. game on Aug. 1 at Ricketts Park and the Home Run Derby and Coaches Challenge at 2 p.m. on Aug. 3 at Ricketts. This years opening ceremonies will include the induction of five former play- ers into the Connie Mack World Series Hall of Fame: Ken Griffey Jr., Barry Larkin, Duane Ward, Tony Muser and Larry Harlow. The Farmington Museum at Gateway Park is also showing an exhibit, Knocking it out of the Park: Celebrating 50 years of Connie Mack, which will run alongside the series. The exhibit focuses on the tourna- ments history in Farmington and on the people who played key roles in its success. By Karl Schneider kschneider@daily-times.com Strike Zone Baseball won the host team honors for the 2014 Connie Mack World Series after advancing out of the City Tournament for its fifth straight C M W S appearance. S t r i k e Zone com- piled a 25-15 record dur- ing the sum- mer, playing more games and travel- ling to more tournaments than in pre- vious years, b u i l d i n g experience head coach Adam Morrissey believes will be beneficial to his team entering the series. That really helps you out as a player and gives you more confi- dence going into the series, he said. One potential hang-up for the Cardinals is the long layoff the team will have to deal with entering Fridays nightcap against the Midland Redskins. Morrissey and the Strike Zone coaching staff have had to balance keeping the Cardinals mo t i v a t e d w i t h o u t b u r n i n g them out. I t s t o u g h , Mo r r i s s e y said of the 19-day break since Strike Z o n e secured the host bid. After the city tourna- ment, you need to let them take a break for a while. You dont want to burn them out on baseball. But, he added, the players also have to be ready for Fridays game. You dont want to be too hard on them too early, Morrissey said. You want them to be at their best Friday night for that game. You dont want them to be at their best a week ago. Its a little tricky because three weeks is a long time for base- ball players. While the team works to keep its on-the-field skills sharp, Morrissey isnt concerned about his players mindset entering Friday. He said his players understand what it means to play in the CMWS and dont need extra motivation. I dont have to say anything. Everyone whos on the field knows, Morrissey said. The last thing you want is to be that guy drilling it in how important it is and all that. He said he also wants the team to enjoy these moments during the series. All of these kids are going to go off to college soon, Morrissey said. Their lives are going to be moving on, and its their last time with their buddies, you know. Just experience the whole week with your families, enjoy it and take it in. Go out and play and let it be. Theyre gonna be prepared. When Friday night hits, well be prepared to go. 5 2014 CONNIE MACK WORLD SERIES THE DAILY TIMES # Player name Pos 1 Ethan Spellbring RF 2 Casey Dunlap 2B/RHP 4 Barry Wick 1B/LHP 6 Rashaan Sorrelhorse RHP 8 Dalton Watson OF 9 Lawrence Mayberry 3B/RHP 10 Ben Wiley RHP 11 Zach Ahlgrim C 13 Kelton McCoy C 14 Chase Beal RHP 15 Austin Davis CF/RHP 17 Lance Lee SS/RHP 18 Victor Chavez RHP 21 Matthew Knickerbocker C 22 Connor Calvert 1B 24 Warren McKenney RHP 26 James Harrington RHP 31 Matt Martin SS 32 Isiah Mayberry C 33 Kody Russell OF 37 Bryce Washburn 2B 41 Justin Phillips RHP RECORD: 25-15 MANAGER: Adam Morrissey REGION: HOST INTERACTIVE Check out daily CMWS videos! www.daily-times.com
6 2014 CONNIE MACK WORLD SERIES THE DAILY TIMES By Joshua Perry jperry@daily-times.com The Detroit Metro Stars will bring some new life to the Connie Mack World Series. The Metro Stars will be making their first CMWS appearance after entering North Central Regional for only the sec- ond time this year. Detroit locked up the series bid with a 6-4 victory against the Longshots from Illinois in the regional final. This is a first for our organization, Metro Stars manager Shawn Maloney said. We know that this is the best tour- nament to be a part of. Detroit had to battle back from adver- sity to qualify for the CMWS after drop- ping its opening pool game in the state tournament. The Metro Stars recovered to advance through the bracket, and the team brings a 42-5 record with it to Farmington. Maloney said his team has found the right mix of players to be successful. Many of the players have been on the same team since they were young, and their success has brought in other good players from the area. We got the right players that have been together for a long time, Maloney said. They were good, and other kids wanted to play with them. We have speed and power. Were good in all aspects of the game. The Metro Stars have seven Division I players on the roster from Michigan State, Michigan and Central Michigan, including 6-foot-5-inch lefty Grant Ruess, who was a 31st round draft pick by the Detroit Tigers and will throw next year for the Wolverines. The North Central region hasnt won the series since 1988, but Maloney believes his group has the talent to make a deep run and be a threat for the cham- pionship. I feel like weve got the team. Our kids expect to win, he said. Weve got a shot. The Metro Stars will have to wait for their shot to start the series. They will play the final game of the opening round against Bill Hood at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. # Player name Pos 2 Frank Maloney INF 4 Joey Rydzewski SS 5 Zach McGuire IF/OF 6 Joey Wolf RHP 7 Dee Jawad RHP/OF 8 Travis Perkola LHP/OF 9 Alex Deyonker LHP 10 Anthony Diponio 2B/C 11 Brandon Hughes LHP/CF 12 Austin Harvey 3B/DH 13 Zach Schmidtke 1B/OF 19 Darnell Wilson Jr. RHP 21 Grant Reuss LHP/DH 22 Andrew Gonzalez RHP 26 Ty Kiafoulis 1B/DH 27 Thomas Daffern 3B/DH 34 Chad Roskelly C 35 Trevor Russo RHP RECORD: 42-5 MANAGER: Shawn Maloney REGION: NORTH CENTRAL DETROIT METRO STARS

Hoots manager Don Johns is bringing his team back to Farmington for the third time since 2009, but he said qualifying this year came as a surprise. Were really young. I honestly didnt think wed be there, said Johns, whose team has 13 of its 21 players graduating in the 2015 or 2016 class. Weve played great, and it will set the stage for the future. The California-based team will bring eight Division I commits, including catcher Tim Susnara, who was a 34th round draft pick by the San Francisco Giants and will play college ball at the University of Oregon. The Danville team will rely a lot on defense and hitting to help out an inexperienced pitch- ing staff that has lost players to offseason col- lege workouts. Were going to play good defense. Theyve been very solid, and thats why were moving on, Johns said. Pitching is going to be a chal- lenge. We lost pitchers to summer programs, which has been a problem more so out West than in other parts of the country, I think. The Hoots made it through the CMWS West Regional, dropping only one game to the 2012 CMWS champion and 2013 runner-up SoCal Renegades. The team struggled with the Renegades throughout the year, but a loss to their SoCal rivals in Utah was the turning point in the Hoots summer. We lost in the Gates World Series to the Renegades. Sometimes, that can destroy a young team or make you stronger, Johns said. Id say that loss made us stronger. The Renegades were knocked out of the West Regional after losses to the Las Vegas Mayhem and NorCal Baseball. The Hoots went on to defeat NorCal 6-4 in the final to clinch the bid. The Hoots will start their series with D-BAT Gallegos in the noon game on Saturday. Johns emphasized pitch- ing will be key if his team is to win the opener and try to make a run at the title. I think were going to have to get a lot out of our pitching. Were going to play defense. Our young pitchers will have to keep us in the game. When weve been down, weve been able to come back, Johns said. Every day is getting tougher, and we cant afford to not execute. REGION: WEST MANAGER: Don Johns INTERACTIVE Complete CMWS photo galleries are online! Visit: photos.daily-times.com By Joshua Perry jperry@daily-times.com D-BAT Gallegos made it through the South Plains Regional to give the organ- ization a second team in the Connie Mack World Series this year, joining D- BAT Leach. Roberto Gallegos brings a talented bunch of young players to the series. Fourteen members of his squad have committed to Division I universities including the University of Texas, Texas Tech, Arkansas, Rice, Texas Christian and Wichita State while only seven of his players have graduated high school. We play with a lot of energy and enthusiasm. They play loose, Gallegos said. They all know each other from playing in high school and are a tight- knit group. Gallegos team battled through pitching injuries throughout the sum- mer, losing five guys to Tommy John surgery. The injuries took their toll during the American qualifier in South Troy, N.Y., where the Dallas-based team reached the final against Frozen Ropes but fell short of the CMWS bid. D-BAT bounced back in the South Plains final, beating the Dallas Mustangs 3-0 to earn their CMWS spot. The victory allowed Gallegos to add a couple of Mustangs to his bullpen and bolster the pitching staff. We were able to get good arms, and were ready to go, he said. Gallegos is looking forward to bring- ing a team to Farmington after being an assistant on past D-BAT squads. He said its a good boost for the program to have a pair of teams in the CMWS for the second time in three years. Its a one-of-a-kind experience. To get one team there is special, but getting two is amazing, Gallegos said. D-BAT Gallegos will open its series with Danville at noon on Saturday. Gallegos said his team is prepared for the tournament after a tough sum- mer of games. I think well have to pitch and play defense. The timely hitting will come, he said. We have a knack of taking advantage of mistakes. Thats what good teams do. Weve been mentally tough. 8 2014 CONNIE MACK WORLD SERIES THE DAILY TIMES INTERACTIVE Check out daily CMWS videos! www.daily-times.com By Joshua Perry jperry@daily-times.com The Bayou boys are coming back to Farmington. Bill Hood Baseball is making its return to the Connie Mack World Series for first time since 2010. The team out of Mandeville, La., advanced through the South East Regional, knocking off 2013 CMWS cham- pion East Cobb Yankees for the bid. The last time Bill Hood was in the CMWS, the team qualified through the South Plains Regional. Assistant coach Cole Catalano was on the staff in 2010 and said he doesnt see much difference in the caliber of talent between the two regions. Its difficult to get to Farmington, regard- less of the path his team takes, he said. Youre going to get quality ball clubs no matter where you go, Catalano said. Bill Hood hasnt been able to field a team the past couple of seasons due to work obligations for Catalano and manag- er Chris Westcott. Catalano said he was determined to get the team back on the field and to qualify for the series. Bill Hood got hot at the right time dur- ing the regional, knocking off the Yankees and the Florida Legends on its way to the teams third CMWS appearance. We swung the bats better than we had all year, said Catalano, who played in Bill Hoods first series appearance in 2002. We play a fast brand of ball with a lot of blue collar guys. Bill Hood pulls its players from a 60- mile radius in Louisiana. The team has seven players committed to Southeastern Louisiana University, where Catalano also played college ball. We stay local, and these guys are all within an hour drive. Theyve played against each other in high school and know one another, Catalano said. All the kids buy into what were teaching. Were not going to wow you, but weve come together as a team, gelled well, and thats why well have a lot of success. Bill Hood will open the CMWS against tournament newcomer Detroit Metro Stars at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. Were ready to have fun from the games, to the parade, to the home run derby, Catalano said. 9 2014 CONNIE MACK WORLD SERIES THE DAILY TIMES By Joshua Perry jperry@daily-times.com The Frozen Ropes made their Connie Mack World Series debut in 2013 and have secured a return trip to the 2014 tournament. Danny Florences team returns three players off of its last squad and will be looking for a deeper run this time after making the final six a season ago. The Frozen Ropes won the American Qualifier in South Troy, N.Y., for the second year in a row to make their way back to Farmington. The team from McKinney, Texas, won all seven games in the qualifier but ran into trouble against D-BAT Gallegos in the tournament final. The Ropes entered the bottom of the seventh inning trailing their Dallas rivals 3-1 before a three-run rally, capped by a walkoff double by Jason Reitmeier, clinched the CMWS berth. During the tournament, Frozen Ropes also beat the host South Troy, who qualified out of the North Atlantic Regional, twice. Its really unreal. This is a new team except for three guys and only Bryar Barnes played, Florence said. Those returning players were inte- gral in reminding the rest of the play- ers why coming back to the CMWS was the objective. Its been the goal from the begin- ning, Florence said. You cant really explain Farmington. You just have to experience it. Florences squad will kick off the series, playing the Puerto Rico qualifi- er Carolina Vaqueros in the first game of the CMWS at 5:15 p.m. on Friday. Frozen Ropes went 2-2 in their four games a season ago, defeating South Troy and the Illinois Sparks. They lost to Midland 2-1, before being eliminat- ed by the host Strike Zone. By Joshua Perry jperry@daily-times.com No team has enjoyed success at the Connie Mack World Series like the Midland Redskins. The team out of Cincinnati is back for a 24th straight series and is looking for its 14th champi- onship. This year s Midland squad, like many in past years, is loaded with Division I recruits. Twenty are committed to or play- ing at the NCAAs top level. The Redskins return three players off of a 2013 team that had an earlier- than-normal exit, being eliminated before the final four. Midland manager Joe Hayden said this year, the Redskins are a stronger team, but he knows how difficult it is to advance no matter the talent his team has on the field. I think were bringing a better team out there, Hayden said. We have to play it one game at a time. The key with the fences and wind out there is to keep the ball on the ground, play good defense and take advantage of every situation. If you dont do that, you dont have a chance. The team had little trou- ble advancing out of the East Central Regional. The Redskins shut out the Kentucky Bluechiefs 5-0 in the final and had a no-hit- ter from 6-foot-2-inch right-hander Zach Shannon in the tournament. Hayden said if Midland can continue getting those types of performances on the mound, itll be a diffi- cult to team to knock out. Weve been a pretty good offensive team and a heck of a team on defense. If the pitching holds up, well have a good chance, Hayden said. Midland opens the series with the host Strike Zone, following the opening cere- monies on Friday in which two Redskins legends Ken Griffey Jr. and Barry Larkin will be inducted in the CMWS Hall of Fame. Its great for the boys to go out there and play at the very same park as Kenny Griffey and Barry Larkin, Hayden said. You cant have put two better people in the Hall of Fame. Hayden said even though he wont be making the trip to Farmington, he knows his team will be ready for the tournament and will enjoy the experi- ence. We love the place, the atmosphere and the won- derful things they do for the team and our boys, he said. 11 2014 CONNIE MACK WORLD SERIES THE DAILY TIMES Mons Spanish Grill 121 W. By Joshua Perry jperry@daily-times.com D-BAT has been a Connie World Series regular since 2006, and, for the second time, in three seasons, the organization will have a pair of squads in the tourna- ment. Pat Leachs D-BAT team will make its second straight appearance in the series. Leachs team was the first to qualify for the CMWS this year after winning the National Qualifier at Surprise, Ariz., in June. D-BAT Leach lost in pool play and then dropped its opening game in the qualify- ing bracket to the Trombley Nighthawks before responding with five consecutive victories, including two over the Nighthawks to win the tournament and earn a CMWS bid. The D-BAT team returns two players from last years CMWS roster: Grant Schneider and Jacob Patterson. Patterson was named the pitcher of the tournament at the National Qualifier this summer. Were not as flashy this year. Were going to play a hard-nosed, good-paced baseball game, Leach said. Leach thinks last years experience will have him more prepared for the series, but he knows it will come down to playing good baseball during that week. On that end, there is only so much the teams can do to prepare. We talk about it, and you just never know what youre going to get. I just hope we play good baseball, he said. Everybody there has earned the right to be there, and thats what makes it so spe- cial. The summer was geared toward quali- fying for the CMWS, so after earning a spot a month early, Leach is hopeful the rust hasnt set in with his squad. You totally have to adjust the sched- ule, Leach said. You want to play as competitive a schedule as possible. D-BAT Leach will also be joined in the tournament by D-BAT Gallegos. In 2012, the organization qualified its D-BAT Dow and D-BAT Carpenter teams. Leachs team will open its series with the North Atlantic Regional winner at 5:15 p.m. on Saturday. 12 2014 CONNIE MACK WORLD SERIES THE DAILY TIMES # Player name Pos 2 Troy Cahill INF/OF 3 Tim Millard INF 5 Nate VanDyke INF 6 Darien Simms LHP/OF 7 Grant Devore INF/OF 8 Blake Adams INF/C 9 Travis Stone INF/RHP 12 Brady Harlan OF 13 Joseph Heineman INF/RHP 14 Austin Gehle RHP 18 Drew Gooch LHP 20 Matt Bernstein C 22 Jensen Elliott RHP 23 Troy Chezem LHP 24 Grant Schneider RHP 31 Reagan Todd LHP 33 Nash Walters RHP 34 Blake Wiggins INF/C 42 Noah McGowan INF/OF 43 Collin Sharp RHP 55 Jacob Patterson LHP 56 Pat Day LHP RECORD: 30-8 MANAGER: Pat Leach REGION: NATIONAL D-BAT LEACH
13 2014 CONNIE MACK WORLD SERIES THE DAILY TIMES By Joshua Perry jperry@daily-times.com For the second time in three years, Carolina is back at the Connie Mack World Series to represent Puerto Rico. In 2012, Carolina head coach Marlon Colon brought the Carolina Gigantes to Farmington. The team lost both games, including a walkoff defeat against Midland. Colon used those losses as a learning experience for his revamped Vaqueros squad this season with the hopes of winning Puerto Ricos first CMWS title since 1994. This is a much better team in terms of pitching and defense, Colon said through his translator. We know from 2012 that we needed to focus on that because of the type of park Ricketts is. The Vaqueros earned the bid this sea- son after a 5-1 win against Escuela Deportes Carolina to cap off a soggy Puerto Rico regional that saw multiple rain delays. None of the players on this Carolina team made the trip in 2012, but starting catcher Angel Lopez said his team is look- ing forward to the trip and the experience of playing in the series. Were pretty excited, and it took a lot of work every day to make it, said Lopez, who goes to school in Philadelphia. We were motivated to play hard. Youre going to see a lot of hustle. We have good pitch- ers and play seven hard innings. Colons experience in 2012 will be a help to the young Puerto Rico squad as he prepares the team for the tournament. Last time, the kids were a little nerv- ous, Colon said. We just need to play baseball and have fun at it. Colons confidence has rubbed off on his team, and Lopez said this time, Carolina will be ready. He told us it will be hard, but if we did it here then we can do it there, Lopez said. Well do our best, and Im confident in our team. Carolina will face Frozen Ropes in the opening game of the CMWS at 5:15 p.m. on Friday. # Player name Pos 1 Juan Fuentes Carrillo 2B 3 Joshua ColonJamie RHP 5 Esdras Navarro Hernandez OF 6 Carlos Recci Cartagena OF 7 Angel Lopez Alvarez C 8 Luis Serrano Diaz RHP 11 Jose CarrasquilloMiranda 2B/SS/C 13 Christopher Pizarro Paris RHP 14 Kenny Burgos Quinones RHP 18 Jose Arce Jimenez 1B 19 Jaime Rivera Ayala LHP 24 Bryan Guzman Muniz INF/C 25 Arvin Ayala Davila RHP 32 Brandon Marrero Barreto 3B/C 36 Gamalier Gonzalez Cancel OF 42 Josue Cruz Delgado LHP 51 Jan Rosario Martinez RHP 51 Rodney Figureroa Correa OF RECORD: 16-9 MANAGER: Marlon Colon REGION: PUERTO RICO

The Dodgers have been the most consistent North Atlantic Region team since 2000, qualifying for the tournament seven times. But head coach Kevin Rogers said a lot of his players came into this summer ready to make a return trip to Farmington. I think the six returning kids kept pushing our team and telling the others just how hard it was to get there, Rogers said. South Troys six returning players are the most of any squad in the tournament. Theyll be looking for redemption this year after the Dodgers were eliminated quickly last year with losses in their first two games. Wed like to get down there and play well, Rogers said. We know the competition will be tough, but were hoping the ball bounces our way. Pitching has been South Troys strength this summer. The Dodgers threw four straight shutouts in the regional, winning two games 1-0 and a third 2-0. The only runs allowed by the Dodgers came during the first inning of the final against Ontario. South Troy gave up two runs in the top of the first, before two straight days of rain washed out the champi- onship. South Troy was declared the win- ner since it was the only undefeated team in the tournament and had beaten Ontario 1-0 a couple days earlier. Weve been in a lot of close games. At times, weve struggled with the bats, Rogers said. Its been a grind most of the summer. Were a hard-working crew. South Troy will play D-BAT Leach in its opener at 5:15 p.m. Saturday. Rogers hasnt seen this particular D-BAT team, but he knows the organization well and has seen its teams for years at the American Qualifier his team hosts. D-BAT is a great organization. We know what were up against. Every team is great, and were look- ing forward to it, he said. INTERACTIVE Complete CMWS photo galleries are online! Visit: photos.daily- times.com
