Networking
The last 30 days have affected the tone and mechanisms of job search. The upbeat, aggressive

New Feature:
“Hannibal’s Takes” Interim Work
In this time of uncertainty there are fewer open requisitions for full-time positions and an increase in
the proportion of opportunities for interim work. Companies know that there might be some changes
Job Fairs in their longer term planning, but they do have a need for some work to get done over a two, three or
six month period. Companies are less willing to expand full-time employment, wanting to control

came into that organization under the umbrella of a consultant. He is still there.

election of a new President, there will be advocacy on different views of the discussions on

associations and NGO's.
Blue Steps
Consulting
The most common transition is to consult to your industry using your business skills and knowledge.

People with those industry-specific knowledge bases are best suited to transition to a different type of
organization within the broader industry category. A manager of a commercial credit card business
went to an organization that provides analytics to the financial services industry. A web producer with
a background in video now provides video services to a financial exchange. A marketer in apparel is
going to a web marketing role in home furnishings.
People sometimes use these times to enhance their skills by furthering their training or education.
Business school applications go up.
Long-Term Trends
Some long-term trends continue to offer opportunities even in this market. The growing economies of
Asia, Latin America and the Middle East are producing opportunities either in their home countries or
state-side. Clients have had offers in the last few weeks in Hong Kong, Singapore, Sao Paulo and
Dubai. For those not looking to relocate, opportunities might develop as the European and Asian
entities that purchased or invested in elements of U.S. banks look to expand their presence in the
American market.
A former client said, “The growing economies are looking for diversity in their candidates and a good
client base where they can be responsible for a multitude of products to sell. More importantly, if one
tiers down, so to speak, you can use that library of experience and have various entry points to the
type of clients the bank would like to partner with. In my case, despite the fact that I have extensive
experience in FX, I was able to use my knowledge of the money market, my ex-client base, to create
the leads. With the financial markets condensing, the specialist has to become a generalist, a master
of all trades.”
London is growing as a financial center. Clients have landed there for diverse roles, including
developing a money-market desk for a bank and enhancing the digital offerings of a television
channel.
Media is continuing to see the migration of ad dollars to digital, as well as further exploration on how
to take advantage of mobile and interactive. A former client in media states that she is being
approached for senior level business development and sales roles at the director and vice-president
level. She notes that "...these types of negotiating and deal making skills are especially transferable."
The very tightness of the ad dollars now make search engine optimization an even more cost-
efficient means to reach the targeted consumer. Market research, web analytics and web production
continue to offer opportunities. Digital out-of-home, especially the video component, is a growing
sector in media. Multiple-player game are seeing growth.
The outsourcing that has been growing for quite some time increases the need for people state-side
to be skilled with vendor management. The evolving relationship between corporations, government
and non-profits is providing opportunities for people to play intermediary roles, such as jobs in
government relations, advocacy or with NGO’s. The rising cost of fuel is creating developments in
alternative energy.
Companies are reassessing how they do risk management, which is now key for many jobs. A
number of clients have been hired in the last few months by regulatory bodies including the FED and
the FDIC. A consulting firm is recruiting staff for teams for the FDIC.
Basic Job Search
All of these suggestions are based on the principals of good job search and career management that
apply to any point in the economic cycle:
1. What are your key skills, assets and deliverables?
How do you best express them on paper or when you meet people?
2. Who do you know and who can you get to know to give you insights into and contacts in
companies?
3. What skills/knowledge will make you more marketable going forward? How do you best acquire
those skills/that knowledge in a contained amount of time?
4. What are the needs of your industry going forward?
5. What companies are best positioned to do well in the next year to two years?
These suggestions were developed in conversations with clients and colleagues.
Written by Jay Colan - Senior Vice President, Consultant formulated from discussions with clients
and in meetings convened by LHH NYC DPS Susan Eaton. Jim Lowe, Rod Williams, Ed Oustatcher,
Jim Lowe, Reuben Cohen provided input as well as Jan Thompson, Joe Quinn and Steven Pine.

JMC Job Search Tips (Simple Things pt 86…)

Adversity…
Probably the best thing to be said about today’s employment market is that it’s challenging. And
that’s likely a significant understatement. One of my favorite old sayings is an African proverb that
simply states, “Smooth seas do not good sailors make”. The “seas” are going to get a bit rougher
over the coming weeks and months and we can all become better “sailors” as a result. My hope is
that we can all take this ancient adage to heart, band together and navigate the stormy waters with
intent to look back and reminisce about how this time made us all better not bitter…

Just Thinking…
Be of good cheer. Do not think of today's failures, but of the success that may come tomorrow. You
have set yourselves a difficult task, but you will succeed if you persevere; and you will find a joy in
overcoming obstacles. -- Helen Keller (1880-1968) American Writer
