Romance of the Three Kingdoms 68' li)e many of the games before it in
the
series' can be both frustrating and enCoyable to (lay% & say
frustrating
mainly because the Romance series has a tendency to thro+ so many things
at a (layer at once' +hether it be a huge amount of officer names'
menus'
or cities% & intend this guide to be used as a means of becoming better
ac*uainted +ith the game +ithout ha"ing to learn e"erything on the fly%
Anli)e the game immediately (receding it' Romance 68 allo+s the (layer
to
control a single officer throughout the Three Kingdoms (eriod of Chinese
History% There are many ne+ additions since this style of game(lay +as
last attem(ted by K?0& -Romance 5.' and many' although not all' of these
as(ects +ere done really +ell% &,d recommend the game to anyone +ho has
really any interest at all in an r(g#styled strategy game%
9inally' &,d li)e to say a +ord about this guide in general% Although
the
game is technically a strategy game' some of the information gi"en here
could be considered a s(oiler' so be +arned if you are reading this
before
e"en (ic)ing u( the game% & don,t (lan on including any item' (ortrait'
etc lists in this guide in the near future' as these ha"e already been
co"ered by other +riters on this site% Any other suggestions for

This guide is based on the American $!7 "ersion of Romance 68%

&&% !tarting the Game
There are different scenarios that are a"ailable to (lay% The th'
+hich is the usual De"erybody is ali"e at the same timeD fictional
scenario is unloc)ed by com(leting a game as an officer ser"ing the
force
that e"entually unites China%
Anli)e (re"ious games in the series' ho+e"er' there are a large amount
of
historical e"ents that ta)e (lace throughout the game to ma)e the
scenarios flo+ together% The scenarios are' in order:
6% 9ebruary 65E: DRe"olt A+a)ens Heroric AmbitionsD # The game o(ens
+ith
the /ello+ Turban rebellion brea)ing out and He Fin raising an army to
defeat them% Biu @ei,s force starts out as a rogue army in Fi' +hile
!un Fian' 1ong Ghuo' Biu /an' and Ha Teng all ha"e their o+n cities%
9rom
the stand(oint of troo( strength' ho+e"er' no one comes close to
matching
either the /ello+ Turbans or He Fin%
7% !e(tember 65: D1ar) Clouds o"er the Ca(italD # Here' 1ong Ghuo has
seiIed the ca(ital and ri"al lords ha"e s(rung u( throughout the rest of
China in o((osition% >hen (laying on historical' this scenario is "ery
e"ent hea"y' but there are many different forces to ser"e or command' so
there can still be a lot of "ariety% This is generally my fa"orite
to (lay' although & thin) it is at its best +ith e"ents turned off%
;% Harch 6E: DThunder Rolls from the Central $lainsD # Relati"ely
similar
to the (rior scenario' the biggest single difference is that 1ong Ghuo
has
been murdered (rior to this scenario and that Bu @u and !un Ce are rogue
armies% >ith e"ents enabled and barring your o+n interference' both
+ill
*uic)ly seiIe cities and establish their forces% @oth Cao Cao and /uan
!hao are *uite (o+erful' and Biu @ei is set to succeed Tao :uian%
Again'
li)e the scenario before it' this time (eriod sees a great deal of
(arity
bet+een the rulers%
E% Fune 788: DT+o $o+ers Collide at Guan 1uD # This scenario really is
the
turning (oint in the game from relati"ely many +ea) rulers to relati"ely
fe+ (o+erfuls ones% Cao Cao and /uan !hao both share a great deal of
(o+er and are (osed to stri)e at one another -to /uan !hao,s great
disad"antage' if you ha"e e"ents enabled.' and !un Ce has car"ed out a
little em(ire in /angIhou% Although Biu @ei has a cou(le cities under
his control' they are both +ea) and +on,t last long against Cao Cao,s
(o+erful army' es(ecially +ith e"ents enabled%
4% Hay 78<: DA 1ragon Rises as Chi @i @urnsD # $robably one of the best
scenarios if (laying to see animated e"ents' as se"eral occur *uite
early
in the scenario% Cao Cao has con*uered the entire north and has set his
eyes on FingIhou% Biu @ei mean+hile searches for an ad"isor that +ill
be able to lead his army against such a force' +hile !un :uan debates
+hether to o((ose Cao Cao,s army or submit to it%
=% Fuly 76<: DTremors of >ar !ha)e Han GhongD # This is really the first
DThree KingdomsD (ro(er scenario% Biu @ei' ha"ing defeated Cao Cao at
Chi
@i' has since con*uered Biu Ghang,s territory and set his sights on the
north' +hile both Cao Cao and !un :uan ha"e their eye set on northern
Fing' defended by Guan /u%
<% A(ril 77<: DA !truggle bet+een ?ld 0nemiesD # The no+ obligatory
Ghuge Biang "s !ima /i scenario% Ha"ing lost the Fing (ro"ince to >u'
!hu,s +arlord no+ turns to the north in an attem(t to ca(ture the
central
(lains% !un :uan' although he has gained territory' is relati"ely e*ual
in (o+er +ith +here he +as last scenario%
5% August 74;: DThe Bonely Begacy of the 1eadD # The final historical
scenario sees !hu on the brin) of disaster% Ghuge Biang,s successor'
Fiang >ei' ma)es his final attem(ts to (ush north to seiIe the central
(lains +hile !hu +hithers from +ithin due to Biu !han,s (oor rule% >ei'
although strong militarily' also suffers from internal strife and is not
long for the +orld%
% Fanuary 748: DHeroes Across TimeD # The only fictional scenario in
this
installment (laces e"ery officer from the entire (eriod into a single
game
+ith unlimited lifes(ans% The only +ay an officer +ill die is if he is
beheaded by another ruler% A fun scenario' but also one that sees many
rulers unable to manage such large armies +ith little resources% Cao
Cao
is also difficult to defeat%
There are se"eral +ays you can choose to select your character% The
most
straightfor+ard is to sim(ly select the scenario you +ish to (lay and
then
(ic) an officer from that scenario% Alternati"ely' you can ans+er a
series of *uestions and the game +ill suggest a character for you based
on your o+n (ersonality% 9inally' the game has se"eral im(ortant
officers
(re(ac)aged +ith scenarios from +hich you can select%
The final decisions to ma)e are +ith regard to the games o(tions%
Almost
all of these are self eJ(lanatory' so &,ll only mention the really
im(ortant ones:
1ifficulty -ad"anced or beginner. # ?n ad"anced' the A& controlled
em(ires
are more aggressi"e' build armies more *uic)ly' and generally slaughter
(refects you control% The manual mentions that (laying on ad"anced also
reduces re"enue in your cities' but this is harder to notice% &t also
hides the loyalty ratings of enemy officers' +hich & thin) is a "ery
cool o(tion%
Hode -historic or fictional. # Historical allo+s officers to beha"e as
they did in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms no"el' +hereas fictional
randomiIes A& control% $laying +ith Historical mode on but e"ents off
maintains historial relations bet+een rulers and officers' but disables
e"ents that +ould normally occur%
0"ents -on or off. # >ith this turned on' im(ortant e"ents from the

that could not be du(licated +ith game(lay +ill occur if s(ecific
conditions are met -for eJam(le' Tao :ian falling ill and lea"ing his
territory to Biu @ei.% This cannot be set to D?nD if the game mode is
in fictional% Bea"ing this enabled +ill result in Cao Cao dominating
many of the early scenarios -unless of course you interfere +ith the
e"ents yourself.%

all the officers in the game,s lifes(ans by a good amount% This can be
unloc)ed by com(leting scenario as an officer or ruler of the force
that unites China%

officer,s abilities% All of this information can be accessed any time
during the game by (ressing circle and (ic)ing Dself%D The information

"iceroys' and then into cities' ruled by (refects% The first

can ha"e any officer of class 7 or higher a((ointed to go"ern as
"iceroy% An indi"idual officer re(orts first to his (refect' +ho
re(orts to the "iceroy' +ho in turn re(orts to the ruler% ?f course'

The manual claims this also affects ho+ often you are inCured in
battle' but & ha"en,t noticed a "ery strong correlation there% &f
you can a"oid duels -+hich is actually (retty difficult.' this stat
is not as critical as you might eJ(ect%
c% &NT # Arguably the most im(ortant stat% The higher your &NT'
the more commands you get +hen debating' the less susce(tible your
character is to tactics in battle' and the more often your o+n
tactics succeed% &t also effects your action (oints in battle' as
+ell as ho+ +ell you can use the di(lomacy commands and im(ro"e
technology in your city%
d% $?B # $robably the least im(ortant stat% $olitical ability affects
ho+ +ell an officer de"elo(s the farmland or mar)et(lace%
e% CHR # Ho+ +ell an officer interacts +ith other officers% This
ability affects many of the non#battle tactics' as +ell as the
di(lomacy commands% &t also affects your ability to debate and
im(ro"es your chances of building a friendshi( +ith another

enemy unit,s turn and lo+ers their morale% The DstunD battle s)ill does
the same thing in a cam(aign%

RAT&NG: Although the com(uter lo"es to use the scare tactic in battle'
it
is not terribly effecti"e% &t uses many action (oints' so you are
essentially +asting half your turn for the chance to delay your
o((onents%
There are some instances +here it is useful' but not too many%

0990CT: &n battle' entice agitates an enemy unit so the commander
disobeys all orders and beelines for the commander that taunted him% &t
also ma)es his unit "ery "ulnerable to the confuse tactic% A taunted
commander +ill usually acce(t an offer to duel% This s)ill also allo+s
the lure tactic in cam(aigns' +hich does essentially the same thing' but
+or)s less often%

$ersonal thoughts aside' cam(aigns are huge battles that are fought
for an entire region' rather than a single city% A cam(aign comes about
+hen one force declares their intention to seiIe an entire area% At

(oint' e"ery other force either agrees to su((ort the declaring force or
to o((ose it% ?b"iously' forces +ith +hom the declaring force enCoys
good
relations are more li)ely to su((ort it%
The forces +ho side +ith the declaring force and the original army are
together called the D(ro(onentD -a (oor translation. forces' and
those o((osed are called the Do((osition%D
A cam(aign ends +hen either the (ro(onent forces con*uer the region'
retreat' loses its commander,s unit' or loses a city it orginally held
at
the start of the cam(aign -+hich ma)es no sense.% The only +ay the

There,s no (erfect solution% >hene"er & ta)e a city' & ma)e sure to maJ
out its defense first% A city +ith maJ defense and an army relati"ely
e*ual to that of the attac)ers +ill usually sustain at least one attac)
before you,d absolutely need to rescue it (ersonally%
&f & can,t be at the city myself to im(ro"e its defense' &,ll usually
set
the (refect,s orders to DAuto'D as this seems to force him to im(ro"e

city,s defense the most *uic)ly% & ha"e also eJ(erimented +ith setting
the city (olicy to domestics and only selecting defense' but this really
doesn,t +or) at all% ?nce the city,s defense is maJed' then &,ll s+itch

Also' ma)e sure that you ha"e (refects of relati"ely high ran)%

officers li)e /uan Xi can be better (refects than Guan /u if their ran)

to my ruler or "iceroy until they are to class ;' so that & can force
them
to do tas)s that re+ard a lot of deeds% Class 4 (refects are usually at
a disad"antage as they can only march +ith = units at a time%

A: 0"ery time your troo( enters a battle' the troo(s become a little
fatigued% At first' there is no effect' but as subse*uent battles come
and go' your men +ill become increasingly tired% The only solution to
this is to return to your base and gi"e your men a rest% &f their
