Quincy
Nestled on the banks
of the Mississippi River along the Great
River Road is Quincy, Ill., a town steeped
in history, hospitality, natural beauty and
known for the best architecture outside of
Chicago.
Summer and fall welcome riverfront
festivals, with pit masters competing at
Smoke on the River BBQ Fest, and the
Great River Grape Escape hosting 12 Illinois wineries, paired with local chefs tastings. The Quincy area boasts six of those
wineries some dating to 1857. They have
partnered to create the Mississippi Valley
Wine Trail.
To salute Quincys German roots,
Oktoberfest commandeers the streets of
the Dick Brothers Brewery in the Calftown
District.
Nearby Historic Washington Park,
home of the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas
Debate, is now surrounded by wine and
martini bars, micro-breweries and fresh
eateries. The area is also home central to
Midsummer Arts Faire and blues concerts.

New Harmony
Along the banks of the Wabash River,
New Harmony was once the home of two
social experiments. The first was an attempt in the early part of the 19th century
to establish an Utopian community by the
Harmonie Society, a group of Separatists
from the German Lutheran Church.
While an economic success, slightly
more than a decade later the group sold
the town to Robert Owen, a Welsh-born
industrialist and philosopher. Owens
ambition was to create a perfect society
through free education and the abolition
of social classes and personal wealth.
Now celebrating its bicentennial, New
Harmony has become known for its gardens, sculptures, art galleries, restored
historic buildings and public spaces.
The annual German Festival, KUNSTFEST, honors the towns founding fathers
on Sept. 20 and 21 with music, over 150
arts and crafts booths, German food, 19thcentury craft demonstrators and more.
