Lessons On Early Lutherans

Perry County settled in early 1800s
Head down I-55
for a history of early
Lutherans in Missouri.
Perry County, one
of the oldest communities in the state,
was settled by Lutheran immigrants in
the early 1800s. Located just west of the
Mississippi River about 80 miles from St.
Louis, the area includes Perryville, Frohna, Altenburg, Brazeau and Farrar.
In Frohna, the Saxon Lutheran Memorial, an outdoor history museum set in a
log cabin village, highlights the pioneering spirit of the early immigrants from
Germany who settled Perry County.
The historic working farm and home
was the home of Wilhelm and Christian

Bergt, two brothers who participated

in the 1839 immigration from Saxony,
Germany. Today the site is listed on the
National Registry of Historic Places and
consists of 15 buildings, seven of which
are historic log cabins dating from 1820
to 1840.
On Oct. 11, Saxon Lutheran Memorial hosts the annual Fall Festival with live
demonstrations from the 1800s, handmade crafts, German food, entertainment, apple-butter cooking and more.
While in Perry County visit Perryville,
the Heartlands best-kept secret. While
there, take a tour of the National Shrine
of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal.

New Harmony
Along the banks of the Wabash River,
New Harmony was once the home of two
social experiments. The first was an attempt in the early part of the 19th century
to establish an Utopian community by the
Harmonie Society, a group of Separatists
from the German Lutheran Church.
While an economic success, slightly
more than a decade later the group sold
the town to Robert Owen, a Welsh-born
industrialist and philosopher. Owens
ambition was to create a perfect society
through free education and the abolition
of social classes and personal wealth.
Now celebrating its bicentennial, New
Harmony has become known for its gardens, sculptures, art galleries, restored
historic buildings and public spaces.
The annual German Festival, KUNSTFEST, honors the towns founding fathers
on Sept. 20 and 21 with music, over 150
arts and crafts booths, German food, 19thcentury craft demonstrators and more.
