Bob,
First, thank you very much for all your eforts in keeping the
Hicksville High graduates connected no matter the distance.
I graduated in 1964 and then went to the University of
Colorado, which makes me a bufalo, too! Thereafter, I moved
further west to northern California where I attended and
graduated law school in San Francisco at the University of
California (Hastings
College of Law) in 1971.
I have lived in San Mateo
County (about 20 miles
south of San Francisco)
since 1968. I have been
married since 1969 and
my wife is a Registered
Nurse (retiring this
summer) and we have two
kids (both of whom have
Masters degrees) and two
grand children with
another on the way (due
date is November) and
both of our kids and
spouses live in the same city as us San Carlos.
I have been a criminal defense lawyer for 42 years and I work
a few hours a week these days as I have worked part time for
many years. It has been quite an interesting career with
everything from disturbing the peace cases to homicides to
handle.
I think I have been to Hicksville about 3 times in ffty years
and the last time was about 15 years ago. I am very much
looking forward to attending the reunion and I have just sent
John Maniec $200 for two tickets for my wife and myself.
I will attempt to email you a recent photograph of myself
which was taken be a newspaper photographer a couple of
months ago for a story regarding old people who play ice
hockey, which I still do. I even played at Hicksville High and
I bet you might not even be aware there was a team in the
60s!!!
Anyway, if you get the email. the enclosed photo of me will
be the identical picture. The name of our team is the Old
Warriors very age appropriate
Again, thanks for all your eforts and I will always look forward
to the Newsletter. Henry Lichtenstein was a friend of my
brother (Jed Schaiman 61 I think) and my recollection of
Henry was that he was quite bright and quite skinny!
Steve Schaiman 1964
Editors Note: Actually, your brother Jed was classmates with
Henry in the class of 1959.
Steve,
Received your note and photo. How do you still play hockey???
I see those pros get knocked around and think our "older" bones
couldn't handle similar contact. Your note and photo will be in
the September issue.
Regards
Bufalo Bob
BB-
I am very much looking forward
to the reunion next month and
appreciate the work you and
others have done to set the
reunion in motion.
As for playing hockey, I played on
our high school team at Roosevelt
Field (outdoor rink) in 1963-64.
I resumed playing about 30 years
ago here in NorthernCalifornia on
a team and a few of us have
remained together all these years
although we have younger
players as well. The age limit is
from 18 to whatever and I am towards the whatever age68
this month.
I play defense and can still get around pretty well, forward,
backward etc. We do not play with checking and full face
masks are worn (optional butI like my teeth so I wear one.)
although checking is forbidden, there often is some contact
and over the years I have had a medial collateral ligament
strain (arthrogram but no surgery), pulled groin, pulled
hamstring, broken wrist, among some rather ugly bruises
from getting hit with a puck which had found its way to an
unprotected part of my body.
Ihave been fortunate in that my knees, ankles, hips etc are all
in good shape and I am relatively healthy, so I continue to
play and enjoy myself. Most often, a beer or two after the
game in the locker room, and talking about how good we
once were, also is standard and lots of fun.
I sent the actual photo to John Maniec and I attempted to
send a JPG to you but I dont know if you got the actual photo
on photo paper or by email. If I can fgure out how to send it
by email to you I may just do so if you did not get it. I have
not embraced technology but I think I can manage this.
Thanks again for all your eforts!
Steve Schaiman

Thank you, Bob for all your hard work. I so enjoy the newsletter each month. And appreciate all the hard work
that goes into it! Thank you too for helping out our class of 1964 with spreading the news about our 50th class
reunion this September. One thing, though, I am not computer savvy, and don't know how to give you my
birthday info or the fact that my hubby, Marcel Reinhardt (aka Marty Reinhardt), passed February 11, 2012. He
was also class of 64. My e-mail is popsteam@msn.com, if needed.
Thanks again, Bob for all you and your team do for us all!!

You and the staf rock Bob! Two things I look forward to on the frst of the month is
fipping the calendar and reading the HixNews!
Steve Rose
I enjoy reading the newsletter, even if I didn't attend HHS. I lived in Hicksville from 47 to 66, went to
St Ignatius from 51 to 60, but went to high school in Uniondale. Many of my classmates did go to
HHS and I look for their names in every issue. Thank you Bufalo Bob and all who assist you.

Hi Bob,
I fnally downloaded the drivers for my new phone
into the computer. Then I began downloading the
movies & pictures to my external hard drive. I try to
be organized there with folders for each family
member, friends, cousins, miscellaneous, etc. Now I
am attaching a few pictures for you. The frst one is
of the summer school pins that I earned at the Fork
Lane Elementary School summer program. This was
maybe from the summer in 1952 or 1953, when I
was about 9 or 10 years
old. See if anyone
remembers these pins.
I'll take some photos of
my garden and send
them to you.
Take care

Hi Bufalo Bob,
Both my wife - Joan Lawlor Roehrig and I - Robert Roehrig,
are 1964 graduates of Hicksville
High School. We will both be
attending the Fifty Year
Reunion being held on
September 13. Here is a photo
of us on from a recent trip to
Spain.
Rob,
Where in Spain did you go? I was
in Rota to play basketball in a
U.S. Navy Tournament back in
1964. We travelled to Cadiz one day and witnessed a bull fght. Quite interesting that
the bull when killed is butchered and the meat goes to the poor. Then we few back to
Nicosia, Cyprus where I was stationed.
Thanks
Bob
We took a Globus tour with friends - it was very good. We were in Madrid, Toledo,
Granada, Gibraltor, Ronda, Seville, and Cordoba. Lots of beautiful scenery and
historic places.

Bob,
Thanks for sharing the Liberty Plumbing Supply
link, and the letter nominating Ted Swedalla to the
Alumni Hall of Fame, with me. Seems, youre the
quiet guy in the control booth who spotlights the
accomplishments of others. Ted & I are both lucky
to have had your friendship for these many years.I
remember the carpet rolls in the front room of
Liberty, then each leap as you guys built the
business. Time seems accordion like; feels like just
yesterday, and the other, end of time. Retirement is
generally pretty good, but I miss the contact with
you guys. Keep the emails coming, theyre great.

Hi
I am a lifelong Hicksville resident and, although I
graduated from Catholic High School, 3 of my 5
children are Hicksville High graduates (07, 11 and
12), with the other two set to graduate in 15 and
20. This is a terrifc newsletter, but I believe not too
many people, especially newer graduates, are
aware of it. Has anyone reached out to the school
to publicize?
Thanks
Kevin
Kevin
Thanks for joining up. We have not publicized at the
high school. Perhaps if you are still living in Hicksville,
you could stop by and make them aware of the
newsletter. None of the editors lives in Hicksville...we
are in Florida, California, Indiana, Georgia, and
Nevada.
Give them the website http://hixnews.com and our
email address editors@hixnews.com and any addi-
tional information pertinent to our newsletter. Please
confrm that your last name is Carroll.
What school did you graduate from? How about your
wife and what was her maiden name? Let us know.
Thanks
bufalo bob casale
Bob
Yes last name is Carroll. I graduated in 1982 from
Chaminade. My wife's maiden name is Kick - from
New Hyde Park and she attended Saint Mary's High
School. I moved to Hicksville as an infant in 1964;
lived here all but 5 years - bought my parents
house.
I am also on the Hicksville school board so I will
reach out and get the info where appropriate -
making some nice changes to district; looking to
enhance the history of HHS within the building;
reach out to and bring back alumni; enhance hall
of fame and put on district website etc. Hoping I
can reach out to alumni for assistance with gather-
ing facts, bios etc. I'll be in touch

You can ask as many questions as you want to in the
newsletter. Also, if you go to the Alumni Biosin the
header on the home page, click on it and you have
access to a ton of bio sketches.
Don't be afraid to ask me anything. I'll help in any
way I can. I also want to incorporate those in the high
school Hall of Fame into our Newsletter Hall of Fame.
I think I have the complete list.
I created a video Hicksville Then and Now...have you
seen that??? Also a tribute to Hicksville High alumni
who served in the military.

Reading a bio of Ed Delaney, I noticed that he retired from the NY State Police.
I too, am a retired NYS Trooper and would like to contact Ed. Can you help?
Respectfully
Les LeViness 1959
Hi Les,
It's good to hear from you!
I will gladly forward your email to Ed, and hopefully he will contact you. I hope all is
well with you and yours. Your friend from the Class of 1959,

Dear Ed Delaney,
Les Leviness, HHS Class of 1959, is also a retired NYS Trooper. He
would like to contact you. His email request is forwarded, below.
Best regards,

Thanks Henry
Its nice hearing from you, too, and knock on wood,my wife and I are doing well and we hope the same
for you and yours. Its been a while. Anyway, I didnt know Ed Delaney at all but did recognize his picture
in the bio section. He was a couple classes behind us. I just thought he and I could trade war stories.

I know you guys are trying to put a photo to the new subscribers...
I don't have an extra yearbook but attached is a photo of my '74

great, so people could connect the face to the name.

Gentlemen,
Sharon and I will be leaving on Thursday for Russia, where we're taking a river cruise from St.
Petersburg to Moscow on the Volga. We won't return until the evening of August 1st. If I see
Putin when we visit the Kremlin, I'll make sure to give him the Italian salute from each of us!
As a result, I will make the August 1 submission to HixNews by this Wednesday evening at the
latest. Thanks to some great work from Bob Casale, we've made some progress on the Uncon-
frmed List this past month and have added a few new names to the Confrmed List. At this
point, I can only indicate in the August 1 Update for the newsletter that we are still waiting on
the ofcial IRS letter before we can open our bank account for donations.
Bill, since the letter will be going directly to you from the IRS, should you receive it before
August 1st, you can amend my Update accordingly. Shouldyou be able to also announce
that our bank account is now open for business, by all means do that too. Please feel free to
collaborate with Ken Strafer or Bob Casale,if needed and amend the submission I send you
this week accordingly.
Bob, I'll try and get a picture of meand Sharon with Mr. Putin at the Kremlin for
you to use in a future issue ofHixNews. If that's not possible, I'll at least send you
one of us from somewhere over there.
While our river ship has WIFI, we've been warned that WIFI service will be
intermittent at best as we travel along the Volga River and in and out of some
of the lakes that extend from it. We're bringing a small iPad that we seldom
use, but I don't expect to be handling much email on the trip, so after this
Wednesday, 7/16, please try and hold any email you'd like to sendme.
Best regards,
Joe Carfora 1962
Hope you and Sharon have a great and uneventful trip. If you see Putin, give himthe bird from
me. After I fnished Communication Technician school in Pensacola, the navy sent me to
Bremerhaven. It was a great area for intercepting Russian submarine trafc that
was sent daily. I was copying almost 40 words a minute when I fnished my
morse code training. I would swear the Russian sailors were sending teletype
(high speed automatic transmission) and not morse code.
The old salts in Bremerhaven were there for years because they could copy
their code that was too fast for the majority of us. The problem is that many
of the old salts were ready to retire. It would be easy enough to record the transmission and slow it down but if
something needed immediate interpretation, recording would not work. I was in Bremerhaven for three
months, December of 1962 to February of 1963. Then was sent to Nicosia, Cyprus where we copied Iraq, Iran,
Jordan, Syria and Egypt but not Israel because they were our allies. LOL
Enjoy
Bob

Hi,
I'm writing on behalf of Sonya Fluckiger to let you know that her husband (my
grandfather), Fred Fluckiger, Hicksville High class of '38 passed on Monday,
July 7 of metastatic prostate cancer. If you could share this with your readers,
we would greatly appreciate it. Below are links to his obituary and an article
about him that was published in the Richmond Times Dispatch.
Rebecca Hunsaker
FRED FLUCKIGER,
Colonel (USA, Retired), devoted husband and
father, joined the heavenly hosts on July 7,
2014.
He is survived by his spouse of 72 years,
Sonya; his children, Karen Austin,
Irene McGovern (Kevin) and
Amy Fluckiger; and grandchildren, Taylor
Austin and Rebecca Hunsaker.

Fred was a graduate of
Hicksville High School,
Class of 1938.
During WWII, Fred served with the 165th
Engineer Combat Battalion. He was
awarded seven campaign battle medals,
the Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster,
Meritorious Service, and the Bronze Star
(combat) for his service. After the war, he
continued to serve in a military career
spanning 31 years, including assignments
to Guam, Iran, Korea, and Supreme
Headquarters Allied Powers Europe
(SHAPE) in Paris and Belgium. He
volunteered for his community, church,
and The Kiwanis Club of James River.
Fred also worked tirelessly with others to
establish A Grace Place Adult Care Center,
and served in various other services for the
needy and handicapped. A faithful
Lutheran, he was unfailing in his service to
God, and St. Luke and Epiphany Lutheran
Churches in Richmond. His dedication to
and pride in serving God and his country
were paramount in the way he lived his life. The family will receive friends Thursday from 1 to 2 p.m. at Epiphany Lutheran
Church, where a service will be held at 2 p.m. Reception to follow at the church. Inurnment will be a private ceremony for
family only. In lieu of fowers, donations may be made to Epiphany Lutheran Church.

Captain Fred Fluckiger Colonel Fred Fluckiger
Fred Fluckigers Obituary as it appeared in the
Glen Allen man was force behind A Grace Place agency
BY ELLEN ROBERTSON Richmond Times-Dispatch
Fred Fluckiger Jr. was instrumental in taking what is now called A Grace Place adult care center on
Staples Mill Road from a small agency that was serving 10 to 12 adults per day with physical and intellec-
tual impairments in the early 1990s to one that now serves 200 with various disabilities. Freds name was
the one we cut our teeth on as soon as we walked in the agency, noted Karen Webbman, CEO of A Grace
Place.
Fred was instrumental to the agency when it started moving from the founder level to a true
nonproft. He and a group of four (other directors) took us from doing nice programs to gelling into a
nonproft. He was the founder of the business side. We would not be the agency we are today if Fred had
not pushed us back at the beginning. He would push us to think bigger than we were and to realize that
so many folks needed our program to grow to meet service needs of people in our community. He helped
to defne the heart of this agency.
A Grace Place has grown to include services to people with age-related conditions, such as dementia,
Parkinsons disease and multiple sclerosis. Its purpose is to allow people to live in their homes and not be
institutionalized. The big piece is to prevent isolation, Webbman said.
Until he died at his Glen Allen home on July 7, Mr. Fluckiger was still a member of the agencys emeritus
board.
The 94-year-old will be honored at a funeral at 2 p.m. Thursday, today, at Epiphany Lutheran Church,
1400 Horsepen Road in Henrico County. Inurnment will be private. He often talked about giving back to
his community after retiring as a colonel at Fort Belvoir in 1971. He began to do so after moving to Vienna
in Northern Virginia, where he served as transportation director for the Prince William County school
system and as director of specialized transportation for the elderly and handicapped for the Northern
Virginia Association of Retarded Citizens.
He came to the Richmond area in the mid-1970s and served as CEO of SPECTRAN Specialized
Transportation for the elderly which operated under GRTC.
A former three-year president of the Kiwanis Club of James River Inc., he also served as lieutenant
governor of Division 24 of the groups Capitol District. He was a former vice president of the Adult Devel-
opment Center Inc. and a former president of the Mayors Commission for the Disabled, which honored
him as volunteer of the year in 1990.
In 1994, Adult Care Services honored him with the Louis Michaux Award for service to people with
disabilities.
A Brooklyn, N.Y., native, he was inducted into the Army in 1942 during World War II and married his
high school sweetheart, Sonya Teresko, about a month later. Mr. Fluckiger, who co-wrote a history of his
battalion, served with the 165th Engineer Combat Battalion, which landed on Utah Beach 30 days after
D-Day. His unit crossed the Rhine River, participated in the Battle of the Bulge and witnessed the remains
of the liberated Dachau concentration camp. He was interviewed three years ago for a World War II special
on the Public Broadcasting System.
His unit took part in the capture of the Berchtesgaden area in Bavaria, where Hitler and other high-
ranking Nazis had mountain homes.
He earned the Bronze Star for lassoing a partially buried bomb that he thought was an oddity,
perhaps a new bomb that he had not been taught about, and dragging it back to headquarters
so they could see what the Germans were doing, his wife said. Mr. Fluckiger became a
career ofcer and later completed a degree at George Washington University.
He was a member of Epiphany Lutheran Church and was a former president of Virginia
Lutheran Men in Mission. Besides his wife, survivors include three daughters, Karen
Austin of Richmond, Irene McGovern of Glen Allen and Amy Fluckiger of Wayne,
Pa.; and two grandchildren.

Bob,
I'm sorry that I can't help you with any of the missing information, but I am amazed that
61 of our class mates have already passed away. Thank you for all the work you keep
doing with keeping the rest of us informed. I look forward to reading the monthly
newsletter which has allowed me to get in touch with several old friends that time and
distance had spread us apart. Please continue the great work that you are doing. It is
greatly appreciated.

PATTI (BILANCIA) POSILLICO
Hi Bob,
I am sorry, I cannot help
you...don't know any of the
married names. I appreciate the
work you are trying to do. Every
time I look at the Memorial List, I
feel very sad...some of my
classmates passed so
young...and now we will pass
because we are old! Hope all is
going well in your world... we
are doing fne here in FL.
At present, we have our
daughter and family visiting here from NJ. It's 10 a.m.
and the kids are already in the pool. Beach day tomor-
row and then on Tuesday over to Universal Studios for
a few days for them.
Take care,
Barbara Di Bella Dowd 1962
Enjoy your company.
My two grand boys, Aidan and Chad Junior, are now in
Raleigh. They moved from Bethpage on Thursday and are
unpacking. I haven't seen them since September of 2011.
Maybe now that they're closer, I might see them more often.

bufalo bob
It's tough when the family is scattered across the
country! We have two girls; one family is in WI, and the
other is in NJ. Don't know where the grandchildren
will fnally settle, but by then, they will do the travelling
and we will do the staying at home!
How do you like GA? I have cousins there; one in
Atlanta, one in Blairsville and one in Blue Ridge. Have
been up that way quite often to visit my aunt, who has
now moved to Ocala.
Have a good day, and I really enjoyed watching your
new video! Love anything Hicksville!!!
xo,
Barbara

of help.Good luck.

Thanks for your response. You are
not useless. Not many people even

to help.

Thanks for your kind words, Bob. Tell me...do any of my
classmates take the time to say "thanks" to you for all
you do...or is it just a "me, me" world? Good luck on
your quest.

Hi Bob,
Pat Cochran Williams' birthday
was in February; I think it was
the 16th; 1945 and she passed
away July 2, 2001; she was 56
years old.We graduated in 1962.
She and I were good friends
since junior high and I spoke to
her just two days before she
passed away.She was fne at
the time we spoke; then a few
days later her husband, Rick,
called meto say she died in her sleep. It wasreally a
shock. Her daughter had just had a baby (Pat's frst
grandchild) and she was looking forward to enjoying
him. Hope this helps.

p.s. BobThanks for the
explanation about the presen-
tation. I dont think Lois was
married - she died relatively
young. (late 60's?). Marilyn
Zaretzky would know more.
Good luck. The presentation is
a very nice thought.
Lois Chameides' married name
was Lois Chameides Monahan. I
believe she graduated in the
Class of 1962. Thank you for all
the work you do.

David Salonche, Class of 1962, died of an allergic
reaction to a fu shot many years ago. You may want to
add him to the In Memoriam list.

Bob,
Someone mentioned at the last
reunion that Tom DeBrocke
passed away in Florida some
time ago. That's all I know and
don't even know if that is
correct. I appreciate all the
things you do for every class.
Steve Backman
Bob,
I didn't see Tom DeBrocke on
the list. At our class reunion in
2012 it was widely known that
he had passed. You might want
to check for dates with Rich
Thomas if you have his contact
info.

married to Edwin Woolf and they lived in Garland Texas. They have a son and daughter.

as you have listed on the master roster.

We sent a note to Alan Nave, Class of 1965 requesting information about Pat Nave

Joe,
Im trying to get some of the unconfrmed names for the
proposed Vietnam Memorial at the Junior High using the
HixNews master list to send out a plea for help. There are quite a
few on our master list with the same names as the unconfrmed.
As I get answers, I will forward to you. I'm sending emails and
hope that we get good results.

Jeanne Saeger Powell
Hi Bob
Yes, Ted Levinnes is my brother and he
graduated from HHSin 1956 (I think).
Anyway, he served 4 years in the Air
Force but was not deployed overseas.
He still resides in Hicksville on Blueberry
Lane. I would imagine that he is listed in
your local phone directory and will be
able to give you the exact date of his
enlistment and the other details of which
I might not be accurate in remembering.
I will forward your email to him.
Bob,
I'm not related to
Ralph Powell.

A note sent to Mary Jane Waters from the class of 1960
We are trying to verify military status for former Hicksville alumni. The reason is we are putting a memorial at the old school
that will house the names of all who served in the military during the Vietnam era. We have an unconfrmed list that has a
name,Joseph Watersattached and we are needing to know his branch of service, years served and a listing of the various
duty stations where he served. Are you, perhaps, related to Joe? If so, please provide the needed information.
Thanks

Bob,
Hope you are well.
Joe was born March 31, 1932 in New York City. Following high school his fascination for fying
prompted his enlistment in the United States Air Force. Two years later he was awarded an appoint-
ment to the United States Military Academy at West Point where he graduated in 1956. Joe was the
frst boy from Hicksville to graduate from the Point.
Joe completed basic training at Webb AFB and advanced tactical fghter training at Luke AFB.
Following a tour of F-100's at Cannon AFB, Joe attended the University of Michigan in 1962 and
earned a Masters degree in both Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering and Instrumentation
Engineering. His subsequent assignments included Patrick AFB, RAF Lakenheath, England;
aerospace Research Pilot School, Edwards AFB as a test pilot and joint Test Force Director for the F5E,
International Fighter Aircraft.
In 1963 Joe married Billie Fern Allison and on August 3, 1972 Joseph Jr. was born.
Joe's love of Aeronautics is most aptly represented in the development of the F5E, in which he
exerted such a strong infuence, August 18, 1972 he became the frst USAF pilot to fy the trim
International Fighter. On October 16, 1972 Joe's life was taken doing what he love to do---fying. Some of his accomplish-
ments and recognition are Aeronautical Rating of Command Pilot, Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with 9 Oak Leaf
Clusters; Meritorious service Medal for his work as Director of the New International Fighter F-5E Joint Test force.
His untimely death was an incalculable loss for all of us and to the United States Air Force.
