Description

Bicycles are not commonly thought of as a form of public transportation, however this
concept is being successfully challenged throughout the world with Public-Use Bicycles (PUBs).
The introduction of the smartcard to the PUB concept has created the “Smart Bike” and set the
bicycle on the path of becoming revolutionary to urban public transportation systems throughout
the world. This paper will explain the PUB concept, examine a PUB, and discuss the present and
planned applications of the Smart Bike.

I read that Paris launched their Vélib' bike-sharing program last month and are planning to have over 20,000 gray bikes available by the end of the year. Maybe you should suggest the idea to the mayor of Cardiff.

I don't know what they were called as I saw them only from the bus! But they looked a bit like your photo of the Amsterdam Smart Bike, but they were silver. I thought at first they were electric motorbikes and my friend corrected me that they were hire bikes. I thought they were a really good idea. I would use one if they had them here in Cardiff.

I like this idea. Saw some of these bikes when I was in Paris recently and thought how clever that would be. Never seen any in the UK except specialist bike hire e.g. mountain bikes in tourist resorts.

This sounds like a very viable possibilty for many urban centers. It is exciting to read how many cities have already had such great success with bike-sharing programs.
