Ironman loops through Verona

Nearly 3,000 athletes from around the world passed through Verona on

friends and family of the competitors watched from around the city, including Whalen Road and the annual Loop Festival on Main Street across from
the high school.

9/11 Never Forget exhibit

The 9/11 Never Forget traveling exhibit made its inaugural stop in
Wisconsin at Verona Public Library on Monday, Sept. 8. The exhibit
was created by the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation as
a tribute to all those who sacrificed on Sept. 11, 2001. The exhibit
also serves as a tool to educate youth about the historic events of
that day. Two New York firefighters who were eyewitnesses to the
events that day, John LaBarbera and John Carroll, gave live tours of
the exhibit. More than 800 people walked through the state-of-theart expandable semitrailer that featured video recordings and artifacts. Toppers Pizza also unexpectedly showed up to donate boxes
of pizza for those waiting in line.
Below, hundreds of people waited in line throughout the day to walk
through the exhibit, which was parked in front of the Verona Public
Library.

69 road work starts

Construction on Hwy. 69 began Monday, Sept. 8, in Belleville and will head north from there. Work
on the road, which has been one of the worst in the county, is expected to finish in mid-October. Until
then, the road will be limited to one lane with flaggers directing traffic during construction. Locally,
Range Trail and Davis Hills Drive will continue to be under construction until around Sept. 26, depending on weather, as crews pulverize, grade, pave and restore the road.

students, however, a distinction that is key for
budgetary purposes, as the
number of resident students
determines a districts revenue cap.
Because of space concerns,
the district had capped open
enrollment at 55 students
this spring, much lower than
the nearly 100 students who
are usually allowed to enter
from other districts. Not all
of those 55 spots are filled,

The district would not

regardless of the number of
resident or open enrollment
students, VASD business
manager Chris Murphy
said in an email Tuesday,
because of contingencies
built in through extra open
enrollment money and
interest.
Throughout the districts
budget process in the spring
and summer, officials
planned on an increase of
121 resident students, but

Friday in September, when

districts must submit counts
to the DPI. Gorrell cautioned that the impact on
the district cannot be determined until that count.
The two schools farthest

Gorrell told the board at
Monday nights meeting
that last year the district
was on the opposite side of
this, with 95 resident students more than projected.
This year, Glacier Edge
Elementary School has 25
more students than projected.
Im not sure theres any
way to predict that, and Im
not sure theres any way to
understand those massive
swings, he said.
The board initially had
set the tighter-than-usual
open enrollment cap for
the upcoming school year
at 30 as a result of a coming space crunch, then later
relaxed it somewhat up to

Church: Final design of County M to be done in 2015

Continued from page 1
into the former Wildcat Lanes
bowling alley on West Verona
Avenue. In order to do so, it had
to secure a special permit to put
an institutional use into a building in the downtown development district.
Redeemer did not need to sell
itself the way Sugar River did,
however, as the decision was
based on lease conditions and
basic compatibility with the
building and location. Alders had
several questions about the decision but wisely steered clear of
asking about the church itself or
its denomination, which might
have created a legal issue.
Redeemers mission, according
to its website, is to help God's
people exalt Christ, edify and
equip believers and evangelize
the world. Its vision statement
refers to New Covenant Theology and the churchs guidance
and governance by its elders, who
serve lifetime terms. Its three
founding members continue to be
elders.
The council discussed the food
pantry, the length of the lease, the
downtown plan and the use of the
proceeds.
Alders neednt have

worried about the food pantry;

the lease proposal was for the
9,600-square-foot main floor
only.
Ald. Dale Yurs (Dist. 2) wanted to make sure city staff were
comfortable that a two-year lease
wouldnt interfere with eventual
plans to redevelop the lot and link
Harriet Street across Main Street.
He was told that should not be an
issue.
Ald. Brad Stiner (D-3) wanted to make sure the payments
(minus upkeep) would go toward
paying off the debt on the library.
Staff noted that the council will
have the final say at budget time
but that has been the traditional
plan.

County M design
The council on Monday also
approved an agreement for the
final design of County Hwy. M,
which will complete the expansion of the overburdened arterial
from Cross Country to Mineral
Point roads.
Veronas share of the $1.1 million final design cost is $191,000.
It shares 25 percent of the street
construction with Madison, based
on frontage, plus some additional
utility and right-of-way costs.
The design was agreed upon

conceptually this year as a hybrid

setup a six-lane stoplight one
way, four lanes the other way and
a dedicated westbound underpass
along McKee Road. It is expected
to be completed in 2015, with
construction in 2016-17.
Construction on that phase, to
Prairie Hill Road, is projected
to cost $15.9 million, with federal funds covering half the road
work. Veronas share is expected
to be around $5 million (Veronas
frontage-based share plus undetermined right-of-way costs).

Other action
The council began the transfer of Nine Mound Road from
the Town of Verona, following
the towns approval the previous
week.
The process far more onerous than transfer from a county
requires a public hearing and a
joint meeting of the Town Board
and Common Council. That
meeting has been planned for
Oct. 15.
The council approved a permit for Hop Haus Brewing Co., a
micro-brewpub and taproom at
231 S. Main St. It is expected to
begin a lease this fall and open in
the spring.

The Town Board

approved a pair of conditional use permits (CUP)
last week to allow more
horses on two stables.
The Stable at White
Crossing and Liberty Stables, both on White Crossing Road, had faced issues
recently with the number
of horses on their properties and came to the board
expressing a need for new
permits.
The board approved
the new permits Tuesday, Sept. 2, after the Plan
Commission recommended
approval at its Aug. 28
meeting.
Liberty Stables owner
Mandy Thomas had gone
to the board years ago for a
CUP after complaints from
neighbor and town Sup.
Gregg Miller, and narrowly won approval then.
Miller had made continued complaints recently,
and Thomas had received
a warning from the county
on the number of horses on
her property, though she
was later found to be in
compliance.
She told the Plan

Commission in August she

did not want to be under
the microscope every
time there were a few extra
horses on the property during her business hours.
Previously, The Stable
at White Crossing did not
have a CUP, which meant
it was limited to one horse
per acre, while Liberty
had been limited to 1.8
horses per acre. The board
decided to stick with the
1.8-per-acre standard for
both properties, but added
a second condition that it
would also apply to owned
or leased land that is contiguous with the property.
In both cases, that made
a major difference for the
stables.
At White Crossing,
owned by the Krell family, there are four additional acres adjacent to the
property that are not zoned
for having horses. However, the Krell family owns
those acres, and including
those in the 1.8 calculation
allows them to board up to
25 horses overnight.
For Mandy Thomas, who
owns Liberty Stables, that
allows her up to 36 horses
because she leases land
from her neighbor.

Other conditions on the

properties include limits
on lighting and speakers,
parking prohibitions on
certain nearby roads and
a requirement to mitigate
the risk of erosion and dust
using appropriate ground
cover.
At the August Plan Commission meeting, commissioners debated whether to
keep the permits standardized or treat each property
individually, eventually
settling on a standardized
approach. Town administrator Amanda Arnold said
the full board agreed Sept.
2.
We try to make decisions that are based on
good sound judgment, and
hopefully those decisions
sort of carry forth and
act as a template to other
people, Sup. Mark Geller
said at the August meeting.
Rather than them coming
in here and us reinventing the wheel every time
theres a property for sale,
we sort of have a template
that we stick to.
The permits move on to
Dane County Zoning and
Land Regulation committee for the next step of
approval.

Nine Mound Road

The board also began the
process to transfer North
Nine Mound Road to the
City of Verona.
Arnold said there are
several steps left in the
transfer, including a public
hearing and a joint meeting of the Town Board and
Common Council, which
is expected to be Oct. 15,
based on comments at Mondays council meeting.
The road has become
a major entry-exit point
for Epic employees, and
the city plans extensive
upgrades over the next couple of years.
There are improvement
that need to be made to the
road, and the road really
is serving city traffic a lot
more, Arnold said, mentioning that the city initiated the transfer process.

Yes or No?
Sometimes the shortest and oldest words are the ones
requiring the most thought. We all know the meaning of
yes and no, but do we understand the power we can
wield by using them, and do we fathom the depth to which
they can penetrate our lives? Do you instinctively say yes to
life, or are you a naysayer who denounces everything? Yes
is the eternal affirmation, the cosmic optimism. No is the
eternal negation and cosmic pessimism. Lets face it: life is a
mixed bag. There is plenty of both good and bad, and good
and evil in the world. But the power of yes is stronger than
the power of no. Love will win out over hate. So, we should
be on the side of yes.
Christopher Simon
For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, whom we proclaimed
among you, Silvanus and Timothy and I, was not Yes and
No, but in him it is always Yes. For all the promises of God
find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we
utter our Amen to God for his glory.

Sheriff warns of imposter phone scam

The Dane County Sheriffs Office issued a warning Tuesday about a phone
scam circulating in the area
where callers are using
scare tactics and posing
as law enforcement.
According to a press
release from the Sheriffs
Office, in the past few
weeks, several people said
they received a phone call
or message in reference to
a variety of legal issues.
The scammer then directs
them to immediately call

VAHS Godspell takes

a steampunk turn
Press Correspondent

Jesus is coming to Verona next week to save the

people in the high schools
production of Godspell,
written by award-winning
writer Stephen Schwartz.
The show is an energetic
and modern retelling of the
story of Jesus, from the
time he first makes himself
known to his resurrection.
He teaches his disciples to
learn their lessons well, to
bless the Lord for all the
good gifts he has given
them and to stay by his side.
The upbeat songs, dances, and games keep the production happy and lively,
and later dissolves as the
Last Supper and crucification take place, and the
production takes on a more
somber and melancholy
feeling, even though the
disciples know it is all for
the best.
Unlike other religious
plays, such as Jesus Christ
Superstar, Godspell is
not somber. It uses comedy, improv, games and
current references to keep
an cheery and joyful vibe
throughout the play, as well
as to connect to the audience members.
The production features
Nathan Lucas as Jesus and
Alex Roller as Judas/John
the Baptist, supported by
an ensemble of VAHS students.
Inspired by American
Theater Magazine, director Steve Nibbe chose to
have steampunk costumes for the show which
were designed by Kendra
Johnson. He said steampunk is about grabbing hold
of meaning and rejecting
the modern for the old
exactly what is happening
in this show as Jesus tries
to keep old morals alive in
a new world.
The steampunk fashion
also helps portray that the
people who Jesus preached
to are on the fringe of society, creating a post-apocalyptic feel which Nibbe said
matches the set well.
The cast members began
rehearsal with a two-week
camp with Nibbe and assistant director Taylor Nibbe.
Day by day, the actors
spent hours learning the
songs and dances of the
production with the help of
vocal music director Judy

Georgeson and choreographer Sarah Bartlett, who

has previously worked with
13 VAHS musical productions.
During the camp, a student technical group led
by Danny Halminiak constructed the productions
scenery and props. The
musical will feature lighting from guest designer
John Dolphin, which will
be operated by the student
technical group.

Senior Ryan Nameth (center) battles Olin Hacker of Madison West and Madison La Follettes Finn Gessner a top the pack at Saturdays Verona Invitational. Nameth

Jeremy Jones

Verona senior Ryan Nameth

and Madison West rival Olin
Hacker of Madison West celebrated the 50th year anniversary
of the Wildcats cross country
program by shattering the course
record.
Hacker, who hasnt lost a race
since his sophomore year at the
WIAA Division 1 state meet,
took top honors in 15 minutes,
21 seconds, breaking the course
record by 24 seconds.
He continued his friendly rivalry with Nameth, who finished 12
seconds back in second place.

I wouldve like to seen it a

little bit closer, but well get him
yet, said Verona head coach
Randy Marks. We keep working at it. Well get him (Hacker)
yet.
The top two runners at last
years D1 state meet, Nameth
dropped nearly a minute off his
time from the previous week in
Watertown.
That just goes to show you,
when you run with (Hacker),
youre going to run quick,
Nameth said.
Junior Brady Traeder (17:23),
senior Nick Stigsell (17:25),
sophomore TJ Manning (17:55)
and senior Ben Giese (17:59)
formed a nice pack but didnt get
out fast enough to help Verona
push the pace.
Overall, the guys are working
hard, but got out too slow today,
Marks said. In a big meet like

this, thats tough to overcome.

Despite a slow start, all seven
varsity runners posted best times,
some lifetime bests.
You cant argue with those
kind of results, Marks said. Its
a good place to work from.
Madison La Follette held off
the Regents despite Hackers
performance placing its final
three runners ahead of West for
the 46-51 victory.
(La Follettes) Finn Gessner and Ryan were pushing me
a little bit on some of the hills,
Hacker said, Eventually, on the
second loop, I made a little bit of
a gap, and then I knew I had to
press my advantage.
Middleton rounded out the top
three with a 134, while the Wildcats came in sixth out of the 21
teams competing with a 172.

event was about more than just
the current program, celebrating
the programs 50th anniversary.
Marks, the head coach of all
but one of those seasons and who
was inducted into the Wisconsin
Cross Country Coaches Hall of
Fame in 1993, has seen a lot of
change since the Wildcats cross
country teams inception.
I dont want people to overglorify it, but its a nice landmark for the kids and the program, Marks said. Its nice to
give everyone a chance to see
each other again after all those
years.
Its just a time to reflect on
what they did and what theyre
doing now. Its supposed to be
a good time, so thats what we
hoped to accomplish with the
meet and our get-together.

Junior setter Victoria Brisack said the Verona Area

High School volleyball team
came prepared for Tuesdays
Big Eight Conference showdown with Middleton.
And it was apparent with the
blocking and defense, as well
as the offense in a 3-0 (25-19,
25-18, 25-22) sweep.
We are on our way to
achieving our goals, which is a
great thing, Brisack said. We
really wanted to win conference this year, and this was a
huge win.
Junior middle blocker Julie
Touchett led the way with 3
1/2 blocks, while junior middle
blocker Grace Mueller and Brisack assisted on a few others.
Senior libero Samantha Kolpek and senior defensive specialist Morgan Schmitz both
added 20 digs to throw the
Cardinal attack off balance.
That has been our huge
movement this year to focus on
besides our serves received
our blocks. Tonight, it really shined, head coach Kelly
Annen said. It is paying off
with the hard work they have
put in to improve those skills.
The Wildcat offense also
excelled in the sweep, as Verona never trailed by more than a
few points and led for most of
the match.
Senior outside hitter Jessica
Coyne finished with 12 kills,
while Brisack collected 37
assists.
Senior outside hitter Hannah
Miller, Brisack, Schmaltz and
Schmitz all added an ace.
We had a great couple of
tournaments, especially last
weekend when we won the
Richland Center Invitational,
Brisack said. The girls were
really fired up, and we just
came out with all we had.
Middleton was led by junior
outside hitter Logan Welti with
11 kills and 12 digs.

Girls race to ninth place at Verona invite

Jeremy Jones

Underclassmen McKenzie Imhoff

and Julia Pletta finished 23 second apart
to place the Verona girls cross country
team Saturday.
Imhoff, a first-year sophomore cross
country runner, covered her first 5k
course in 21 minutes to place the team.
Her finish was good for 22nd place.
Volleyball wasnt making me feel
great after playing last year, and I love
running, Imhoff said. The feeling after
the race today was just so rewarding.
It was so much fun running on our

home course today, Imhoff continued.

Everyone was cheering and in such
good spirits.
Pletta finished 23 seconds back in
33rd place.
Middletons top three runners all finished behind Madison West athletes,
but the Cardinals placed their final two
varsity runners ahead of the Regents to
take top team honors, 67-68. Fellow Big
Eight Conference rival Madison Memorial (89) took third place.
WIAA Division 2 state runner-up
Amy Davis of Madison Edgewood won
the invite in 18:24.
The Wildcats went on to place ninth
out of the 22 teams competing, with

seniors Erica Higgins (22:39) and Emily

Doyle (22:46) finishing 72nd and 76th
overall.
Sophomore Franny Donovan rounded
out the Wildcats pack in 23:13 good
for 91st place.
Junior Kayleigh Hannifan and sophomore Preston Ploc also competed, but
did not score.
One of things we will have to work
on with the new 5k distance is pushing
a little harder at the beginning and stay
strong throughout the entire race, head
coach Dave Nelson said. I think we
may have been a little spooked by that,
but we have a lot of growing to do and a
lot of season to do it.

Fourth-quarter mistakes, missed call hurts Cats

Senior quarterback Noah Roberts hands off to senior running

back Cameron Tindall in the first quarter last Friday in a Big Eight
Conference game against Janesville Craig. Roberts finished 8-for20 for 178 yards and three touchdowns, while Tindall carried the
ball eight times for 38 yards and caught a 55-yard touchdown pass
from Roberts.

many ways can we make a

mistake that is almost catastrophic? It is just mistakes
that seniors shouldnt be
making, head coach Dave
Richardson said. It comes
down to us. Why are they
making those mistakes? We
are not coaching them well

adno=370232-01

Craig senior running

back Austin Huber broke a
16-yard run on the first play
of the game-winning drive,
and Janesville made it to the
Verona 20-yard line before
Glowackis field goal.
When we get into the
fourth quarter, it is like, how

enough. We have to do a better job of coaching them.

They should have known
to bat the ball down on fourth
down. Those things have to
happen. Our coaching staff
has to know to call timeout
... when it was second-and-2
and we got a delay of game
We have to be able to do those
things as a group.
But those two plays werent
the only ones that helped the
Cougars pull off a comeback.
There was a little bit of controversy at the end of the first
quarter.
Verona forced Janesville
into a fourth-and-8 situation
on the Verona 44-yard line,
and it went into a punt formation. Six players ran off the
field, but only five ran back
in between the hash marks on
the field.
Senior running back Dan
Ouimet instead remained
on the sideline near head
coach Ben McCormick and
appeared to be out of bounds.
Craig then faked the punt and
Ouimet ran behind the referee
and down the field, making a
wide-open 19-yard catch.
The play was discussed
at the area WIAA District 5
meeting Monday, and the play

the Wildcats with a time of

Freshman Sophie Henshue led yet another sweep in
the 100 free with her meetbest time of 1:04.01.
Junior Julia VerVoort won
the 50 free (29.64) and led a
1-2 V/MH finish in the 100
backstroke (1:11.36), while
junior Beata Nelson added

the 200 free in 2:09.73 and

the 100 butterfly in 1:03.13.
Senior Sammy Seymour,
sophomore Maizie Seidl,
Drapp and Larsen added the
200 free relay in 1:55.88.
Wuerger was also pleased
with the individual performance of Seidl in the 200
IM. Typically a freestyler,
Seidl led a sweep of the top
three spots in 2:36.01.
Verona capped the meet
with the 400 relay team of
sophomore Sarah Schutlz,
Larsen, Seymour and Seidl,
touching out Craig by threetenths of a second.
The loudest, most exciting race of the night was

Verona/Mount Horeb didnt

With Olivia Prescott
behind by a body length

Senior offensive lineman Jackson Bollig (62) and junior offensive lineman Josh Hernandez (68) walk off the field as Janesville Craig celebrates its comeback last Friday. The host Wildcats lost 29-28 after Craig hit a field goal with nine seconds left.

The Verona Area High

School football team walked
off the field stunned after their
29-28 loss to Janesville Craig
last Friday.
The host Wildcats (0-3)
allowed a 37-yard gamewinning field goal by senior
kicker Joe Glowacki with nine
second remaining, but it was
the previous plays that sealed
Veronas fate.
With under four minutes
to play and Verona up 28-26,
the Cougars (3-0) committed a delay of game that put
them out of field goal position. Now, senior quarterback
Shayne Ellis had to try and
make a play toward the end
zone, but his pass was tipped
at the 3-yard line. That is
when senior defensive back
David Rogowski came in
for an acrobatic interception,
leaping and stretching for the
grab.
However, Verona now had
the ball on its own 3-yard line,
and it had to escape a potential
safety, work the clock and get
a first down.
Senior captain running back
Eric Schmid ran 9 yards on
the first play of the drive, and
the Wildcats looked poised to
get the first down it needed to
end the game.
But then, a delay of game
penalty pushed them back to
the 7-yard line, and Verona
was later forced to punt with
under two minutes to go.

was called illegal, according

to Rob Hernandez of the Wisconsin State Journal.
It was totally unethical and
illegal, and their coach knows
it, Richardson said. It was a
big play. It got them a score
and turned the field around.
And it just shouldnt have
happened.
I was surprised that their
coach had that in his playbook. I told him that, and
hopefully, he will take it out
because that wasnt good
sportsmanship.
Huber, who ran for 73 yards
on 21 carries, later punched
in a 2-yard touchdown run to
make it 14-0 Janesville.
Verona did come back by
outplaying the Cougars in the
final 10 minutes of the first
half.
After the defense forced
a 3-and-out, the Wildcats
marched 63 yards, capped by
a 23-yard touchdown pass
to senior split end Christian
Baltes from senior captain
quarterback Noah Roberts.
Roberts (8-for-20, 178
yards) and Baltes (3 catches
for 84 yards) connected again
later in the second with a
31-yard touchdown pass to tie
the game.
We have the tools. We
have what we need to be successful, Richardson said.
But we get into the fourth
quarter, and I dont know
what it is. We do stress
tests every week. Every

situation that we were in

tonight we did on the practice field, but obviously, we
havent done it enough.
The Wildcats kept the
momentum in the third quarter by forcing another 3-andout and getting a blocked
punt. Schmid, who ran for
81 yards on 18 carries, later
scored on a 4-yard run to put
Verona up 21-14.
Roberts picked up his third
touchdown of the game with
a 55-yard touchdown pass to
senior running back Cameron
Tindall with under two minutes left in the third to make it
28-20.
Ellis (2-for-14, 65 yards)
had previously connected
with senior wide receiver Josh
Ressler on a 49-yard touchdown pass, but the Cougars
missed the 2-point conversion.
Janesville cut Veronas lead
to 28-26 before the end of the
third on a 51-yard touchdown
run by Ouimet (10 carries
for 85 yards), but the Cougars once again failed on the
2-point conversion attempt.
Verona must now win five
of its final six games to make
the playoffs, but Richardson
said there is a lot of season left
to count out the Wildcats.
There is still a chance to
run the table, he said. There
is nobody we cant beat on
our schedule. We know that
looking at the three games
we played. The sun will come
up tomorrow, and we have to
play.

RECITALS
A. Nine Mound Road constitutes a
town line highway pursuant to Wis. Stat.
82.21 because it extends from the City
of Verona (the City) into the Town of
Verona (the Town).
B. Pursuant to Wis. Stat. 82.21,
the City and the Town, by the adoption
of separate resolutions, seek to initiate
the procedure to alter the location of
Nine Mound Road by the City, to reconstruct Nine Mound Road by the City, and
to transfer regulatory authority and responsibility over Nine Mound Road from
the Town to the City, as if the road were
wholly located in the City.
C. For public safety reasons, the
City proposes to reconstruct and alter
the location of Nine Mound Road from
Cross Country Road to County Highway
PD to a four-lane roadway.
D. Attached as an Exhibit to this

Resolution are a legal description of

Nine Mound Road, a legal description
identifying how Nine Mound Road is
proposed to be reconstructed and altered, and a scale map showing how
Nine Mound Road is proposed to be
reconstructed and altered, including
showing affected property.
E. On October 13, 2014, the City
anticipates holding a public hearing and
taking action on a resolution and highway order approving the alteration of the
location of Nine Mound Road by the City,
approving the reconstruction of Nine
Mound Road by the City in this location,
and approving the transfer of regulatory authority and responsibility over
Nine Mound Road from the Town to the
City, as if the road were wholly located
in the City. Notwithstanding the preceding sentence, the City and the Town may
hold a joint meeting in October 2014 to
take this action, which joint meeting will
be properly noticed under the Wisconsin Open Meetings Law.
F. It is the Citys understanding that
the Town is similarly following the Wis.
Stat. 82.21 process and adopting a resolution like this Resolution at the Town
Board meeting on September 2, 2014.
G. The City finds that it is in the
public interest for the City, working with
the Town, to initiate the procedure to
alter the location of Nine Mound Road,
to reconstruct Nine Mound Road, and
to transfer regulatory authority and re-
