Your recent letter to Minister Fassbender and to Jim Iker is much too little, much
too late. The BCSTA Back to School Action
Plan is simply a retread of the failed government approach to bargaining.
It should have been obvious when you
wrote your letter on September 5th that
the sides had reached impasse. Once two
sides reach impasse the reality of both
sides returning to the negotiating table in
any meaningful way is practically nil.
Throughout these negotiations members
of the Nicola Valley Teachers Union have
watched as the government pulled off
stall, after stall, after stall and more negotiations by the government would simply
be another stalling tactic. There is only one
meaningful way forward and that is
through the removal of the employers
proposed Article E80 and for the employer
to say yes to binding interest arbitration.
Contrary to the ministers pronouncement that the BCTF proposal for binding
arbitration is not serious I can assure you
that members working in School Dist.
#58 and throughout the province believe
this to be a very serious proposal backed
by their 99.4% vote to return to work if
the government agrees to binding interest arbitration.
Will trustees reopen our schools by
saying no to E80 and saying yes to binding interest arbitration? The public deserves your answer.

Tomorrow evening, theres an opportunity to review the City's proposed Zoning Bylaw, at City Hall, 3:30-6pm. The
zoning bylaw deals with use, size, height,
density and location of buildings on
properties within the City as well as parking and landscaping requirements. The
City of Merritt has a new Official Community Plan that provides the vision and
guidance for the zoning bylaw. updating
the zoning bylaw ensures that the regulatory tools are consistent with the OCP's
goals and objectives. The current zoning
bylaw was written 10 years ago.
