BURMA UPDATE
9 DECEMBER 2009
DAW AUNG SAN SU KYI MET WITH THE JUNTA’S LIAISON MINISTER AUNG KYI

Rangoon, December 9

Amidst severe criticism against detained opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi from
state-owned media for making her two letters to Senior General Than Shwe public
before reaching the latter, Minister for Relations Aung Kyi held 45 minutes talks
with Aung San Suu Kyi this afternoon at the Green Bank State Guest House in
Rangoon.

Though the contents of this 45 minutes talks are still not available, as of now Aung
San Suu Kyi and her party the National League for Democracy ( NLD ) have come
under fire from all three state-owned newspapers of this morning’s issue, which
accused the Noble Laureate and the NLD of making an attempt to force the
government into a corner “by dishonest use of the foreign media.”

In a major article carried by all three state-owned newspapers of this morning’s

issue, the state-owned media in particular attacked Aung San Suu Kyi and the NLD
for making her two letters to Senior General Than Shwe public before reaching the
latter.

In directly attacking Aung San Suu Kyi, the news article said: “The two letters
written by her reflect her dishonesty. She should have approached the government
in an honest way in order to work out the stalemate. In practice her two letters
are designed to tarnish the image of the ruling government, putting all the blame
on it.”

Continuing its attack of Aung San Suu Kyi, the news article said: “A thorough
review shows that it was she and her party that had called for international
sanctions against Burma. But only when the US announced to introduce the policy
of sanctions plus direct relations with Burma, would she offer to work together
with the government to lift sanctions.”

The news article then recalled that Aung San Suu Kyi has written her first letter to
Head of State offering to cooperate with the government on lifting the sanctions
against Burma.

“This letter was made public by the NLD on September 29, 2009, before it reached
to Senior General Than Shwe,” the article pointed out.

Similarly Aung San Suu Kyi wrote second letter dated November 11, 2009, to Senior
General Than Shwe offering to cooperate with the government in nation building
tasks.

“Both these two letters were sent to Senior General Than Shwe by post. However
so, the news about these two letters had received media coverage from Internet

down to foreign radio stations before the letters were received by the person
concerned,” said the news article.

While severely criticizing the NLD and Aung San Suu Kyi as making an attempt to
put pressure on the ruling government through the media, the news article said:
“If the NLD and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi really want to work together with the
government in the national interest, they can deliver letters directly to the Head
of State.”

News article also mentioned that whatever the case may be the government had
fulfilled her wishes of meeting three foreign envoys from the West Bloc ( The news
article is clearly referring to Aung San Suu Kyi’s meeting with three foreign
diplomats including British Ambassador on October 9 this year ).

In conclusion, the news article said: “Making dishonest use of the media might
delay the other’s response. If one looks at the event superficially, it can be said
that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s offer might be positive. However, making dishonest
use of the media could make the other side’s direction change. It could also make
it hard to respond positively.”
