Abstract

The essay will try to make people realize that there are a lot of

effects when we have sleep deprivation. Sleeping is needed to make

our body in rest after working during the day. Because we don’t have

enough time for sleep, we ignore it and finally our activity will be

disturbed. Lack of sleeping can influence our cognitive capabilities,

psychological conditions, and psychomotor skills. Everyone can be

attacked by sleep deprivation in a bustle and hustle schedule, so we

can manage our time especially to sleep and make it priority by put it

on your “to do list”.

The Consequences of Sleep Deprivation

In this modern era, a lot of people ignore their quality and

quantity of sleep. For them, sleeping is only an activity which must be

done to run away from their hustle and bustle schedule. They feel that

they do not have enough time for sleep, whereas sleeping is a basic

necessity of life which is important to do. Before Thomas Alva Edison’s

invention of light bulb, people slept an average of 10 hours a night,

but today, from The 2002 National Sleep Foundation, they sleep an

average of 6,9 hours on weeknights and 7,5 hours per night on

weekends. Although our society has changed, our brain and body

have not. Other research also said that in America sleep deprivation

and sleep disorder spend over $100 billion annually in lost

productivity, medical expenses, property and environmental damage.

Accordingly, sleep deprivation will affect our cognitive capabilities,

psychological conditions, and our psychomotor skills.

Sleep deprivation will decrease our cognitive capabilities. Lack

of sleeping will make us difficult to concentrate fast because by

sleeping the function of brain to concentrate will be better. For

example, teenagers can not absorb the lesson because they feel

sleepy and tired. Besides, the research certainly has shown that

sleeping too little can decrease our ability to remember important

thing and absorb information. Students, who cram for examination at

night, can be attacked by “forgetful syndrome”, because their brain

can not work properly and their memory can lose spontaneously. Not

enough sleep also makes people do not have creative abilities to use

their logical thinking in work. Consequently, it can reduce their

productivity.

It can also affect our psychological conditions. Sleep deprivation

will make us have demotivated. We become a pessimistic people

because our concentration in thinking has decreased, like teenagers

who are facing the final exam they do not have self motivation to pass

it because they feel sleepy and can not concentrate to do their

examination. Sleeping too little also make us do not have self-control.

One of the functions of sleep is to repair our physical condition after

solving a lot of emotional problems and intellectual activities. Hence,

not enough sleep can give us excessive worry, depression, and a long

period of stress.

Our psychomotor skills will be influenced by lack of sleeping. It

disturbs eye coordination, because it can cause the trouble of eye

movement. Moreover in the long period, it can cause nystagmus (rapid

involuntary rhythmic eye movement) which can disturb the function of

eye. When we drive a vehicle, it requires the coordination of horizontal

eye movements and steering. It is important because there is a lot of

traffic accident which was caused by sleepy driver. For our hand, sleep

deprivation also influence its coordination. Our hand not only can be

attacked by tremor but also can disturb an athlete in sport with hand.

Besides, sleep deprivation also influences foot coordination. For

instance, football players, they must have psychomotor vigilance in

their foot to increase their fast reaction to win football match.

However if they have sleep deprivation, the psychomotor vigilance of

their foot can not be controlled. Therefore in football club, there is a

regulation that prohibits their player to stay up all night, and then will

give them a punishment if they still do it. This regulation was

established because they believe that sleeping can influence the

performance of their football player.

Too little sleep can affect our intellectual capabilities, emotions,

and motor performances. To reduce our behavior in sleep deprivation,

we can manage our activity so that we have time to sleep. We need to

change the attitude that workaholics are more productive than the rest

of us. We must be aware that one-third of our life in this world is

spent for sleeping and taking rest, which indirectly, are very important

to the success of two-third others in our life. So, to have a good

quality and quantity of sleep, time management is the key.
