Li'l Bunny Bobbles 1

These socks can be knitted with either five double pointed needles, two circulars, or magic loop on one
circular. It is best suited to solid or semi-solid yarns. Mine are knitted with Rio de la Plata 100%
superwash wool. Directions are given for size small with changes for medium and large in parenthesis.
On the charts the additional stitches for the medium and large sizes are colored yellow and lavender.
Add one color to knit a size medium, add both colors to knit a size large.

Most of the sections (cuff, gusset, instep/foot, toe) have instructions for double pointed needles
followed by those for Magic Loop or two circulars. The heel doesn't have seperate instructions as the
flap and heel turn are knitted flat. Each of the charts follow their written instructions. The foot and
toe don't have charts. If you feel adventurous there is a chart for a carrot to be knit on the top of the
foot and toe. It is purled on a knit background, the opposite of the carrots on the cuff.

Materials
100 grams sock yarn, (approximately 400 to 425 yards)
US size 1 (2.25mm) knitting needles or size to knit to gauge (either a set of 5 double points or one or
two circular needles)
stitch markers

Sizes Small - 60 sts., 7.5” cuff

Medium - 66 sts., 8.25” cuff
Large - 72 sts., 9” cuff

Gauge 8 stitches per inch in stockinette stitch

Cuff
Double Points
• Cast on 60 (66 / 72) stitches with 20 (22 / 24) stitches on each of three needles.
• Join and knit one round, then do 1” of knit 1 tbl, purl 1 ribbing.
• Knit one round.
• Purl one round.
• Knit two rounds.
• Purl two rounds placing markers after the 10th (11th / 12th) stitch on each needle.
Magic Loop or Two Circular Needles
• Cast on 60 (66 / 72) stitches. Put 30 (33 / 36) stitches on each needle.

• Rearrange stitches so there are 31 (34 / 37) stitches on needle one, placing markers after the
11th (12th / 13th) stitches, and the 20th (22nd / 24th) stitches on needle one. And 29 (32 / 35)
stitches on needle two, placing markers after the 9th (10th / 11th) stitches, and the 20th (22nd /
24th) stitches.

Heel - The heel flap is worked flat (knitting back and forth.) If you wish, place the stitches for the
back of the sock (carrot/bunny/carrot) on a separate needle(s).

Heel Flap
Note: When you turn the flap to slip the first stitch the yarn will be on the side of work facing
you. Slip the stitch, then bring the yarn to the back for the next, knit, stitch. This will make a
very neat “chain” of stitches up the edge and make it quite easy to pick up the gusset stitches.

• Slip 1st stitch purlwise, k2, place marker, purl to three stitches before the end of the heel,
place marker, k3, turn
• Row 1 – Slip 1st stitch purlwise, k2, *sl 1 with yarn in back, k1*, repeat between *s to
marker, k3, turn
• Rows 2 & 4 – Slip 1st stitch purlwise, k2, purl to marker, k3, turn
• Row 3 – Slip 1st stitch purlwise, k2, *k1, sl 1 wyib*, repeat between *s to marker, k3, turn
• Repeat these 4 rows for a total of 32 rows or to desired heel length, ending with row 2 or 4.

Turning the heel

Note: When you turn the heel for sizes small and medium your next to last row will
end with p2tog instead of “p2tog, p1”, and your last row will end with ssk instead of “ssk, k1.”

Size Small (30 stitches)

• Row 1- sl 1, p15, p2tog, p1, turn
• Row 2 – sl 1, k3, ssk, k1, turn
• Row 3 – sl 1, p4, p2tog, p1 turn
• Row 4 – sl 1, k5, ssk, k1 turn
• Rows 5 through 12 - continue to work as for rows 3 and 4, increasing the number of stitches
purled or knit by one in each row, until there is 1 stitch left to pick up on the end of each
row. This will be at the end of row 12.
• Row 13 – sl 1, p14, p2tog, turn
• Row 14 – sl 1, k14, ssk, (16 stitches) do not turn

Size Medium (33 stitches)

• Row 1- sl 1, p16, p2tog, p1, turn
• Row 2 – sl 1, k2, ssk, k1, turn
• Row 3 – sl 1, p3, p2tog, p1 turn
• Row 4 – sl 1, k4, ssk, k1 turn
• Rows 5 through 14 - continue to work as for rows 3 and 4, increasing the number of
stitches, purled or knit, by one in each row, until there is 1 stitch left unworked at the end of
the row.
• Row 15 – sl 1, p15, p2tog, turn
• Row 16 – sl 1, k15, ssk, (17 stitches) do not turn

Size Large (36 stitches)

• Row 1- sl 1, p18, p2tog, p1, turn
• Row 2 – sl 1, k3, ssk, k1, turn
• Row 3 – sl 1, p4, p2tog, p1 turn
• Row 4 – sl 1, k5, ssk, k1 turn
• Rows 5 through 15 - continue to work as for rows 3 and 4, increasing the number of stitches
purled or knit by one in each row, until all the heel stitches have been used.
• Row 16 – sl 1, k17, ssk, k1(20 stitches) do not turn

Gusset (Begin knitting in the round) The front of the sock is now the beginning of the round.
Double Points
• Pick up and kbl 16 stitches along the heel flap and one in the gap between the heel flap and
the front of the sock, 17 stitches.
• Knit across the front of the sock on two needles with 15 sts each for size small, 16 & 17 for
medium, and 18 each for large. These are now needles 1 and 2.
• With a new needle, pick up one stitch between the front and the heel flap, and 16 sts along
the hell flap. Knit 8 (8/10) stitches from the heel turn. This is now needle 3.
• Knit the remainder of the heel stitches and the gusset stitches previously picked up. This is
now needle 4.

Round One
• With needle 1 and 2, knit.
• Knit needle 3, k1, ssk, knit across
• With needle 4 , knit to 3 stitches from the end of the needle, k2tog, k1
Round Two
• Knit all needles
• Repeat rounds one and two until there are 15 (16/18 ) stitches on needle 3 and 15 (17/18)
stitches on needle 4.

Magic Loop and Two Circular Needles

Note: The sole of the sock will have 50 (51/54) stitches, and the top will have 30 (33/36)
stitches. You may find it easier to knit this part of the sock on 2 circular needles, one for the
top, and a second for the sole, instead of Magic Loop.
• Pick up, and kbl, 16 stitches along the heel flap, and one in the gap between the heel flap
and the front of the sock, 17 stitches.
• Knit across the front of the sock, 30 (33/36) stitches.
• Pick up one stitch between the front and the heel flap, and pick up and kbl 16 sts along the
heel flap. Knit to 3 stitches from the end of the heel and gusset, k2tog, k1.
• Knit across the front
• K1, ssk, knit across the heel and gusset
• Knit the front

Round One
• On heel/gusset, knit to 3 stitches from the end of the needle, k2tog, k1.
• Knit the front.
Round Two
• On heel/gusset, k1, ssk, knit across.
• Knit the front.
• Repeat rounds one and two until there are 15 stitches on needles 1 and 4 for size small, 16 &
17 for size medium, and 18 on each for size large.

Instep / Foot
Knit until sock measures 2 inches shorter than the finished length of the sock.

Toe
Double Points
• Round 1, needles1 and 3, k1, ssk, knit to the end of the needle. Needles 2 and 4, knit to 3
stitches from the end of the needle, k2tog, k1.
• Round 2, knit.
• Repeat these two rounds until 4 (4 & 5 for medium) stitches remain on each needle. Graft
the toe closed with kitchener stitch.

Magic Loop and Two Circular Needles

• Round 1, front, k1, ssk, knit to 3 sts from end of needle, k2tog, k1. Repeat for back.
• Round 2, knit.
• Repeat until 8 (9/8) sts remain on each side and graft the toe closed with kitchener stitch.

Instep/Foot and Toe for the brave (;O)

Knit to 3 ½ inches less than the total length of the foot and then finish the sock with the
Instep/Toe chart. Graft the toe closed with kitchener stitch after completing the chart.
