Videotext Communications was commissioned by Channel 4 to carry out an archaeological evaluation as part of the Time Team television series in the grounds of Syndale Park, Ospringe Kent (centred on National Grid Reference TQ 599400 161000). The results of a watching brief during the construction of a gas pipeline in 1994 and evaluation trenches by Paul Wilkinson of the Kent Archaeological Field School suggested that the site contained the remains of a Roman Fort of Claudian date. As such it was likely to represent one of the earliest forts currently known from Britain. Confirmation of this would have considerable implications towards the debate concerning the location of the initial Roman invasion of Britain.
The archaeological evaluation comprised a geophysical survey and nine machine-dug trial trenches located across the site. The work was undertaken over three days in March 2003.
