Each vowel has at least two variants which differ from each other
typically with respect to degree of closure or height of the tongue.
[V] Voiced high open back unrounded vocoid. Occurs other than word-
initially immediately preceding glottal or velar consonants
(e.g. [ mqgi'bVkiq] m±ggA'b^kiq 'work').

a_ [a] Voiced low open central unrounded vocoid. Occurs in all posi-
tions of the phoneme (e.g. [ mVqtatin'tang] miqtatin'tanR

£ [a] Voiced high open back rounded vocoid. Occurs in unstressed syl-
lables immediately following a high vocoid (e.g. [ ba'hiw]
