BUILD THIS BACK-TRAIL SCcodieR HE BACK-TRAIL SCOOTER is powered by a McCulloch MC-1 Go-Kart engine. How- ever, the frame design is such that the scooter will accept most other engines of this type as well as four-cycle engines up to three hp (Briggs & Stratton, for instance). Readers will note a discrepancy between the photographs and the drawings as regards the size and location of the gas tank, The original tank came mounted on the engine and was of one quart capacity. This meant stopping every 15 miles or so to gas up. So this installation was re-worked to accom- It’s rugged enough for camping trips, pretty enough to show at Mrs. Snodgrass’s garden party—and can be built for about $200. modate on the luggage rack the seven-quart gas tank itemized in the Materials List. This tank provides fuel for about 120 miles of road travel. It connects to the carburetor with a %-inch ID, gas hose about two feet in length, The scooter can be used to negotiate steep hills using the gearing shown, or the gearing can be altered to deliver high speed on the open road; it is simply a matter of changing the outside sprocket on the jackshaft and substituting the proper length of chain. The hill-climbing gearing arrangement shown uses a 70-tooth rear-wheel drive sprocket with a No, 35 chain, The engine's standard chain-saw clutch has a 12-tooth sprocket. The 22-tooth sprocket which com- pletes the power transfer gives the scooter a speed of 22 mph but provides more power for hill climbing. For general runabout use the engine drives a 14-tooth sprocket on the jackshaft; a sec- ond 14-tooth sprocket drives the rear wheel. Geared thus, the scooter has a maximum speed of 35 mph at 4800 rpm engine speed. For rugged back-trail use the outside sprocket on the jackshaft is replaced with a 36-tooth sprocket that will take the scooter up a 45° slope and over the roughest trails. Current tests over hilly country with the high-speed sprocket arrangement have shown the scooter will deliver 75 mpg. On ordinary highway travel this would probably increase to around 100 mpg. One piece of equipment needed to buil this scooter (that is not common to every home workshop) is a welding outfit, as much of the assembly—and especially the frame— is welded. So far as the instructions for building this scooter are concerned, they are almost all encompassed in the detailed drawings ac- companying the article. Figure 2 shows the relative location and point-of-assembly of all the various parts, with each part identified by number. Figures | and 3 give the detailed dimensions and construction techniques of each of the various parts, each part identi- fied by the same key number which it carries in Figure 2. The sequence that should be followed in building the scooter is outlined in the text.
