YMCA reps in talks for frontage land on Hwy 70

YMCA representatives have
been reworking a land deal
of their own – one that will
provide the visibility and
access to area ball parks
they desire.
Via a letter to
Elam dated January 25,

park and recreation property
for the City. The offer details
that the City will buy
approximately 32 acres of
“buildable” land for $1.92
million and the owners will
donate the remaining 54
acres to the City, as well
as the remaining right of
way (an estimated 22 acres)
for the “connector road”
through their property and
required easements
utilities, sewer, water, gas
for

right of way.
In exchange, the
City will, according to the
deal, commit to reaffirm
the continued zoning of the
remainder of the owner’s
property as I-R; on the
owner’s request, rezone
designated portions of the
Wheeler Tract (eastern corner
of the owner’s 37 acre tract)
to Commercial/Retail and
rezone remaining I-G zoning
to I-R; support a commuter
rail stop to serve the area
at an agreeable location;
and proceed “without delay”
to fix a “mutually agreed
location” of the connector
road through the owner’s
remaining property and
“proceed promptly” with the
design and engineering of
the road.
According to a “park
proposal briefing” handed out
at the meeting, the proposed
tract is already accessible by
Curd Road and Clemmons
Road, which provide access
from the city center and
Highway 70 (Lebanon Road)
from the north, passing
the new high school. On
completion of the connector
road access will “increase
dramatically” thereby
serving the community from
East Division and Interstate
40 via the Beckwith Road
interchange, including the
Providence area.
But, argued Gray,
the new land offer is too
far off Mt. Juliet Road to be
“visible” enough by YMCA
standards.
“The Y needs the
same visibility as a store
front,” Gray pointed out. He
cited a market study of the
area conducted some two
and a half years ago which
found that local citizens
preferred a YMCA site on
Lebanon Road as opposed to
the old Mt. Juliet Elementary
School property, located at
the corner of Mt. Juliet Road
and West Division.
“The pent-up
demand for a full-service Y

average,” Gray said, adding
that studies showed a desire
for swimming lessons,
various children’s activities,
and a pool. “The location of
the Baltz farm did not test
favorably in our market
research. Visibility
critical.”
Which brings us to
the new deal.

table,” Gray said, to the
surprise of commissioners.
It included some 48 acres,
all but a dozen or so acres
located in a floodplain, and
bridges that would link the
YMCA facility to nearby ball
fields, near the Publix on
Lebanon Road.
Gray said that after

decided the land simply
would not work for them that
way and went back to Mrs.
Chandler to renegotiate.

Edd Bryant, of Old Hickory, passed away January 31, 2010 at the age of 71. He

HAGAR, John Thomas

John Thomas Hagar, age 96 of Mt. Juliet, TN, died Saturday, January 30, 2010. Mr.
Hagar was a lifetime member of Dodson Chapel United Methodist Church and was retired
from DuPont after 42 years of service. He was a fisherman and a gardener and participated
in the Senior Olympics for several years. His greatest joy was his family. Mr. Hagar was
the son of the late, James Henry and Eva Brent Hagar. He was also preceded in death by
his wife, Elva Hinson Hagar; brothers, Ira and James Hagar and sister, Corrine Hagar. He
is survived by: children – Betty Jean Burns, Christine H. (Harry) Northcutt and Jim (Mary
Jane) Hagar; eight grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be

WCHS first to open fitness
center in county schools

fitness center to provide
a place for students “to
maintain and improve their
fitness levels,” with other
county schools following suit
over time, school officials
said Thursday.
The new Fitness
Center at Wilson Central High
School opened on Monday,
January 25, said WCHS
volleyball coach Tammy
Serbin. The center, located
in a second-floor classroom
off the gym, is open 3:30
– 5 p.m. Monday through
Thursday and, Serbin said,

Littering is Very Costly to Everyone
After recently conducting a trash pickup along various streets in the city, I found myself
asking what would make a person disrespect their community, state or country by littering or
illegal dumping. Could it be laziness or lack of respect for community and fellow citizens? If not,
then I’d sure like to know why. Think about it, there are no good excuses for littering.
Why would anyone just throw trash on the ground? Is it because they think that all trash
is biodegradable or will simply be picked up by someone else? I just can’t fathom what would
posses a person to simply dump or throw trash on the ground or along the roadside. For the
people who dump trash on the ground or along the roadside on someone’s property, let me ask
you this, how would you feel if someone decided to dump their trash in your front yard or on your
property? Would you be ok with that? I very seriously doubt it. People who litter apparently have
very little respect for their fellow citizens and our great city, county and state.
Trust me, just drive down any road or through any community and see for yourself. I hate
sounding like a litter tyrant, but it frustrates me to see something that’s so easy to dispose of
simply thrown along the roadside. I agree that disposing of some items like stoves, couches and
tires isn’t very easy or convenient. It requires driving to the county landfill to dispose of and is
time consuming and annoying at times, but it’s the right thing to do. Taking the easy way out and
finding a convenient location to dump your trash and other conveyances isn’t right.
Illegal dumping cost us all. Those that illegally dump only pass their trash onto the rest
of us. They simply make the problem someone else’s. But in the end it cost us all. Littering and
illegal dumping is against the law and morally wrong. We must have respect for our country,
community and fellow citizens. Littering is defined as the disposing of any material in an illegal
manner. Let’s show some pride and put a stop to illegal littering and dumping. Let’s put trash
where it belongs.

Children’s TV and Film Workshop
February 6
The two day Children’s TV and Film Workshop will begin in Mt.
Juliet on Saturday, Feb. 6, from 2 to 5 p.m. with performers
from The Disney Channel, VH1, and Hannah Montana: The Movie
as instructors. Designed for ages four to 19, the Children’s
TV Workshop teaches children and teenagers the skills to
successfully audition and perform in major movies, tv shows,
and music videos. On the final day of the workshop, each
student will complete a professional on-camera audition for The
Disney Channel, showing all the acting skills they have learned.
Students will learn directly from industry professionals whose
credits include Disney’s Hannah Montana: The Movie, VH1,
and the E! Channel. The workshop is open for both beginners
and children or teens with local acting experience. To register
your child or teen for the Children’s TV and Film Workshop call
