When I realized the plastic bag I was storing my hooks in wasn’t really
working so well for me, I immediately decided to make myself a case. I browsed
patterns online, but couldn’t seem to find the pattern that was “just right.” Thus, The
Hook Book was made.

The Hook Book is a crocheted cozy made especially for crochet hooks. The
ribbed design works perfectly to hold your hooks securely in place and creates a
cushy texture that protects your hooks. The case also houses double pointed needles
exceptionally well, and there is even a crocheted swag in the case that is made to
store your crocheting and/or knitting stitch markers.
Skill Level:

easy/ early intermediate

Materials:

Size I (5.5 mm) and G (4.25 mm) crochet hooks

Approximately 145 yards of worsted weight yarn for the body of the case (I used
Vanna’s Choice in the color “wheat”). The yarn should have a bit of stretch to it, and
you need to feel comfortable blocking the yarn.

Scraps of yarn for the flowers and leaves (optional).

A small button (along with thread and a small needle for sewing the button on)

A blunt yarn needle

Abbreviations:
Ch = chain
Sc = single crochet
Hdc = half double crochet
Dc – double crochet

Instructions for the Case Body:

Using the I hook…

Ch. 51

R1: Sc in 2nd chain from hook and each chain across (50 sc).

R2– R26: Ch.1, sc in the back loop only of the next sc and of each sc across (50 sc).

R27: Ch. 1, sc in the front loop only of the next sc and of each sc across (50 sc).
[This row creates the “spine” for your Hook Book]

R28-53: Ch.1, sc in the back loop only of the next sc and of each sc across (50 sc).

Cut yarn, tie off, and weave in ends.

Assembling Your Book (see the chart on the last page):

This part of making the case can be a bit tricky, so just hang in there with me.

Lay the case out in front of you, with the ribbing going vertically. Now, fold up the
lower edge of the case approximately 4 inches. [you may need to pin the fold in this
position before you proceed to the next step]

Starting at the lower right corner, work 2 slip stitches into the corner; slip stitch
evenly around the two edges and the top of the case, working two slip stitches into
each corner (make sure that you stitch through both the layers when you’re working
at the fold – this is what secures your fold in place). Make sure that your slip stitches
aren’t too tight, or you’ll end up with a wavy, curly edge.

Cut a length of yarn off and thread it through your yarn needle. Tie a knot in the
lower end. Starting at either side, vertically sew “tubes” for your hooks to slide into.
Each “tube” should contain approximately two ribs (see illustration!).

After you’ve finished the above step, tie off and weave in all loose ends.

Stitch Marker Swag (optional):

Slip stitch with your leftover yarn to the top of one of the ridges that is to the left side
of your right hand “page.” Ch. 25. Slip stitch in the fifth chain from hook. Tie off,
weave in ends. Sew a button directly across from the slip stitch and button the swag
onto it.
Flowers and Leaves (optional):

Note: This decoration idea is just that. An idea! Please feel free to come up with your
won decorations. The possibilities are endless! Use funky buttons, embroider a scene
on it, etc… Let your imagination go wild!

Using the yarn of your choice for the flower, and your G hook…

Ch. 3. Slip stitch to form a ring. Work 10 sc into the ring.

R1: *Ch 3. Skip 1 stitch; slip stitch in the next stitch* repeat around. You should now
have 5 loops.

R2: Work *1 sc, 1 hdc, 2 dc, 1 hdc, 1sc* in each loop around. Tie off, leaving a long
tail for sewing.

Using the yarn of your choice for the leaves, and your G hook…

Ch. 6. Starting in the second chain from hook *sc, hdc, dc, hdc, sc* across. Tie off,
leaving a long tail for sewing.

Place and sew the leaves and flower according to the photograph. Or, have fun
arrange it your own way!

Block the case according to the fiber you’ve used. If you’ve used acrylic, I
recommend steam blocking.

If you’d like to have straps to secure you’re case, follow the directions for the stitch
marker swag, but chain fewer chains. Attach it to the case and sew on your buttons.

And you’re done! Put your hooks in the case and enjoy…
