Triptico Word Magnets

Triptico has a fabulous page of Word Magnets.
On this site you can type in your words and then arrange them in alphabetical order or
create sentences. You can also type in individual letters and use as a way to practice
spelling words.

You can change the size of the letters and words by clicking on the up and down arrows.
You can change the color by clicking on the color at the top of the page and then on the
word or letter. You can also add an additional word in the middle of the activity in the box
in the top right corner.
What a fun and free way to practice spelling, sentence writing, or alphabetizing!

KOL Jr. Online Stories

KOL Jr. Online Stories has a great selection of online stories that will work great on the
SmartBoard. One great things about this site is that it allows you to pause while watching.
Another is that it highlights each word as it is read aloud.

There are 5 categories of stories on the left side of the screen: Animals, Arthur, Fairy Tales,
Family, and Rhyming. Click on each one to see the stories offered in that category.

WatchKnow

WatchKnow was founded by Dr. Larry Sanger, co-founder of Wikipedia and launched in
October of 2009. It currently includes more than 11,000 videos across 2,000 categories on
subjects such as math, science and history.
Here's what the site lists as it's description:
"Think of it as YouTube meets Wikipedia, filtering out everything but quality educational
videos," says Dr. Sanger. "WatchKnow.org links together content from traditional sites, and
also allows users of the site to improve the organization of the video categories, which makes
finding the video you need much easier."

The site features videos from National Geographic,

YouTube and Google Videos among others, took more
than 18 months to develop and has been endorsed by
educators from schools including Harvard, Stanford,
Brigham Young and more. WatchKnow.org is designed
to complement and enhance the traditional learning
experience for students as they study concepts that are
traditionally hard to learn.
WatchKnow.org is funded by the Community
Foundation of Northwest Mississippi (CFNM), which
has set the goal of
offering more than 50,000 videos on the site by the end
of 2010. The site offers tips for video searching,
separate pages for students, parents and teachers, and a
guide for contributors.

You can set the age range for searching for videos and
you have the ability to search by topic word or by
subject area. What a great resource, for FREE!

Marblemania
Marblemania is a great website to use when exploring probability with your students.

In this interactive site, students can explore both randomness and probability. You can control
how many and what color marbles to place in the online marble bag. You are also able to
decide how many marbles to pull at a time and how many trials to run. You have the option to
run up to 500 trials at once. What a great way to run a large number of different trials in a
short amount of time. Once your trials are over, you immediately see both bar and pie charts
of the results.

Science Interactive NetLinks

James Holis from Teachers Love SMARTBoards recently posted about Science NetLinks . I
bookmarked it to check out later and am so very glad that I did!

Science NetLinks is part of Thinkfinity, a partnership between the Verizon Foundation and 11
premier educational organizations. There are a HUGE number of links to great
interactive science activities. The activities are divided by name, grade level, and benchmark
goal. The activities are divided into the following categories: K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12.

Here are just a few of my favorites:

SlushRush- This interactive from Kinetic City lets students see how computer models can
help them deal with uncertainty and make decisions about how to proceed with a project. In
this activity, students are presented with thirsty customers from all over the universe. The
students' job is to choose the number and kinds of drinks to make to satisfy their thirsty
customers.

Power Up!- This Science NetLinks resource challenges students to think about the positive
and negative consequences of various types of power. The site provides students with a
specific monetary budget, which they can use to purchase power plants for their city. As
students choose their types of power, they will learn how much power the plant provides, how
much it costs, and the effect it could have on the environment.

Zap- This is an interactive activity in which students test their reaction time. Students control
a hungry frog and their job is to catch a fly as soon as they see or hear it. There are three
rounds to this activity. The first round tests the student's visual reaction time. The second
round tests the student's audible reaction time, and the third round randomly tests both.
Within a round, students complete three trials. At the end of each round, students are shown
their trial times and average. The activity pauses to allow for recording or discussion.
Students can look for improvements in their reaction times, as well as compare their visual
and audible times. The "Learn More" feature provides students with information about what is
occurring in the body during each reaction.

MathMovesU
MathMovesU is a great math site for students grades 5 and up. There are three levels: grade 6
and below, grade 7, or grade 8 +. Each player chooses their own character and customizes it
before beginning their journey. Once created, your player walks through scenery. As they
walk they encounter math problems that appear in boxes above the character's head. Points are
earned by answering math questions correctly. There are games, facts, and quizzes that also
appear in their path. A super fun way to get kids interested in and engaged in mathematics!
