Students at Carson Elementary’s fourth grade gifted and
talented class had a chance to put their boat designs to the
test last week at the Fit-N-Wise pool. Three teams designed
boats, using only cardboard and duct tape, and then raced
them to see which ones would stand up. Above, Matthew
Hurst, left, and John Gleason found out their boat didn’t quite
stand up to the test, but it was fun nonetheless. The exercise
was designed to teach the students math and science.

Surviving the teen party season

ASSOCIATION
It’s the season of the year when pa-
rental gray hairs increase as parents
worry about their teen-aged children’s
party activities. From graduation cel-
ebrations to the beginning of the sum-
mer pool party season, as the school
year winds down the teen party scene
gets more lively.
While it’s natural for parents to
worry about their teenagers activities,
especially when off partying, setting
some simple rules and guidelines can
reduce both teen and parental stress.
One basic rule should be that you
are given the name, address, phone
number and parent names for any par-
ty your teen will be attending. If you
don’t know the family, call the parents
to make sure an adult will be present
and no drugs or alcohol will be avail-
able. Make your call an offer to help
and you can get your questions an-
swered through a casual conversation
without embarrassing your teen.
You also want to clarify driving ar-
rangements and restrictions. Riding
with someone who’s been drinking or
taking drugs is always forbidden. In
such cases your teen should know they
can call you at any time for a ride, or
that you’ll cover cab fare home, and
that there will be no repercussions or
blame.
You want your teenager to under-
stand that he or she is really only re-
sponsible for himself or herself. Let
your teen understand that there won’t
be punishment just because others at
a party get out of control and make
trouble.
Your teens should also agree to con-
tact you should a party’s location be
changed. Suggest excuses they can
use to call (“I forgot my key”) to help
them keep from being embarrassed by
checking in, but they need to let you
know when there’s a change.
If your teen wants to sleep over at
a friend’s, make it clear that you will

overwhelming. Fortunately, resources
are available that can help. Here’s
what you should know.
Support for caregivers
It’s easy to forget about your own
needs when you’re a caregiver. But do-
ing so can take a toll on your health.
Here are some caregiver support tips
and tools to help you stay healthy and
reduce your stress while you’re caring
for your mom.
■ Develop a care team: The first tip
is to develop a team of people that help
out when you can’t be there or need a
break. Start by asking family, friends
and neighbors. Even help on a small
scale can be beneficial.
■ Find local resources: Knowing
what kinds of resources are available
in your area and who to contact is a
priceless tool for caregivers. Depend-
ing on your mother’s needs, there are
lots of organizations and businesses
that provide services to help, including:
home health care, home and personal
care services, adult daycare, compan-
ion services, home-delivered meals, se-
nior transportation and more. To help
you locate what’s available in your
community, contact your Area Agency
on Aging. Call the Eldercare Locator at
(800) 677-1116 to get your local agency
phone number or visit www.eldercare.
gov.
■ Use respite care: This is a great
service that offers caregivers some
much needed time off. Respite care can
be for a few hours, a few days or for
several weeks and can be provided in
the home of the person being cared for,
in an adult day center, or at a residen-
tial setting such as an assisted living
facility or nursing home. To locate a
respite service in your area, visit the
National Respite Locator Service at
www.respitelocator.org or check with
your local aging agency.
■ Seek professional help: If you’re
not sure what to do for your mom, or
for those who are caring for an aging
parent or other family member who
lives in another city or state (see www.
cfad.org), consider hiring a geriatric
care manager (visit www.caremanager.
org to locate one in your area). This is a
professional who can assess your loved
one’s needs, and work with you to fa-
cilitate their care. The cost is around
$300 for the initial consultation and
$75 to $150 an hour thereafter.

I never cease to be amazed
at the many things in the
natural world that the ca-
sual observer might over-
look but for those that take
the time to be observant,
become every bit as awe in-
spiring as man made mar-
vels such as the Pyramids
or Hoover Dam. There was
a time when I measured
the success of every hunt-
ing trip by the quantity or
trophy status of game har-
vested; fishing trips weren’t
considered successful until
limits were landed. Through
the years, I have learned to
enjoy my time spent afield
or on the water, regardless
if the fish are biting or the
ducks or doves plentiful.
Take a late season spring
turkey hunt I enjoyed a
couple days ago with my
friend Mike Ford up in Jack
County. Many of you might
remember when Mike quar-
terbacked for SMU and later
Tampa Bay. Mike, like many
experienced sportsmen, has
learned to make the most of
his time spent outdoors. We
were hunting a lease known
as the Peach Orchard that
Mike has had access to for
more than 20 years. We ar-
rived during mid-afternoon
and I was given a quick tour
of the place and directions
to some of the better spots to
attempt to locate a late sea-
son gobbler. The ranch had a
live creek, a couple of small
ponds and plenty of cover
and open pasture; ideal con-
ditions to sustain a healthy
turkey population.

water in my hunting pack,

crossed near a muddy spot.
Closer inspection disclosed
the faint prints where a frog
had been sitting at water’s
edge. This area looked as
though someone had twist-
ed a garden hose in the soil;
the snake had obviously en-
joyed a lunch of frog legs at
this very spot. A bit farther
along, I noticed a brightly

It is already known that folic acid, a B vitamin, prevents major birth
defects involving newborns’ brains and spines. That is why every
woman of childbearing age is encouraged to get the U.S. recommended

Step back in time at Oak Grove this weekend
This year marks the 130th anniver-
sary of Oak Grove, from 1878 to 2008.
To mark this milestone, the Oak Grove
Methodist Church will celebrate May 17
and 18 with a number of activities. Most
activities are from 10:30 a.m.–4 p.m.
Sunday, May 18. The church is located
at 1295 Greenwood Road in Decatur.
Activities include:
■ An ice cream social, 2-4 p.m. Satur-
day, May 17 to welcome descendants of
the pioneer families of Oak Grove.
■ A visit to Oak Grove Cemetery, near
the original site of the church.
■ A special worship service in the
sanctuary.
DECATUR
■ The creation of a commemorative
song for the occasion.
■ An old fashioned dinner on the
grounds, with a chuck wagon and bar-
becue.
■ An afternoon of gospel singing in
the Tabernacle.
■ Vintage games in the park, includ-
ing a May Pole Dance, sack races, check-
ers, dominoes, horseshoes and other old-
time games.
■ A beard-growing opportunity for all
the men of the congregation.
■ A time for everyone, male and fe-
male, to dress in pioneer type costumes.
■ The burial of a time capsule on the

■ The building of a small replica of a
brush arbor.
■ The creation of a commemorative
quilt.
