planted are that people buy
bare-rooted or balled-and-

sate for the roots that were
lost. Any trees, even those
planted from containers,
can stall when they don’t
get enough fertilizer, or,

If you like the zoysia, it
would be fine. Bermudag-
rass is the best trade-out
for buffalograss since it is
equally drought-tolerant. It
also is the dominant grass of
the two. You could use herbi-
cides should your neighbor’s
St. Augustine invade bermu-
da. You cannot do that with
zoysia. Other than that, ei-
ther choice would be fine.
Dear Neil: I have 30-
year-old burford hollies that
I have trimmed at 5 feet
tall and 3 feet wide. They’re
in a shaded area. Some of

Work disagreements don’t have to be stressful

COUNSELING ASSOCIATION
No matter how terrific your boss,
there are going to be times when
you will have disagreements or
differences of opinion. This can be
an awkward situation, since you
know who’s in charge, but yet you
still feel stressed, and maybe up-
set about your reactions.
Since you know workplace dis-
agreements will happen, what
you want is a logical process that
will get you through such situa-
tions without feeling stressed, but
rather feeling good about how you
conducted yourself.
Start by evaluating how impor-
tant the disagreement really is. We
often respond emotionally when
there’s a disagreement, then find
we’ve made a mountain out of a
molehill. If the problem really does
matter, decide whether to deal with
it now or later. There’s no “right”
answer. Sometimes trying to deal
with a disagreement immediately
can make you seem argumenta-
tive, while at other times, waiting
to voice your objections may mean
you’re acting too late, or are set-
ting up bigger problems. When to
act is a decision to make based on
a careful evaluation of the problem
and its implications.
Your next step should be to con-
sider alternative courses of action.
There is almost always more than
one way to confront a problem.
What you want to do is actually
think through those alternatives
and try to evaluate which one
would actually be the best way to
proceed.
When you have what you feel
is the best alternative, then take
action. At this point, the action
you’re taking is not just a heated,
emotional response, but rather
based on careful and clear evalu-
ation of the problem and possible heated argument with your boss

Tick, tick, tick – if that’s
your clock ticking, no prob-
lem. But if you are count-
ing parasites on your pet,
you’ve got a big problem.
Ticks are little pests that
can lead to severe health is-
sues for you and your pet.
Here is what the experts
have to say about identifi-
cation, removal and preven-
tion of ticks.
There are hundreds of
species of ticks that look
completely different. Ticks
come in all shapes and siz-
es and even change their
appearance throughout the
different stages of their
lives. When unfed, ticks are

“Ticks are most common-
ly found on the back of the
head or neck where cats and
dogs cannot easily groom
themselves,” says Dr. Tracy
Cyr, an entomologist at the
College of Veterinary Medi-
cine & Biomedical Sciences
at Texas A&M University.
“Don’t only look there,
though. Ticks can be found
anywhere on the body.”
The easiest way to find
them is through simple
grooming. After the pet

There’s a difference be-
tween biting and stinging. I
have been known to mix the
two up just out of habit, such
as by saying, “I have been
bitten by a scorpion.” But
scorpions don’t bite; they
sting with the stinger at the
end of their tails. Wasps and
bees sting too, not bite; those
two related insects (both
in the order Hymenoptera)
use a modified ovipositor
that injects venom instead
of eggs for that nasty sting.
Ants (another family in the
order Hymenoptera) also
sting, but they are multi-tal-
ented and have good strong
mandibles to bite, too.
Ants are not the most
popular insects around be-
cause of their biting, sting-
ing swarms, but they are
definitely fascinating little
critters. Previously I just
admired the big “red ants”
(harvester ants) and was
dismayed by mounds of fire
ants. I noticed occasional
big carpenter ants or tiny
sugar ants but haven’t paid
any ants much attention.
They’re too small and quick
for me to photograph eas-
ily, and I don’t know much
about their identifications.
It’s so much easier to be in-
terested in something when
you can find out its name in
a field guide like for butter-
flies and birds.
I am going to have to look
closer now. I was given a fas-
cinating book called “Jour-
ney to the Ants: A Story of
Scientific Exploration” by
Bert Hölldobler and Ed-
ward O. Wilson. It describes
many of the neat adapta-

tions that different kinds of
ants have for different envi-
ronments and life histories.
My personal favorites were
weaver ants from Africa.
Worker ants folded leaves
together by making chains
with themselves, because
the leaves are too strong for
individual ants to bend. The
workers then used silk-ex-
truding larvae to “sew” the
leaves together. By repeat-
ing this process many times,
they create a nest.
You don’t have to travel
to Africa to find fascinating
ants. The harvester ants, or
“red ants” as we call them
at our house, are a great
example. “Journey to the
Ants” describes how har-
vester ants spread plants

around by transporting the
seeds and forgetting where
some of the stashes are. It’s
rather like a squirrel, Blue
Jay or crow forgetting the
hiding spot for an acorn. The
harvester ant mound in our
yard always has beautiful
wispy lavender-tinted grass
growing on it in the spring
and summer. I wonder if it’s
because the ants collected
seeds or if the grass just
finds the aerated mound to
be a good growing spot.
Ants don’t have great vi-
sion, but they live in a world
of pheromones, which are
chemical communication sig-
nals. They lay down trails of
pheromones for other work-
ers to follow to a food source.

Disability Services developed the Texer-
cise program to encourage older adults
along with their families and friends
to adopt a regular exercise routine and
healthy eating habits. But the Texer-
cise message – to get up and get active
– applies to Texans of all ages.
If you can’t imagine doing sit-ups,
why not try dancing? Everything from
gardening to a brisk walk around the
neighborhood, or even a morning spent
mopping the floor, counts toward your
fitness plan and can help improve your

Regular physical activity provides
tremendous health benefits for all ages.
It helps reduce the risk of stroke, diabe-
tes, high blood pressure and colon can-
cer. Exercise helps older Texans reduce
the risk of falls and bone fractures, and
it can relieve the pain of arthritis. Being
active helps children and teens main-
tain a healthy weight and build strong
bones. For busy adults, exercise has
proved to be an excellent way to fight
stress, improve your mood and relieve
depression.

Dear Wise County Voters,
As a third generation Wise County resident, my run for County
Commissioner offers the voters a candidate well experienced in
the matters of business (insurance, taxes, contracts, bids, employee
relations etc, etc). This has been gained having worked in our
family business, Top-Way Properties, in Wise County for the past
25 years. A large part of my work, outside of the office, was being
responsible for road construction and maintenance.
Over the years we have built countless gravel roads, several miles
of paved roads and other related projects including three bridges,
two private and one public. The road construction business is in
my blood.
The bottom line is that the Commissioner has to make the final de-
cision on road maintenance. It is a priority to see to it that taxpayer
money gets the best investment without waste.
One of my goals as Commissioner will be to pave a minimum of
10 miles of gravel road per year. It may be possible to do more,
weather permitting. That’s 10 miles done the right way. It takes
a little longer to do it right, but it will be a good road when com-
pleted.
Another goal is to establish a Forum with the residents. The Com-
missioner is responsible for many decisions in the Commissioner’s
Court that affect the people, and people need to have input in these
decisions.
