that was reinforced with cross bracing.
The front-drive car could also use a
frame with straighter side rails because
it was not necessary to have a frame

added strength to the Cord’s frame.

Cord in practice
So what was driving a Cord Front
Drive like, and did it live up to its prom-
ises?
It’s impossible to fault the styling of
a 1929 Cord, or any of the nearly iden-
tically styled Cords that were built into
1931. Europeans who normally snubbed
American cars frequently bestowed
“best in show” awards upon the Cord at
concours d’elegance events there. How-
ever, the car was not known for speed,
and some owners found the car to be
front-heavy when driving around town.
Regardless of its few shortcom-
ings, America’s ¿rst mass-produced,
front-wheel-drive car began a signi¿-
cant chapter in automotive history and
started a trend that remains strong to
this day.
The Cord's moving parts were under the hood, not the body (illustrated at top)
and its low height gave it a lower center of gravity and more stability (bottom).

utomobile engines of the early
to mid 1920s were not always
first-rate power plants. Follow-

sales were slow before demand
eventually picked up during the
Roaring Twenties, and cars often went
unchanged year after year as output
took precedence over innovation and
improvement.
More people were driving than
ever before and automakers were hard-
pressed just to keep up with demand. It
also took a long time to make a car be-
cause fast-drying paint had not yet been
invented. New cars would be parked for
months in lots until the finish dried. Au-
tomakers were more interested in solv-
ing such problems rather than designing
better engines.
There were exceptions such as with
the Auburn Automobile Co. of Auburn,
Ind. The relatively small automaker
made sure that its 1924 Auburn 6-43
model was powered by an outstanding
engine, the Red Seal six-cylinder engine
supplied by Continental. The Auburn

The engine was held in a three-point
suspension system with a flexible front
support that permitted slight oscillation
to relieve any strain on the engine when
the car was running over uneven ground.
Ahead of the engine was an over-capac-

copper core and tank. The radiator’s
pressed steel shell was detachable and a
flexible spring-mounting setup absorbed
vibrations.
Mounted behind the engine was the
transmission, which had its main shaft
mounted on large, annular ball bear-

of chrome-nickel steel and were oil
tempered. The countershaft gears were
also made of chrome-nickel steel. They
were of the spool type and rotated on a
stationary shaft. The emergency brake
worked on the transmission shaft.

car graduates from “used” to “old.”
It’s hard for many of us to digest, but cars from the 1990s
are now achieving collector status, and this year the Class of
1994 joins the club. For a lot of purists, ’94 will never be in the
same conversation as 1957 or 1970 when it comes to iconic
machines, but every year has its high points, and 1994 had its
share.
What follows is a list of 10 cars from 1994 that figure to
hold their place as “collector cars” into the future. We pur-
posely avoided including European cars and other foreign ex-
otic/supercars in this list — it goes without saying that almost
every Ferrari, Lamborghini and Bugatti of any vintage is go-
ing to have great appeal to enthusiasts and collectors. We’re

The late-model Impala SS cost $22,495 and turned out to
be a small-volume niche car in the GM scheme of things. For
the model’s first year, 6,303 units were built. Of course, instant
collector status was assured for the Impala SS. We may not see
anything like it again, at least from General Motors.
The 1994 Probe came out right in the middle of the model’s
10-year run, which lasted from 1988-’97. These things were
everywhere when they were at their peak, and they certainly
qualify as one of the best all-around pseudo-sports cars of the
past 25 years. Probably the best thing about them was they
were affordable — just $16,000 and change would get you
into a Probe GT in 1994, and for that you got a pretty hot little
number with great handling, 164 hp from its DOHC 24-valve
V-6 and lots of options to pick from. With or without the five-
speed manual, these cars were fun to drive.

is such a thing as a Duesenberg Valhalla, one can wager that
the original Torpedo Phaeton by Brunn is the swaggering king
of the royal hall.”
Unfortunately, much of that story is filled with creative li-
cense and the truth is much less fanciful according to Duesen-
berg historian and restorer Randy Ema. The young owner sim-
ply drove the car into a ditch, damaging the frame and the left
side of the body. The wreck was bought by Duesenberg’s Los
Angeles branch and parted out. That glowing exhaust port and
the supercharger blower went on the “Mudd coupe” (J-212),
and other parts such as the engine and frame may have been
reused, but the beautiful Torpedo Phaeton body was scrapped.
While the original Torpedo Phaeton suffered a ghastly
fate, its beauty was immediately realized and four more nearly
identical bodies of this style were built for Duesenberg chas-
sis (two each by coachbuilders Weymann and A.H. Walker). 3
The body has also been recreated for other Duesenberg chas-

the scrap heap and when Pansy Yount learned of this, she re-

and lost forever. Arden’s matching Duesenberg has also been

areas above the chauffeur and rear seat could be opened. The
