Members of the Oak Grove United
Methodist Church, left, gather around
a chuck wagon Sunday afternoon for
a barbecue lunch. Members celebrat-
ed the church’s 130th anniversary by
dressing in vintage 19th Century era
costumes and gathered for children’s
games and singing in the church
tabernacle. Below, Madilyn Moreland,

INCREASING AWARENESS OF
CERVICAL CANCER
Every sexually active woman should know that cancer of the cervix
is caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV), which is sexually
transmitted. Usually, the infection that HPV causes in the cervix is
not long-lasting. If the HPV does not go away, the virus may cause
cervix cells to change and become pre-cancerous. However, it is
important to note that pre-cancerous cells are not cancer and that most
cells with early pre-cancer changes return to normal on their own. In
any case, it is important for women to undergo a Pap smear test to
detect cell abnormalities. If cells are found to develop abnormally, a
process called“dysplasia,” the condition can be monitored and treated
if necessary.
Abnormal cells can be detected by a laboratory test on a small sample of
cells taken from the cervix. This is often called a cervical smear test and
is required every three to five years. For more information on cervical
screening call WISE OBSTETRICS & GYNECOLOGY P.A. at
940-626-8008. Our office is conveniently located at 1713 South FM
51, Ste. 201, Decatur. New patients are welcome.
Remember that it’s important to have an annual physical to prevent
disease and it’s important to seek early prenatal care.
HPV is a very common virus, and about half to three-fourths of the
people who have ever engaged in sexual intercourse will have HPV at
some time in their lives

FASHION SENSE — Students in Northwest High School teacher Cynthia Berend’s class show off their latest creations Monday in the hallway of the school. The students had to design
their own clothes with only one rule: they could not use fabric. Berend said the students created their unique fashions over the course of two class periods, and the winners were judged
Monday.
