Auto registrations increase in April

The last time more than
60 new cars were registered
in Wise County was in Sep-
tember of 2006. That date
stood until last month, when
62 new cars were registered
as Wise County motorists
apparently began to notice
the high price of fuel.
Of the 62 new cars regis-
tered, 31 were Chevrolets,
most of them Malibus, Co-
balts and Impalas, all of
which are said to get more
than 25 miles-per-gallon.
It was a very good month
overall for Decatur’s three
dealerships with 323 new

It isn’t news that our
nation’s economy currently
has many problems, prob-
lems that are resulting in
rising unemployment rates
in most parts of the nation.
Losing a job is a trau-
matic experience, one that
can affect each of us in dif-
ferent ways and to different
degrees. Being laid off from
a company where you’ve
been a long-time employee
and viewed your role as vi-
tal certainly increases your
sense of loss. Other factors,
such as your age, education,
skills, the local job market
and your family’s need for
that paycheck, can also in-
crease stress levels.
Increased and prolonged
stress can easily put your
physical and mental well-
being at risk. That’s why
it’s important to do all you
can to cope with job loss if it
does occur.
In may ways, losing a job
is similar to the sense of
loss one experiences when
a loved one dies or an im-
portant relationship ends.
There’s often a shock and
then denial that this is hap-
pening to you.
What follows is often an-
ger, anger that can be dam-
aging if it leaves you bitter
and easily irritated, affect-
ing your relationships with
friends and family. Or you
may try, unrealistically, to
get back that job that no
longer exists, and you can
easily experience depression
and sadness as you question
your worth and abilities.
Accepting that such emo-
tional reactions are likely,
and often necessary in or-
der for you to move on, can
enable you to get through
them more quickly and less
painfully. When you couple
that acceptance with an ef-
fort to continue living a nor-
mal life, it makes moving on
much easier.
After a job loss, you should
avoid major life changes that
will increase stress levels.

4-H is the youth develop-
ment program of the Texas
AgriLife Extension Service.
It focuses on the needs, con-
cerns and interests of young
people. Its aim is to help
youth gain a positive self-
concept, rational social be-
havior, knowledge and prob-
lem-solving capabilities.
Through planned individual
projects, meetings, group ac-
tivities and participation in
different events, members
develop new skills, learn
cooperation, develop leader-
ship abilities, improve their
citizenship and have fun.
4-H is not only about ani-
mal projects and partici-
pating at the Wise County
Youth Fair. It also offers
young people a variety of
other projects. Examples of
4-H projects include the fol-
lowing:
Food and Nutrition — This
project helps youth learn
the relationship between
science, foods and nutrition,
and food preparation, as
well as food buying, manag-
ing time, use of energy, and
food storage and safety.
Clothing and Textiles —
This project allows 4-H’ers
to learn how to construct
a garment, make a wise
purchase as a consumer in
clothing, or design apparel,
fabric or accessories.
Photography — This proj-
ect allows youth to demon-
strate their skills of exper-
tise in picture taking. This
project is taught by some of
the best photographers in
the county.

CERVICAL CANCER
Every sexually active woman should know that cancer of the cervix
is caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV), which is sexually
transmitted. Usually, the infection that HPV causes in the cervix is
not long-lasting. If the HPV does not go away, the virus may cause
cervix cells to change and become pre-cancerous. However, it is
important to note that pre-cancerous cells are not cancer and that most
cells with early pre-cancer changes return to normal on their own. In
any case, it is important for women to undergo a Pap smear test to
detect cell abnormalities. If cells are found to develop abnormally, a
process called“dysplasia,” the condition can be monitored and treated
if necessary.
Abnormal cells can be detected by a laboratory test on a small sample of
cells taken from the cervix. This is often called a cervical smear test and
is required every three to five years. For more information on cervical

When it comes to cats, the
experts agree: Leave those
whiskers on Whiskers alone.
That’s the advice of animal
experts when it comes to vi-
brissae, the technical name
for whiskers. They serve a
purpose and it’s not a good
idea to cut or trim them, as
many pet owners feel they
should.
“It’s best to just leave them
alone,” says Dr. Bonnie Bea-
ver, an animal behavior ex-
pert at Texas A&M Univer-
sity’s College of Veterinary
Medicine & Biomedical Sci-
ences.
“Some pet owners might
get the urge to take out some
scissors and give some long
whiskers a little trim, but
they should not. Whiskers
serve a very real purpose
– they are like a sensory de-
vice for the dog or cat.
“Especially in cats, whis-
kers keep the animal from
bumping into things at night
and help with depth percep-
tion. They help the animal
decide where it’s going, so it’s
not a good idea to cut them.”
Cats can have whiskers on
the sides of their face, under
their chin, above their eyes
and on the back of their front
legs. The average cat has be-
tween 20 and 30 whiskers.
Whiskers are attached to
a nerve under the skin, and
these whiskers can provide
cats with all sorts of infor-
mation. They can tell the
animal about its immediate
surroundings and also help
it move in closed-in areas
where space is tight.
“Sometimes, whiskers will
naturally fall off the animal,”
Beaver explains. “If this
happens, it’s nothing to be
alarmed about. Over time,
the whisker will eventually
grow back.”
Dogs use their whiskers
in the same way as cats do,
Beaver says, “but because
cats are more nocturnal,
they tend to rely on their
whiskers a little more.”
“We know cats can feel
breezes by using their whis-
kers, and they can also use
them to detect such things as
high grasses,” she says. “All
of this goes back to their abil-
ity to hunt in the wild. They
need whiskers to do certain
things.”
The slightest touch of a
cat’s whiskers will result in
the blinking or closing of its
eyes, a natural reaction that
goes back to the animal’s
hunting background.
Studies have shown that
cats with poor eyesight will
use their whiskers much like
a person uses a cane – as a
sort of guide to help it ma-
neuver through a room or an
area.
“That’s why it’s best to
leave the whiskers alone,”
Beaver adds. “Your cat or dog
will appreciate a nice brush-
ing much more.”
