Lesson Plan Title: Superhero! The Flash ^______^
Curriculum-Framing Questions
Essential Question How fast are you?
What are the maximum distance students can run?
What is the shortest/fastest time that can be achieved by a
student? (When and where)
What is the relationship between two different
measurements?( meter to centimeters)

How fast you can go for a fixed distance?

Unit Questions
How to convert speed from one unit of measurement to
another?

What is the average speed for a student from the same

class regarding for a fixed distance?

What is the definition of acceleration?

Compare between two simple measurements for instance,
the conversion from “m to cm”.
Content Questions Calculate the time and distance.
Determine the speed and explain briefly about velocity.

Lesson Summary
♦ Rates (Speed) is a common thing in our life. However, many people do not realize that we
experience rates in our daily life. Inside the class room, students are asked to convert
from 10mm to cm using their own ruler. Next, students are asked to observe and compare
two unit measurements from one 100cm ruler.
♦ Afterwards, students need to go to the school sprint track and measure the 100 meter
track using measuring tape. Next, each student has to take part in the 100 meter sprint
where two students are chosen to be a time keeper and score keeper respectively.
Then, they have to split up into two groups based on gender. Similarly, each group has to
elect their own time keeper and score keeper.
For each gender, student will take turn running and their time will be recorded by their own
time keeper and score keeper.
♦ After all the attempts have been done, students are asked to go back to their classroom.
♦ Next, they will be asked to calculate the rates based on their own speeds. Note: Each
individual needs to do the computation involving their own rates.
♦ They need to understand and apply this formula in their exercise
Distance/Time = Speed (Rate).
♦ By listing down all the values of the speed of the students, students should be able to
evaluate the average speed of the whole class. Then, they will be asked to compute the
average speed by gender. The formula of average concept is obtained from the previous
subtopic which is known as ‘The Proportion’ and ‘Ratio’.
♦ Based on the average of the speed and the concept of average itself, students need to
explain the general concept of acceleration briefly. Then, the teacher will explain the
concept using some simple physics knowledge so then, the students might be able to
apply it in the future study. Page 2 of 5

Student Objectives and Learning Outcomes:

Students
Students collect data from three different groups so as to:
• Compare data from the three groups.
• Interpret the collected data.
• Make conclusions based on these comparisons

Lesson Outcomes Include:

• Use the ratio and proportion method (previous subtopics) to calculate the collected data.
• Explore patterns and relationships between data.
• Learn to conduct a collaborative study and make comparative analyses for three groups.
• Collect important information regarding the different types of gender and analyze the
information and reach conclusions. (Interactive study: Which gender has higher speed?)
• Evaluate the mathematics problems and compare the results between genders.

Skills developed:
 Students develop the skill of observation.
 Students develop the skill of leadership & organizing.
 Students develop the skill of collecting, analyzing & presenting data.
 Students develop creative skills.
 Students develop skills of measuring.
 Students learn to collaborate and work in teams in class.

Plan outline:
Sultan Ismail College is situated in the heart of Kota Bharu. Students from Class 3 Amanah
decide to work on the running speed issue and propose plan of action. Inside the class room,
students are asked to convert from 10mm to cm using their own ruler. Next, students are asked
to observe and compare two unit measurements from one 100cm ruler. Afterwards, students
need to go to the school sprint track and measure the 100 meter track using measuring tape.
