 The Numerical System

The major scale is the king of all scales. So the numerical system was developed on the basis of Major scale. The interval
sequence of the major scale is leveled as “1-2-3-4-5-6-7” and the structure of other scales or modes are expressed with the
reference of the major scale structure. Say

C Major Scale: C-D-E-F-G-A-B C Minor Scale: C-D-Eb-F-G-Ab-Bb

This illustration shows that in the numerical system except the 3-4, all other intervals are one step or a full step or a tone
apart. The 3-4 interval is a half step or a semi tone. This is like

The degree is the no. of a note in any scale. The first degree means the first note of a scale and so on. So that’s all about the
basic of numerical system. All musicologist prefer either this or the “Cipher Formula” to describe a scale or mode.

Description of Diatonic Modes

The seven modes of a diatonic scale with construction and fret diagram are given here.

Ionian (Major mode) Starts from the 1st Note of a Major Scale

1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6 - 7 :- it is exactly the Major Scale

Dorian (Minor mode) Starts from the 2nd Note of a Major Scale

1 - 2 - b3 - 4 - 5 - 6 - b7 :- it is the Minor Scale with sharper 6th

 Phrygian (Minor mode) Starts from the 3rd Note of a Major Scale

1 - b2 - b3 - 4 - 5 - b6 - b7 :- it is the Minor Scale with flatted 2nd

Lydian (Major mode) Starts from the 4th Note of a Major Scale

1 - 2 - 3 - #4 - 5 - 6 - 7 :- it is the Major Scale with sharper 4th

Mixolydian (Major mode) Starts from the 5th Note of a Major Scale

1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6 - b7 :- it is the Major Scale with Minor 7th

Aeolian (Minor mode) Starts from the 6th Note of a Major Scale

1 - 2 - b3 - 4 - 5 - b6 - b7 :- it is the exactly Minor Scale

Locrian (Minor mode) Starts from the 7th Note of a Major Scale

1 - b2 - b3 - 4 - b5 - b6 - b7 :- it is the Minor Scale with flatted 2nd & 5th
