New York / New Jersey Telephone switching station. Bell + Gray, takes it's inspiration from the
inventor of the telephone and the controversy surrounding his pivotal creation. There is much
speculation and intrigue surrounding the birth of the telephone and there have been countless
court cases, books, and patent battles regarding the subject.
Elisha Gray, a professor at Oberlin College, applied for a caveat (an announcement of an invention)
of the telephone on the same day Alexander Graham Bell applied for his patent of the telephone.
The date was February 14th, 1876. Bell was the fifth entry of that day, while Gray was the 39th.
Therefore, the U.S. Patent Office awarded Bell with the first patent for a telephone, US Patent
Number 174,465 rather than honor Grays caveat.
To this day many people know the name Bell but the history of the telephone and the history of 8
Erie Street would be incomplete without honoring the ingenuity and innovation of both Elisha Gray
and Alexander Graham Bell.
