Well wasn’t 2009 quite a year for Formula 1?

With excitement from the very beginning in Melbourne

right through to the intoxicating last race in Abu Dhabi, sport doesn’t come more exciting than that!
So with 09’s Crown firmly on British champion Jenson Button’s head, let’s see what 2010 has to
offer. A brief overview shows that this year will be no anti-climax with 4 all new teams, new rules
and regulations, new drivers and the ultimate selection of tracks from around the globe.

So with all these alterations we thought to assemble a guide for this year in order for you to gain the
most from the world’s greatest motoring event. Gentlemen start your engines!
2010 Rule Changes
2010 although will not see the same drastic
changes as 09, it will be the first year since
1993 that each car has to begin the race with
race fuel on-board. The new regulations state
that no car is to stop for refuelling during the
race. The effect of the extra weight of the fuel
will push the durability of both the breaks and
suspension throughout each race; however pit
stops are estimated to only take 4 seconds
per stop. As a result of carrying full race fuel
the cars will increase in length by 15cm in

opinion, the greatest battle between the two
with the victor being decided on the last
corner of the last race! However 09 with its
drastic overhaul of new rules and regulations
hindered both teams.

McLaren suffered much the same fate with

the MP4-24. This car also used KERS but this
was not its key problem. In truth the McLaren
used KERS extraordinarily well, the MP4-24’s
problem was a severe lack of down force. The
aerodynamic package on the car initially
didn’t allow the drivers to get the maximum
grip around corners and as a result couldn’t
keep pace with other teams. The problems
were rectified near the end of the season but

T is for Tyres
If you want to get out of the pit lane let alone win races you’re going to need them! Tyres are the
only part of the car that contacts the ground and so they are integral to how the car works. However
it is important to remember that these sets of rubber are almost in every way, other than the fact
they are round, different to the tyres on your car at home. Standard tyres can last up to 16,000 miles
whereas these black beauties only roll for 200 kilometres at a push…

All the tyres you will be seeing this year are made by one manufacture to keep competition at a high
level and to stop the once great tyre wars of the 80’s. As with everything in F1 there are more to
those round bits of rubber than meets the eye. For different conditions to maximise grip teams have
the choice out of various compounds.

Slick
Slick tyres have no groves to maximise the amount of
tyre that can make contact with the road and thus
giving the car more grip. Slicks were banned until 2008
to help reduce the cars cornering speeds and lower
accidents. Though these tyres offer maximum grip, due
to the lack of grooves they offer no grip in the wet.

Intermediate
Intermediate tyres are generally used when a track
is damp or green (when there is no rubber on the
track from other tyres). These grooved tyres
increase the rate the car can clear water but
attempt to increase grip as much a possible with
wider gaps between each groove.

Full Wet
Full Wet tyres have hundreds of grooves to clear
as much water off the track for the car to gain
grip. Aquaplaning is when a film of water
develops between the tyre and the track and
effectively makes the car float. These tyres
displace the water to prevent a sudden loss of
grip.

As I write this the fate of two of this year’s new teams have yet to be decided. So, to prevent us from
looking stupid if US F1 or Campos Meta don’t make it to the grid, we shall just ignore them… Here’s

Twitter

Twitter has very quickly become one of the world’s biggest blogging sites, what? Never heard of it?
Where have you been? Basically Twitter is a service that allows the user to publish a 140 character
statement that can be shared with everyone who follows their account. Naturally here at Inside lane
we are willing to try anything once and so last year we launched our “beta” account on Twitter. We
found it fantastic for sharing updates with all of you and allowed us to publish information much
faster than other methods. So what does this have to do with F1?

By using Twitter we can publish live commentary direct to you of on-going races, so where ever you
can get connected to the internet (mobile phone, pc .etc.) you can get coverage of the 2010 season!
To get a Twitter account is as easy as going to www.twitter.com and following the step by step
instructions. Once you have done that just start following @inside_lane to get all our news updates…
