Technology and Digital Resources

Introduction for Grades 3-5

Mark Noble
EDUC 422
Spring 2010
• The following experiences with technology
and digital resources are examples of learning
activities in which students might engage
during Grades 3-5 (Ages 8-11):
2. Use digital-imaging technology to modify or create
works of art for use in a digital presentation. (1,2,6)

• I think it would be a good idea to introduce

students to basic art programs and applications –
namely Paint or even Photoshop, if they are up to
the challenge.
• Following the introduction, I would have them
create logos/banners featuring their names,
decorated with artwork they like. These can be
used as name cards on their desks.
– It would also be helpful in learning each others names
at the beginning of a semester.
5. Identify and investigate a global issue and generate
possible solutions using digital tools and resources (3,4)

• I would formally introduce students to the

Internet and provide a primer on basic search
engine functions so they know how to find the
information they need.
• Using a search engine – e.g. Google – students
will research any global issue (contemporary
issues, etc.) and brainstorm amongst peers on
a solution to the issue.
8. Practice injury prevention by applying a variety of
ergonomic strategies when using technology. (5)

• Most people are unaware of the proper way to sit at

and use a computer. With children being introduced to
computers at younger ages, it would be prudent to
educate them in the proper way to operate one.
– How to sit
– Proper typing
– Distance from screen

• Have students research proper ergonomic

practices for using a computer.
10. Apply previous knowledge of digital technology
operations to analyze and solve current hardware and
software problems. (4,6)
• Introduce students to basic troubleshooting
methods.
• Educate students on where they can go when
facing software and hardware problems.
• Have students demonstrate methods they’ve
researched on computers exhibiting such
problems.
