advances in Homoeopathy was
organised by National Institute of
Homoeopathy at Kolkata on 19 to 21st
of February 2010. Papers were
presented by scientists and experts
from different parts of the world and
from different field related to
homoeopathy. Post presentation
discussions provided platform for
participants to interact with experts.
Seminar was conducted in three halls.

Homoeopathy could be a
replacement to antibiotics in
livestock sector
The use of antibiotics in the livestock
(domestic farm animals) sector is
increasing worldwide. High use of
antibiotics threatens negative
consequences for human health,
animal health and the environment.
Homoeopathic remedies have
significant benefits since there are no
residues in animal products, nor does
homoeopathy generates resistant
micro-organisms. According European
Committee for Homoeopathy
homoeopathy is introduced into the
livestock farming sector, people could
be better protected from
pharmacological residues in animal
products. It has therefore been tested in
this randomised placebo-controlled trial
to prevent Escherichia coli diarrhoea in
neonatal piglets. On a commercial pig
farm 52 sows of different parities, in
their last month of gestation, were
treated twice a week with either the
homoeopathic agent Coli 30K or
placebo. The homoeopathic agent Coli
30K is a nosode prepared from various
strains of E. coli bacteria. The 525
piglets born from these sows were
scored for occurrence and duration of
diarrhoea. Observation showed the
piglets of the homoeopathic treated
group had significantly less E. coli
diarrhoea than piglets in the placebo
group (P < .0001). Especially piglets
from first parity sows gave a good
response to treatment with Coli 30K.
The diarrhoea seemed to be less
severe in the homoeopathically treated
litters. There was less transmission and
duration appeared shorter.

Homoeopathy and Bach Flower
Remedies
Homoeopathy and Bach Flower
Remedy (BFR) therapy are historically-
related medical therapies. Preparation
of drugs, dosage schedules, etc. are
same in both the therapies. However
they differ with respect to number and
types of medicinal source materials,
remedy combinations and applications,
indication areas, etc. Authors in this
study have compared these medical
systems with regard to indications,
dosage philosophies, associated
procedures, reported outcomes, safety
profiles, and the possible operation of
the placebo effect. Original data and
published research reports, including
case studies, retrospective meta-
analyses, and double-blind clinical trials
are compiled and evaluated for both
healing systems. After the evaluation
authors have come with the conclusion
that extensive testing has produced
mixed or equivocal results regarding
the efficacy of both of these health care
systems. While a variety of positive
outcomes have been frequently
recorded with Homoeopathy and BFR
treatments, it is likely that the placebo
effect operates to a significant extent in
both approaches.

Use of homoeopathic medicines
from birth to 8.5 years of age
The Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents
and Children (ALSPAC), a population-
based cohort in the South-West of
England, has collected homoeopathic
data through self-completion
questionnaires posted to the mother at
regular time points throughout
childhood. The aim of this study is to
describe the use of homoeopathic
medicines in a large cohort of children
from birth to 8.5 years of age, since no
other study, to the authors’ knowledge,
has been able to map the use of
homoeopathic medicine over such a
long time period in such a large cohort
of children. In this study questions
asked about the use of homoeopathic
medicines within a preceding time
period at seven time points from birth to
8.5 years of age. Additional questions
at 18 and 81 months asked about the
conditions treated and at 81 months
who had prescribed the homoeopathic
medicines. Result showed that 11.8%
of this cohort used a homoeopathic
medicine at least once up to 8.5
years of age. Chamomilla for
teething and Arnica for soft-tissue
bruising were the most commonly
used medicines. The most frequently
prescribed medicines were for common
self-limiting infantile conditions such as
colic, cuts and bruises, and teething.
Parents were most likely at 81 months
to prescribe homoeopathic medicine for
their children (46.3% of all prescription
sources) and 10% of medicines were
prescribed by general practitioners.
Confusion about what constituted a
homoeopathic medicine was present in
nearly 10% of answers. The amount of
homoeopathic medicine use reflects a
significant minority of the population
who use complementary and alternative
medicine treatments to manage the
health of their family. Authors suggest
that health care professionals should be
aware of the confusion surrounding
homoeopathic medicine and have
knowledge around some of the more
commonly used homoeopathic
medicines. Parents and carers are
using homoeopathy wisely with
appropriate remedies consistently used
for acute problems. Authors further
suggest that research could focus on
greater information delivery to the
community and monitoring of potential
health and cost benefits, or side-effects
of the use of homoeopathic medicine
for acute and chronic conditions in
children.

Rheumatoid Arthritis - Remedies in General
Abrotanum Rheumatism with excessive pain before the swelling commences; joints stiff, swollen, with pricking
sensation; wrists and ankle-joints painful, inflamed, very lame and sore.
Actea spicata Arthritis of small joints especially wrist, fingers, ankles, toes; character of pain is tearing and tingling;
pains worse from touch and motion; swollen and red joints with slight fatigue
Apis mellifica Arthritis with oedema of the hands and feet without thirst with sensitiveness to touch; character of pain:
burning, stringing, sore and suddenly migrating from one part to another.
Belladonna Shiny, swollen joints of first stage inflammation; shooting pain shifting rapidly; affected joint is with heat,
redness, throbbing and burning pain; arthritic affection with subcutaneous red streak
Benzoicum Tearing and stitching pain in smaller joints with redness and swelling, worse at night; cracking sound

low potency.
