Project Description:
The narrative must not exceed 1,000 words, must be typed, double-spaced, and on
plain white paper. In developing the narrative, Clubs should refer to the judging criteria
and score sheet. Please refer to the section entitled, "Entries," #4 for questions that
should be addressed in the narrative to assist judges in evaluating your submission.

The winning entries at the District Conferences must reach the International Office by
June 1st to be considered in the International competition.

 Lifeline is one of the longest ongoing service projects of Altrusa

International, Inc. of Montrose, CO. It targets the elderly population in

the community who live alone so that they may contact emergency

help when in need. The Lifeline unit provides a priceless sense of

security to the subscriber, peace of mind for the family members and

often allows the elderly to remain in their own homes for a longer

period of time. Without this service many individuals would find

themselves in assisted living or nursing home care where their

independence is compromised and the personal expense much greater.

The objective in continuing this project is to provide this essential

service to individuals of the community at a minimal cost to sustain

their independent living.

Lifeline consists of a base unit that is plugged into a phone outlet

at the client's home and a portable unit that is worn by the subscriber.

In the event of an emergency the client would merely need to press a

button and help would be on the way. For example, if an individual

with this service were to fall or need assistance in any way, they would

simply have to push the button they are wearing either in the form of a

pendant or bracelet. An operator immediately answers their call to

verify the need for assistance. If our client is unresponsive a call is

made to an individual that our client has designated as an emergency

responder. The emergency responder is typically a neighbor or relative

that can quickly visit our client. If that person is unavailable, local

emergency officials are dispatched to the home to verify the client's

health or need for assistance.

Since the project's inception in 1985 the number of units in

service has gone from 15 to a total of 108 with a constant waiting list.

To date in the present year, approximately 140 people with in the

community have received this service.

The Lifeline Units are purchased by the club with funds received

through our major fundraisers: Altrusa Spring Luncheon and Holiday

Festival of Trees and Gifts. The annual Altrusa Golf Tournament that

our club hosts is promoted with all proceeds from that event benefiting

our Lifeline Service Project. In addition to fundraisers, grants have

been received this year from entities that recognize the essential

service that this provides to our community. Montrose Community

Foundation awarded $2000 and Altrusa International Foundation, Inc.

awarded our club $1000 for the benefit of Lifeline.

The program itself is truly a volunteer service supported by a

large percentage of club members. Members of the Lifeline Committee

install the units at client's homes and test each unit for response. In

addition, they make follow up visits to the subscribers' homes to

replace batteries and make any necessary repairs or adjustments.

Monthly billings and payments received are also processed by the club
rather than an outside agency which would ultimately increase the

basic cost. Hundreds of hours are donated by the committee members

and they receive no reimbursement for mileage, vehicle use or personal

time.

The benefit to our community is that the subscribers receive this

service for a nominal monthly service fee of $18. This is the cost our

club is charged by the provider per unit for on-call emergency

response. While this service is available by other mans in our

community through "for profit" agencies, the monthly costs are much

greater and often include installation fees.

Due to the manufacturer phasing out service to 46 of our older

units a renewed emphasis has been placed on the purchase of new

replacement units. AS of December 31, 2010 these specific units will

no longer receive technical support or repairs so it is imperative that

new units be purchased to replace them when the need arises. To

date, our club has purchased 40 of the necessary units. Our most

recent purchases of 20 units this year was at a cost of $13,039. Our

inventory of units at replacement cost is approximately $91,000 -

demonstrating our true dedication to this project and the people it

serves.

I got my lifeline device in December. I had no idea that I would be using it soon. I
have an occasional balance problem, and am quite hard of hearing. (I wear hearing
aids all the time when I am up).

A couple of weeks ago, I was having a restless night, as 80 year olds often do. I went
to bed pretty late, and finally fell asleep. Apparently in my sleep, I rolled over and
accidentally triggered the lifeline button. I am glad that I'd given directions in my
paperwork for finding the key to the front door. I was startled to waken and see 2
policemen standing in my bedroom. It actually didn't fright me, and they were so
very nice. I didn't hear the phone when my number was called.

I just feel so reassured that I will have help when I really need it. But I was uneasy
for several nights, because I do not want to trigger the button if I don't need help.
But I was thankful that help had come in case I did need it.

I just wanted you to know that I'm thankful for the lifeline.

Altrusa of Montrose recently received a grant from Altrusa International
Foundation, Inc. for $1,000, and a grant from Montrose Community
Officers
Committee Chairs Foundation for $2,000 in support of our local Lifeline project. The
Montrose Club must replace 46 older Lifeline Responder Units presently in
service in Montrose, as they will no longer receive technical service and
