ADMISSIONS UNDER DASA SCHEME 2010-2011
The National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal is rated as one of the top Technological universities in India.
The Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India has entrusted the coordination of the admission process for
NRI students under DASA Scheme from the Academic year 2010-11. Direct admission of eligible Foreign Nationals/Persons of
Indian Origin (PIOs)/Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) to under graduate engineering programs offered by the National Institute of
Technology (NITs) and other 5 centrally funded institutions (Other than IITs) and Punjab Engineering College – Chandigarh
under Direct Admission of Students Abroad (DASA) Scheme.

All these NITs are recognized as “Institution of National Importance” set up by an Act of Parliament
(Act 29 of 2007) and all other Institutions are „Deemed Universities' and have good facilities for accommodation,
sports and other extracurricular activities.

1.0 ADMISSION DETAILS
1.1 ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:
1.1.1 Date of Birth:
Only candidates born on or after October 1, 1985 are eligible. Date of birth as recorded in the secondary education
board/university certificate [Class X or equivalent] or any certificate issued by government authorities only will be taken as
authentic.

1.1.2 Residence:
Candidates must be Foreign Nationals/Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) studying in any country (including India).
(OR)
Indian Nationals studying abroad.
The Indian Nationals must have had at least 3 (three) years of education in a foreign country during the last 6 (six) years and
must pass the qualifying examination (inclusive of 11th and 12th standard or equivalent) from abroad only.

1.1.3 Eligibility:
All candidates must satisfy the following academic qualifications:
Candidates must have passed the qualifying examination, i.e. Senior Secondary [10+2] or equivalent [See Appendix-I ] from
any system of education as recognized by the Association of Indian Universities with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics
as compulsory subjects .
AND
Must have secured minimum of at least 60% aggregate marks or 6.75 CGPA on a 10 Point scale or equivalent grades in all the
subjects of the qualifying examination.
Candidates appearing for the qualifying examination with the above-mentioned compulsory subjects and expecting their results
by 30th June 2010 may also apply.
SAT II scores minimum – 2000(Subjects Maths level II C, Physics, Chemistry)

Note: The Candidates admitted to SLIET-Longowal under DASA Scheme are required to first undergo 2 Years Diploma
Programme followed by 3 Year Degree Programme in the respective field. On completion of Diploma + Degree Programmes
(5 Years), they will be awarded with B.E Degree. For more details, please visit SLIET-Longowal website: www.sliet.ac.in

1.2. FEE STRUCTURE:


Registration Fee and First Year Tuition Fee: An amount of US$ 4250 towards non-refundable registration fee of US$ 250
[US Dollar Two Hundred Fifty only] and first year Tuition Fee of US$ 4,000 [US Dollar Four Thousand only] is required to be
paid along with the application form.
Foreign Nationals from SAARC countries seeking admission through this channel shall be allowed 50% fee waiver ( Tuition
fee only) provided they have studied/are studying in SAARC countries only They are required to submit an amount of US$
2250 towards the above, along with the application form.
The Candidates from Nepal and Bhutan can submit their fees in Equivalent Indian Rupees. However, they will be required
to get Exchange Rate Certificate from the bankers and submit the same along with the Application Form. In such cases, the
total fee [registration and first year tuition fees] would be US$ 2400 (instead of US$ 2250) inclusive of service tax as per
Government of Indian norms.

Tuition Fee for Subsequent Years of Study:
The annual tuition fee of US$ 4000/US$ 2000 (as applicable) for the subsequent years of study is to be paid by the
candidates finally selected and admitted, directly to the concerned institution, at the beginning of each academic year.
Hostel Accommodation and Other Expenses: Hostel fee and other expenses, which may range from US$ 400 - 700 Per
Annum and may vary from Institute to Institute, are required to be paid by the Candidate directly to the Institution at the time
of reporting.

1.2.1 Refund of Fees and Mode of Refund:


In case of withdrawal after submission of application, refund will be regulated as follows:
(a) Such applicants after withdraw their application, either on or before 30th June 2010. (or) are not allotted seat as per their
choices indicated for non-availability of desired course / institution or due to not meeting the eligibility criteria, will be
allowed full refund of tuition fee of US$ 4000 or US$ 2000 (for SAARC national).
(b) Such applicants, who withdraw after 30 th June 2010 and/or are allotted any seat as per their choices, and do not accept the
allotment (reject or no response within prescribed time limit) will be allowed refund of 75% tuition fee (US$ 3000 or US$
1500, as the case may be).
(c) Such applicants, who accept the seat allotted and later on change their decision, by not joining and/or requesting refund
will be allowed only 50% of tuition fee (US$ 2000 or US$ 1000, as the case may be).
(d) Such applicants, who withdraw their admissions after joining the institutions will be allowed 50% refund of annual tuition
fee (US$ 2000 or US$ 1000, as the case may be).
The registration fee of US$ 250 in all cases will be non-refundable.

Mode of Refund:
The Candidate can opt either of the following mode for getting their required refund of Tuition Fees only:
• If the refund is required to be done through Bank Transfer, the Candidates are required to submit the remittance particulars
on the Prescribed Performa attached at Appendix-II along with a request letter as per refund policy through email/fax/post.
• If the refund is required by the Candidates in the form of Bankers Demand Draft, they have to submit the following details:
• Request letter for refund as per refund policy
• Whether the Demand Draft is to be prepared in US$ or Equivalent Indian Rupees
• The name of the beneficiary for preparing the Demand Draft
• Complete Postal Address for sending the Demand Draft, along with Contact Phone, Mobile, Email id, etc.

1.3. FEE PAYMENT DETAILS:


The candidates who fulfill the admission criteria specified under clause 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3 above should submit the duly
Completed Application Form along with requisite Registration Fee and First Year Tuition Fee to NITK, either through SWIFT Copy of
Bank
Transfer or Demand Draft by Post as per following details.

(1) Details for Submission of Application Form along with Bank Transfer of Application fees
If the prescribed fees are transferred through Bank Transfer, the candidates can submit the Application Form along with the

following required documents to NITK:
• Completed Application Form
• Passport Copy of Candidate
• Mark Sheet of 10th and 12 (or) Equivalent / SAT II Score card
• Proof of 3 Years Study Abroad
• SWIFT Copy of Bank Transfer

(2) Details for submission of Application Form along with Demand Draft
The Candidate can also submit the Application Form along with the required Registration Fee and First Year Tuition Fee, by
means of a Demand Draft drawn in favour of “Director NITK” valid for at least 3 months from the date of issue and also the required
documents as indicated above. The documents to be submitted have been mentioned in the Check-List on the last page of the Guidelines.
NOTE: NITK would prefer to get the applicable fees from the Candidates through Bank Wire Transfer. However,
the fees can also be submitted by the Candidates through Bankers’ Demand Draft, if the bank transfer facility is
not accessible.

1.4 SUBMISSION OF APPLICATION FORM:


1.4.1 The prescribed Application Form is available at the end of this brochure. Candidates are required to submit the Original
Application Form (Downloaded form is also acceptable), complete in all respects along with the requisite registration fee,
tuition fee, and complete set of documents mentioned in the application form to:

Note: NITK is in the process of making the module for ONLINE submission of application for DASA Scheme
2010-2011. The same would be announced in due course of time. Those candidates who are interested to submit
their application ONLINE, can avail the opportunity of the same. However, in such cases, the printed copy of
online application along with the supporting documents and applicable fees should reach NITK on or before the
last date of receipt of application, i.e., 30th June 2010.

1.4.2 Eligible candidates who have appeared/are appearing for the qualifying examination in 2010 can also apply by submitting the
completed Application Form and other documents (except for the results of qualifying examination and SAT II scores) along
with the Registration Fee and Tuition Fee. However, these candidates are required to submit the authenticated transcripts of all
marks/grades secured in the qualifying examination and SAT II scores, to reach NITK latest by 30th June 2010.
The applications of students who fail to submit their results and SAT II scores, for any reason whatsoever, by
the prescribed date, will be considered for allocation of seats against the seats remaining vacant, if any, after
allocation/reallocation to the students applying / submitting results within the above prescribed time.
Note:
1. The authenticated transcripts of all marks/grades secured in the qualifying examination should be attached with the application
form. The marks sheets downloaded from Internet can also be submitted along with details of Roll No. allotted for appearing
in the qualifying examination, name of Examining Board and the URL of the Examining Board's Website from which it has

been downloaded, for advance information.
2. In the case of Indian Nationals, the qualifying examination 10+2 or SAT II scores equivalent (inclusive of 11th and 12th
standard) should have been passed from abroad only. Documentary evidence must be enclosed with the application.
3. The marks obtained by the candidates in improvement/compartment examination shall not be considered.
4. Incomplete/Ineligible applications in any respect would be summarily rejected without any communication to the candidates.

1.5 LAST DATE FOR RECEIPT OF COMPLETE APPLICATION FORMS:


Last date for receipt of completed Application Form along with required fee and supporting documents at NITK is 30th June
2010.

1.6 ADMISSION PROCEDURE: ADMISSIONS WILL BE CONSIDERED ON 'MERIT' BASIS:


1.6.1 Receipt/Registration of Applications:
APPLICATION FORM (Downloadable from The Registration will be done on Receipt of NITK website) along with
required documents and Fees through Bank Transfer and Demand Draft, by 30th June 2010, at NITK.
1.6.2 Preparation of Merit List:
A Merit List would be drawn on the basis of SAT II scores only obtained by all the eligible candidates.
If the SAT II scores of two or more candidates are same, the merit will be considered by according to the following order.
1. Total marks obtained in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics alone in the qualifying examination.
2. Marks obtained in the qualifying examination.
3. Date of Birth (as per Christian Era)
The decision of NITK in this regard shall be final and binding on all concerned.

1.6.3 Allocation of Institutions/Courses:


1.6.3.1 Based on the Merit/Priority List drawn as above, the Allocation of Institution/Course would be made as per the
choices/preferences indicated by the Student in the Original Application Form. A Student appearing higher on merit list would
get higher priority in allocation of course/institution of his/her choice as compared to a student appearing low. In case,
Institute/course of first preference indicated by the Student is not available, he/she will be allocated to his institute/course of his
2nd preference and so on.

1.6.3.2 Allocations/First Merit List shall be displayed only on NITK websites on 10th July 2010 NO INDIVI DUAL INTIMATION WILL
BE SENT TO STUDENTS.
1.6.3.3 The students would be required to send his/her confirmation for acceptance of the admission to a particular Course/Institution
on a Prescribed Proforma to be displayed along with the 1 Merit lists ton 10th July 2010 (either through email, scanned copy,
fax, post) , to reach NITK within 5 days, i.e. by 15th July 2010. It would be presumed that a student, who fails to confirm
his/her acceptance in the above time frame, is not interested for admission in the allocated institution / course and would lose
his/her right. The seat so vacated would be available for re-allocation again as per the Merit List.

1.6.3.4 Only the list of candidates, who are allotted specific Courses/Institutions as per the Merit list and from whom the acceptance of
the admission has been received within the specific time frame, will be forwarded to concerned Institution (s) for granting final
admission.

1.6.3.5 All admissions are subject to verification of facts from the original certificates/ documents and satisfactory physical fitness as
prescribed by the institute concerned.
1.6.4 Reallocation of Institutions/Courses:
The Reallocation against the vacant seats, if any, would be made in the following manner: Only such students, who express
their desire to be considered for reallocation of institution/course in the prescribed format, would be considered for reallocation.
The Reallocation would be strictly on the basis of Merit amongst the students eligible for reallocation in terms of Para (1.6.3.3)
above. This would be done against the seats remaining vacant due to non-acceptance of allocations made to students, if any.
The choices/preferences indicated in the Original Application-cum-Registration Form by the Student would be considered for
reallocation. No new choice/preference of institutions/course would be acceptable at this stage.
The First Reallocation made shall be displayed on NITK website on 10th July 2010 and the students would be required to send
confirmation for the acceptance, in writing, to reach NITK within two days i.e. by 15th July 2010. Only the list of such students
who confirm their acceptance would be forwarded to the concerned Institution for final admission. Any further Reallocations, if
required, will be posted on NITK website from time to time.

2.0 MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION


2.1 VISA STATUS:
All selected Foreign Students/PIOs (excluding PIO card holders) must obtain a valid student visa issued by the Indian Missions
abroad. The visa can be obtained by producing the provisional admission offer letter received from NITK / respective Institute at
the Indian Missions located in the respective country.

2.2 MEDICAL EXAMINATION:

The Candidates, in their own interest, are advised to ensure that they are medically fit to pursue the prescribed course of study.
The candidates may be required to submit the Medical Certificate from the Authorised Medical Practitioner including a Human
Immuno Deficiency Virus (HIV) free certificate from any of the World Health Organisation collaborating laboratories in their
home country. Alternatively, the Candidates may be required to undergo a Medical Fitness Test at the time of reporting at
concerned Institute. Please note that if the Candidate is not medically fit, his/her admission is likely to be rejected.

2.3 REPORTING AT THE INSTITUTE


The academic session at each institute begins in the 3rd/4 th week of July. The details regarding the documents/certificates to be
carried, date of reporting at the Institute, etc. shall be posted on NITK website: www.nitk.ac.in. During First Week of July
2010. Candidates selected for admission are required to report to the Institute as per the details to be given in the website and
take up admission as allotted to them .

2.4 ACCOMMODATION
All the Institutes are residential where the students are required to reside in the campus. The hostels for boys and girls are self-
contained with amenities such as reading room, dining hall, etc. Residents must abide by the rules and regulations as may exist
and are prescribed by the Institute from time to time.

2.5 MEDIUM OF INSTRUCTION


English is the medium of instruction at all the Institutes.

3.0 INSTRUCTIONS FOR COMPLETING THE APPLICATION FORM


Please read carefully, the instructions given in this section before filling the application form. To avoid mistakes, you may

complete the entries item-wise, first on a plain paper and, after proper scrutiny, transfer the same to the application form.
• The application form must be filled in ENGLISH and should be typed or written in CAPITAL LETTERS legibly.
Application forms, filled in languages other than English, will be rejected.
• Note that ONLY one application is necessary. However, if you submit more than one application, you must clearly mark
all, except the original application, with the word DUPLICATE‟ at the top in red ink. All information including
photographs in all the forms must be identical. Full fee must be enclosed with each application. Any violation of these
instructions may invalidate your application.
• Applicants must ensure that they fulfill all the eligibility requirements for admission, i.e., education, age, residence and
physical fitness, etc. If an applicant is found ineligible at any later date, the admission will be cancelled. All admissions are
subject to verification of facts from the original certificates/documents and satisfactory physical fitness as certified by the
Medical board constituted by the Institute concerned.
• Affix your recent photograph (4.5 cm x 3.5 cm) in the appropriate place in the application form. Please sign across the
bottom part of the photograph.
• Fill in details of the bank draft attached with the application form.

3.1 NAME
Write your name in capital letters exactly as given in the records of the high school/college. Write a single letter in a box and
leave a blank box between any two parts of a name. For example, an applicant Manoj Kumar should write his/her name in the
boxes as shown below.

3.2 GENDER
Please tick (√ ) in the appropriate box provided.

3.3 DATE OF BIRTH


Enter the date, month and year of your birth as per the English calendar and as recorded in the high school/university certificate.
Use numerals 01 to 31 for date, numerals 01 (January) to 12 (December) for month and the last four digits for the year of birth.
For example, if born on 15 th August 1991, the date should be entered as follows.

3.4 NATIONALITY

3.5 NAME, RELATIONSHIP AND ADDRESS OF PARENT/GUARDIAN
a. Write the name of your parent/guardian.
b. In case of guardian, indicate the relationship.
c. Write in capital letters your complete postal address, telephone/fax number/email
address Abroad and in India, to which all correspondence is to be sent. In case of any change in the present address,
you should immediately inform The Dean (Academic), NITK

3.6 DETAILS OF QUALIFYING EXAMINATION
Read carefully item No. 1 under „Admission Details‟ of this Information Brochure and give the necessary details of the
qualifying examination. In case of any doubt, contact The Dean (Academic), NITK, Email: dasa@nitk.ac.in.

3.7 MARKS / GRADES OBTAINED IN QUALIFYING EXAMINATION

Write your marks in the individual subjects in the qualifying examination. Enter in the appropriate place the percentage of
aggregate marks/grades obtained in all the subjects of the qualifying examination. Authenticated transcripts of grades/marks
secured, in the qualifying examination, must be attached .
In case, a student has passed from an Examining Body which award Grades only and does not disclose marks obtained by
him/her the student would be required to submit the Range of the Grades adopted by the concerned Board/Examining Body
and the Merit/Priority in such cases, would be drawn on the basis of average/mean of the Range of the Grade scored by the
student in each subject.

3.8 PARTICULARS OF THE PASSPORT


Give particulars of Passport and enclose a copy of the same. Candidates from Nepal and Bhutan may submit any proof of
citizenship in lieu of passport.

3.9 CHOICE OF INSTITUTES AND COURSES


For details regarding the courses offered by various Institutes and number of seats offered under DASA Scheme, candidates
might refer to the table enclosed at Appendix-III. Indicate your choices in order of preference, in the space provided in the
application form. For example, if your first choice is Computer Science & Engineering at NITK-Surathkal, you should write
the course and the Institute in the table as per your order of choice. You are allowed to fill up to 15 (fifteen) choices. After
submission of the application form, requests for additions and deletions of your choices for Institutions/Courses will
NOT be entertained.
Therefore, it is advisable to fill all the 15 (fifteen) choices for the courses and institutes.

3.10 PARTICULARS OF STUDY ABROAD (APPLICABLE FOR INDIAN NATIONALS]


(a) Write the number of years of your education abroad out of the last 6 years inclusive of 10+2. Attach documentary
proof from your School Principal or any suitable authority.
(b) Mention the country from which you have passed/appearing in the qualifying examination [10 + 2 or equivalent] in
the box provided.

3.11 DECLARATION BY APPLICANT


These must be filled and signed by the candidate with date and place.

3.12 DECLARATION BY PARENTS


These must be filled and signed by the parent/guardian with date and place.

4.0 GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS


All decisions of NITK regarding admissions under DASA Scheme shall be final and binding. Disputes if any, relating to the
admissions under DASA Scheme 2010-2011 organized by NITK shall be subject to Mangalore Jurisdiction only.

Appendix-I

Entry Requirements for DASA Scheme 2010-2011

For admission to undergraduate courses in Engineering and Architecture, Universities/ Institutes


in India require the candidates to have completed 12 years of schooling (equivalent to 10+2
system of Indian Education) with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. The following qualifications are
considered equivalent to 10+2 system of Indian Education.

 GCE Examination of U.K. with pass grades in Five Subjects at the Ordinary Level (`O’ Level) and
Three subjects (PCM) at the Advanced Level (`A’ Level).
 Higher School Certificate Examination, University of Cambridge Local Examinations
Syndicate, U.K.
 International Baccalaureate Examination of Geneva.
 High School Graduation from accredited institutions of USA.
 12 Years High School Diploma of China.
 12 Years High School Graduation Diploma of International School, Bangkok / Grade
12 Examination of Ruam Rudee International School, Bangkok / 12 Years High School Diploma of

CHECK LIST
1. Completed Application Form (Downloaded Copy from NITK websites) with a recent photograph
pasted in the space earmarked.

2. SWITT Copy of Bank Transfer / Bankers Demand Draft for US$ 4250 (inclusive of
Registration fee of US$ 250 and Tuition fee of US$ 4000) payable to "The Director NITK',
drawn on any bank in Mangalore [OR]. For SAARC Nationals [who have studied from SAARC
Countries only], the amount payable towards Registration and Tuition fee is US$ 2250. Please note
that only the Foreign Nationals from SAARC countries, studied/studying in SAARC
Countries are entitled for
50% Tuition Fee waiver.

In case the candidates from Nepal and Bhutan would like to submit the fees in equivalent
Indian Rupees, the same would be acceptable. However, they will be required to obtain a
Demand Draft in Indian Rupees equivalent to US$ 2400 (inclusive of applicable
Government of India’s Service Tax) instead of US$ 2350, for which they have to produce
Exchange Rate Certificate from the Bankers.

3. Authenticated transcripts of grades/marks secured in the qualifying examination, i.e. 12th standard
or equivalent. SAT II score

4. Documentary proof of study abroad from School Principal for at least 3 out of last 6 years [for
Indian Nationals only]. In case, it is not possible, kindly enclose the photocopies of the Progress
Report/Marks Card of each year of study abroad.

5. Photocopy of passport of the Candidate. Candidates from Nepal and Bhutan may submit any proof of
citizenship in lieu of passport.
