I am Daw San San, an elected member of parliament and the vice president of
Members of Parliament Union (MPU) of Burma. I along with members of Global
Action for Burma (GAB) and People Action Committee, grass roots umbrella
political organizations request your immediate attention regarding the current
political situation in Burma.
India and Burma have a long history together since colonial times. Our leaders
were close friends when they were fighting for independence from the British
colonial rule. Our leader Daw Aung San Su Kyi was educated in India. We
believe India wants to see a peaceful and democratic Burma for the long term.
India’s help is essential in our struggle for freedom from the military rule.
The NLD has clearly stated its position in the “Shwe-Gone-Daing” declaration that
the following conditions must be met in order to gain true national reconciliation in
Burma:
1. Release all political prisoners
2. Review the 2008 Constitution
3. Recognise the 1990 election result
4. Engage in political dialogue
The Shwe Gone Daing declaration is the last ditch effort and a gesture of
compromise by the NLD to the regime. However, the regime in turn has ignored
those gestures and released draconian unjust election laws. At this critical
juncture, international pressure is paramount in order to force the regime to change
its decision.
Burma’s legitimate elected leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi said she would not even
think of registering under these unjust [election] laws.
We humbly ask your lead in the international community’s effort in convincing the
Burmese regime to free Daw Aung San Su Kyi and all political prisoners, and
respect the National League for Democracy’s (NLD) “Shwe Gone Daing”
declaration. This is our last chance to peacefully solve Burma’s political crisis.
We also ask you to lead the international community in rejecting the 2010 election
results if the regime ignores those concerns and holds the election.
Respectfully,
