Sierra Leone’s Civil War

• Sierra Leone was once the world’s largest


supplier of diamonds.

• In March 1991 when hundreds of men


attacked Sierra Leone’s to take control of the
diamonds mines.

The Winners

• The winners are the Revolutionary United Front, they


are rebel group who seized the government.

• They took control of the mines in Sierra Leone

• By trading the diamonds they reinforced their military


strength.

The Victims
• As many wars the only victims were the civilians.
• Adults and children were forced to work in the mines.
• to maintain control of the diamond mines, the rebels
cut off the hands and feet of adults, and children.
• upwards of 50,000 have been killed, half the
population moved to another countries.

Signs of Hope
• In early 2002 the war finally came to an end.
• new government was created and started to
rebuild the country.
• this has brought peace and raised hopes for
a better future
