I. General Data
• Piura has a territory extension of 35,892 kms2 and is located in the northwestern of
Peru. It borders Ecuador and Tumbes to the north, Lambayeque to the south,
Cajamarca to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west.
• According to the National Statics Institute (INEI) in the last national census (2007), Piura
population is 1,665,101 people, representing the 5.9% of the national population.
• The department of Piura is divided into eight provinces and 56 districts. Its population is
mainly urban: 74.09% of the population lives in urban areas and 25.91% in rural areas.
• According to INFOGOB (08/21/2009), the electoral population of Piura is 1,053,558
people and approximately representing 5.54% of the total electoral population of Peru
(INEI).

II. Economic data
According to the INEI, in 2007, Piura produced S/. 6,402,971 thousand soles; representing
3.67% of the National GDP.
Piura’s main economic activities are: Manufacturing (20.81%), commerce (16.37%),
agriculture (9.80%), transport and communications (8.05%), governmental services (6.13%).
III. Electoral data – results 2006
A. Congress
Piura is represented by six Congress members from different political groups; three of
those are women.

B. Regional Government
Piura’s Regional President, Cesar Trelles Lara, is from the political party called Partido
Aprista Peruano.
His roster was elected with 175,527 votes, representing the 24.71% of valid votes in the
regional elections in 2006, in which seven political groups presented their candidatures for
regional presidency.

C. Province
The capital province of this region is also called Piura. Its Provincial Mayor, Monica Zapata
De Castagnino2, is from the regional movement Obras mas Obras.
She was elected with the 45.26% of valid votes in the regional elections in 2006, in which ten
political groups presented their candidatures for provincial mayoralty.

IV. Electoral data – new municipal elections 2009
There was one district that held municipal elections on November 2009 to elect new mayor
and municipal councils.
In Piura, a total of one political party and two political groups participated in these
elections. Political parties took 100% of the municipalities.
