The Hindu

The Hindu is a leading English-language Indian daily newspaper. With a circulation of 1.45 million, The
Hindu is the second-largest circulated daily English newspaper in India after Times of India, and slightly
ahead of The Economic Times. According to the Indian Readership Survey (IRS) 2008 The Hindu is the
third most-widely read English newspaper in India (after Times of India and Hindustan Times) with a
readership of 5.2 million. It has its largest base of circulation in South India, especially Tamil Nadu.
Headquartered at Chennai (formerly called Madras), The Hindu was published weekly when it was
launched in 1878, and started publishing daily in 1889. The Hindu became, in 1995, the first Indian
newspaper to offer an online edition. The Hindu is published from 13 locations — Bangalore, Chennai,
Coimbatore, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kochi, Kolkata, Madurai, Mangalore, Thiruvananthapuram, Tiruchirapalli,
Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam.

The Hindu s basically a newspaper with much of an intellectual resource as most of the articles in it is
written by people of great repute. It also handles several social maligns and problems of contemporary
relevancy with prodigious way of reporting. Hindu’s way of writing style represents a lot of similarity
with some of foreign dailies like that of The Guardian. Though it gives required importance to news
from specific regions as well, but it never misses any of the contemporary social and national issues that
are of public significance rather than just focusing on the news scope. I think this is what distinguishes
The Hindu from others. Politically, it doesn’t favor any of the sides particularly but appreciates
noticeable acts and condemns unscrupulous acts as well. In short I would recommend a well informed
and socially responsible reader to include The Hindu in his reading.

The Times of India

The Times of India (TIMES OF INDIA) is a popular English-language broadsheet daily newspaper in India.
It has the largest circulation among all English-language daily newspapers in the world, across all formats
(broadsheet, compact, Berliner and online). It is owned and managed by Bennett, Coleman & Co. Ltd.
which is owned by the Sahu Jain family. In 2008, the newspaper reported that (with a circulation of over
3.14 million) it was certified by the Audit Bureau of Circulations as the world's largest selling English-
language daily newspaper, placing as the 8th largest selling newspaper in any language in the world.
According to the Indian Readership Survey (IRS) 2008, the Times of India is the most widely read English
newspaper in India with a readership of 13.3 million. This ranks the Times of India as the top English
newspaper in India by readership. According to ComScore, TIMES OF INDIA Online is the world's most-
visited newspaper website with 159 million page views in May 2009, ahead of the New York Times, The
Sun, Washington Post, Daily Mail and USA Today websites.

A newspaper that delights both serious readers as well as enthusiastic and ambitious youth, that is what
is The Times of India. As a newspaper it has both articles of social value as well as of those which project
the reflection of reader requirements. Speaking about its front page, Times is a consistent reporter in
terms of news that has scope rather than much of a social germaneness. This approach of Times has
made it popular among the youth and middle aged. But it does give an account of articles of satisfactory
standards. Times have restricted its circulation to certain parts of the country mainly metros and major
cities and this is reflected in its pages as there is a great deal of advertisements compared to The Hindu.
But still it manages to be one of the widely read dailies. Anyone who needs a quick recap of the day can
always rely on The Times safely.

Both the newspapers spoke about the country’s larger than expected growth clocked at 7.9. The Hindu
had head news as a follow up for the above news whereas Times focused on local news as well as MPs
skipping from the house rendering the question hour futile. Times’ editorial was dedicated to the recent
issue at Kaiga power plant and the soon to be happening Copenhagen summit. Hindu was attentive on
economic issues of banks and fingered the Sri Lankan issue.

Hindu spoke about the Kaiga issue right after a day Times had it in their editorial. Both of them had the
discussion between Manmohan and Obama in their pages. Times had economic matters in their editorial
today. Reports pertaining to Copenhagen summit have been popping a lot these days, so was Hindu’s
priority.

revelation of men behind Bangalore blasts.

Burning Issue

Today editorials of both the newspapers were observing varied topics with analysis. Both the editorials
were of reputable standards. Shewag’s show came out to be front page lines for both. Till now a
peaceful region of Switzerland facing a new and considerably important issue was covered by Hindu’s
editorial. Minister Jairam Ramesh’s statement found place in both front pages.

Editorials

The ball is there to be hit

In reply to CJI law ministry’s rejection of Dinakaran’s elevation found place in Hindu’s front page as
Times’ front page was cluttered with ‘scrap’ of particularly no value at all. Sunday doesn’t mean
newspapers to be lazy on issues. When Hindu had editorials pertaining to international as well as
regional importance Times had theirs on Shewag’s heroic act that happened the other day.
DAY 6-Dec 6

Times of India

Hindu was keen on covering hot national as well as state issues whereas Times had just one national
headline followed by two other state news. One important thing to be noted here was placement of a
very petty update in Times’ front page. My analysis of Times’ way of reporting news especially this kind
of irrelevancies have popped up quite a few times. On the other hand Hindu always preserves a certain
standard in its front page news articles.

increasing rate of unemployment.

The rising new hot topic was TRS chief’s critical condition. Times even had an editorial regarding the
matter. While Hindu had some not-so-important editorials, today as a matter of fact Times was straight
to the point. They had an editorial which discussed the recently signed civilian nuclear deal between
India and Russia.

When the Liberhan issue made it to Times’ editorial Hindu was focused on climate anxieties to be
included in their open page. But it is a strange coincidence so that majority of the front-page news was
same for both the newspapers. New state Telangana topped the charts as Hindu as well as Times placed
an update on the issue with details.

and external terrorism.

Whereas Times of India’s editorial was about the decline of the good old scooter.

Andhra is witnessing turmoil in its democratic setup. Both the newspapers have tracked Andhra’s plight
meticulously in the recent days. After the climate summit, it is one of the first public comments made by
Minister Jairam, and it is on Hindu’s front page that India will play a constructive role. Times of India
sparks a controversy through a suspicious comment about FBI regarding the Headley issue.

Hindu was keen on the Andhra issue with two dedicated headspaces. However, Times had a more of
readership oriented news in their front page. Hindu talked about the unsuccessful recovery faced by the
second largest economy and the South American issue of Chavez’s policies. Times too had editorials
worth mentioning.
