Lesson 3

“He made the storm be still and the waves of the sea hushed.
Psalm 107:29

Story Time
The storm was terrible. It was about nine o’clock when I heard the first thunder and saw the lightening
in my bedroom window. I knew then that I would want to sleep in the room with my brother tonight. I
certainly did not want to be alone in a storm like this. The wind was howling and blowing tree limbs
against the window. Mom and Dad’s weather radio came on to tell us that there was a tornado watch in
our area and we needed to listen to the news for updates.

Mom and Dad gathered all of our storm supplies from the closet and I began to feel a little better. Dad
gave my brother and I a flashlight to carry to bed just in case the electricity went out. It felt better to me
that at least I had some way of being able to see if the lights went out. Mom also got out some candles
and a battery operated radio just in case we needed it.

It seemed like hours and the storms just kept coming. I peeked out my brother’s bedroom window and
saw that the rain had flooded our backyard. The trees were blowing in the wind and every time it
thundered I jumped! I thought about how safe I felt in my house with my brother and my Mom and Dad.
I could hear my parents in the living room listening to the news. They would watch over me so I cuddled
in the warm bed and went on to sleep.

The next morning we went outside to look at the damage the storms caused. There were limbs
everywhere! As we walked around in our backyard we saw that a tree had blown down on Mr. Jones
house behind us! It wasn’t big but it looked like it hit the roof. We all ran next door to check on Mr.
Jones. He was an elderly man whose wife died a few years ago so he lived alone. When we got closer
we found that there was a hole in the roof. We ran up to the door and saw that several windows had been
broken by limbs. We banged on the door several times until finally Mr. Jones came to the door.
Looking inside we saw that everything was wet and blown around. Mr. Jones said that he had been like
this all night – in the dark because the electricity went out and wet because of the rain blowing in. He
looked scared and said he didn’t know what to do so he just waited until morning.

Dad and Mom were going to help him but I couldn’t help thinking that Mr. Jones was alone in the dark,
wet and scared all night! What a terrible thing to happen to him. I wondered what I would have done
and promised to talk to Mom and Dad later to see if we could help Mr. Jones so that he would be more
prepared if we had another stormy night.

God is the creator of storms. The world needs the rain, wind and even
lightening because they all serve a purpose on the earth.

God also knows that they can be scary sometimes but He told us in His word
that He would take care of us. God has control over the storms. Look at
this verse in the book of Psalm:

He made the storm be still and the waves of the sea hushed. Psalm 107:29
God only has to speak to the storm and the storm will stop. It is under His
control. But God knows the plant and the animals need the rain to live.

Remember that Jesus was in a boat with his disciples when a storm came
up. Remember how frightened that the disciples were? They thought they
would drown even though Jesus was in the boat with them. Jesus told them
not to be afraid. Look what Jesus did:

He (Jesus) got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm
subsided, and all was calm. Luke 8:25

You see God is in control but sometimes storms will come. We should not
be afraid but just do things to be careful in storms. We should also do
things to make sure that other people who are not able to care for
themselves as good as you can – are safe. This could be elderly people,
people who are disabled and even animals.

 Is there an elderly or disabled person who you know of who lives

alone?
 Name something you could do as a family to help them in case of an
emergency?
 If you lived alone what would make you feel safer in a storm?
