Part Five

Camera
• A point of view shot of the dead man created an atmosphere for the audience as
they knew that a person had been put in the bin, but at this point they were not
sure whether the man was dead or alive.

• We used a low angle for the last shot, which emphasises the vulnerability of the
man being tortured. Also this starts the audience asking questions, as they
cannot see who the antagonist is.
Editing
• This shot was slowed down and was a long take because we wanted the audience
to feel what the man was feeling.

• In the title sequence we used transitions to blend each title with each other which
makes the audience think the film is about to start.

• In several scenes there was flashes of light. In the different shots we used with
the flash, it almost acted like a blink, which was noticed by the audience.
Sound
• The sound played throughout the titles is suspenseful, but it also fits in with the
gang culture as it sounds very modern with the beat used.

• The slow orchestral sound is effective as it’s slow and also builds up tension
within the audience as they do not know what is coming next.

• The sound used of the torture chamber is very effective as you hear various
sounds like dripping, screaming and also a chainsaw. This creates questions
within the audience because they want to know what has been happening to the
man.
Mise-en-Scene
• The bins were used at the beginning to set the scene for the audience. This sets
the scene as a bin disposal centre which is where the body is dumped. We then
used a bin which a camera was put into which made it look like a body had just
been placed there. The bins were also used for the audience to get an idea of
how the body was found, but it is never shown.

• When the chair is first seen, this is used to show the audience where the man
will be kept, but at this point they do not know what the chair is going to be
used for. The chair is then shown later with a man with a bag over his head
struggling.

• A black bag is used to show the man’s hand lying there, which gives the
audience the idea that the man is dead.
Expressionism
• No artificial lighting was used in the opening as we wanted it to look as real as
we possibly could, because a crime-thriller needs to look as real as possible to
give the audience a good atmosphere.

• Black and white effects were used to inform the audience that it was a
flashback that was taking place during these scenes.
Typography
• The typography shows that the film will be bloody due to the colours. Also the
font has a dripping effect which also represents blood.
Iconography
• One iconic sign is many people are involved in violence and gangs. This is
shown by one man being hit with a belt and also the way he has been killed
suggests that a gang are involved.

• Another iconic sign is that people in gangs in involved in acts of violence. This
is shown because the man being tortured has a tattoo on his hand.
