Camley Street Nature Reserve Location/Introduction
Regeneration Project

Camley Street, a hidden nature reserve in between the hustle and bustle of central
London and Kings Cross railway.

This project is a design proposal that aims to eliminate all the factors contributing to
noise and visual pollution, as well as to create a more recreational flow through the
site, by not only human visitors but wildlife as well.

Entrance In order to do this, a series of accurate site

analysis, mapping, and planning is
required.

Camley Street Nature Reserve Emotional Response
Regeneration Project

My emotional response to the site was more

positive than negative, but there were a few
things that got under my nails. I enjoyed the
flow of the site, and how things connected
and linked with each other. I liked how the
path was there to guide but not blatantly
obvious, leaving some to the imagination of
the adventurer. This was the picture used to
describe my response, with the surrounding
visual and sound pollution contributing ever
so slightly creating a sort of discomfort at
different points through the site. Also the
fact that it was located at such a busy area of
london, but hidden away so secretly giving it
an aura of mystery, however theres a point
where the line is crossed and nobody can
find the site. Visitor attraction is a necessity.

Camley Street Nature Reserve Site Analysis
Regeneration Project

In order to understand the site as a whole,

before thinking of a concept or proposal, a
thorough analysis of what already exists on
the site must be at hand for reference. To fully
understand the landscape that is Camley
Street, I looked at Tree Locations, Existing
Viewpoints that are used, the ground levels
and contours, and the areas that receive direct
exposure to the sun.

Camley Street Nature Reserve Site Analysis (cont.)
Regeneration Project

Movement is a vital area of analysis with any

landscape, site, or project. There are multiple paths
of movement that all create a separate type of
flow through, around, or surrounding the site. I
have labelled the important flows that are directly
affecting the designated site area, and from this, a
clearer concept can be derived.

In this diagram we can see that the

site and canal, vehicle and cycle
movement all have a similar flow,
whereas the directional flow of
pedestrian movement on the site is
an individual flow.

I decided a visual/sensual/sound impact

diagram was necessary, since the site is
affected in many ways. At the entrance of
the site, across the road is a mini rail, that
creates a slight amount of noise pollution..
Not much, but enough to create a
distraction amongst birds in nearby trees.
At the eastern side of the site, across the
canal is a pedestrian bridge/pathway that
goes along the canal. Not pleasing to the
eye, and quite ancient. In the southern
corner of the site, is more impact from the
eurostar rail. Apart from those few visual
and audial distractions, a very peaceful
journey.

Light and Shade

During my journey through Camley street, I must have been

passing at the right time of day, and month, to be a witness to
the patterns that are created through the trees. I thought that
it would be an interesting concept to create a design from,
and decided to work with Light and Shade, natural light and
artificial light, natural shade and artificial shade. I suppose this
could be inspired by Biomimicry, nature inspiring design.

Arbortecture - Natural Design
Arbortecture, or Arbi-Architecture, also known as Vegi-tecture, uses the natural form to create designs
within our natural environment. It is a similar process to Biomimicry, but instead of using already
instilled designs within nature for inspiration, it is working with nature to create structures and designs.
Some famous names in the field are, Alessandro Rocca, Patrick Dougherty, Olafur Eliasson, nils-udo
and many more. What appeals to me, is the fluidness of flowing design that is created using natural
materials, an effect is created that is almost unattainable when using man made materials. I also think
that this type of design would fit perfectly within Camley street, since it is a natural nature reserve, that
has a desire to work with natural materials. Creating these twig/tree sculptures and nests around tree
tops, and structures will provide a perfect nesting/mating ground for animals, amphibians, insects, and
birds that inhabit Camley stree.

Experiments with Light and Shade

Using the model I made, with an added green

wall feature that I am in the process of designing, I
thought it would be interesting to get some
pictures of my model in the dark, using a torch.
The pictures on the left are what it would
probably look like at sun rise, and the pictures on
the right are at around sun set.

Camley Street Nature Reserve Design Proposal
Regeneration Project

I am proposing a complete, or whole flow

to be established throughout the site. That
means repetitive theme (light and shade)
and similar shapes and patterns found
throughout the site to create a sense of
familiarity with the visitors. I am proposing
a green wall pathway that interacts with
light, and working with shelter design to
play with light. I am also proposing new
reservoir creation structures that I have
created, as well as a new housing design
for bats.

This is the proposed interactive green wall

pathway that will run along the eastern side of the
site (along the canal) that will create patterns with
the light as the sun rises and sets. Wooden
decking pathway, with wooden slated roof that
has overgrowth of vine will create more shaded
patterns as the sun is at midday right above your
head. The green wall pathway will also obstruct
the view of the ugly wall opposite the canal,
giving viewers small peak points instead. At night
it will be lit up along with the trees using LED
hence real light creating real shade, artificial light
creating artificial shade.
