happening in Northeast Ohio and is unique because residents of North-
east Ohio have the say in which projects are funded. This is Round 2 of
the program, which will provide as much as $330,000 total in funding to
up to four government projects, according to the Web site. Last year, we
were fortunate enough to have two projects funded in the Mahoning Val-
ley and would like to see the same results this year. In 2009, more than

Valley natives inducted

into the Ohio Military
Hall of Fame for Valor
COLUMBUS — Ohio flags lined the
sidewalks of the east entrance of the
Statehouse, while 20 Ohio residents
who proudly served our country were
inducted into the Ohio Military Hall of
Fame for Valor on May 7.

Three men from the Mahoning Valley,

all Vietnam veterans, were recognized
for their heroism and dedication to sav-
ing their fellow servicemen. HN Rich-
ard L. Powell, a Youngstown native,
was named the Navy Cross Recipient
for his service as a Navy Hospitalman.
Powell died August 29, 1968 while as-
sisting wounded soldiers, disregarding
his own injuries to continue his duty.
His sister, Pattie Scoville, accepted the
award on his behalf.

A stretch of I-680, starting at the inter-

section of state Route 711 and extend-
ing in a northwest direction to the inter-
section with state Route 11 within Ma-
honing County will be named after
Powell this summer.

Studying in America

A group of exchange students studying in Ohio schools visited the Statehouse and had the opportunity to meet with Representative
Ron Gerberry (D-Austintown) and Senator Schiavoni’s staff. Students were eager to learn about Ohio’s governmental process and
also shared facts about how government works in their countries — Germany, India, China and others. The students came to the
U.S. as part of the AIFS Foundation’s Academic Year in America program and many of them were attending schools in the Valley,
including Boardman, which is Senator Schiavoni’s alma mater. Cindy Anderson of Struthers is the AIFS Foundation Coordinator
who brought the student’s to the Statehouse. To learn more about the exchange program or how you can host a student click here.

French wine enthusiasts end month stay in the U.S. at the Ohio Capitol

Visiting the Statehouse was one of the last events for a group of French men and women who came to Ohio as part of the Rotary Interna-
tional exchange program. They were joined by Rotary members and others for a quick tour and meeting with Senators and a represen-
tative form the Wholesale Wine and Beer Association. Pictured from left, bottom row: Bill Sheffield of the Canton Rotary, Andy Ander-
