ELLEN

DE

Meet my two examples of

G ENERES & Ellentube...

This lady/team/entity have boldly gone where no talk-show

has gone before. Redefining the way that the entertainment
industry interacts with a broader audience through television,
Ellen has reached a broader, engaged audience using social
media. The most exciting thing about
this new form of media is that it also
allows businesses and brands to
interact with each other and
their present and future
customers-- all at the same
time!
Ellens hosting style is
sort of a combination of Oprah
meet Rosie ODonnell. She has the
class and smarts to address current
topics in a fun, hip and intelligent way;
leaving room to interact with her audience in ways that
are only now becoming prominent. Using Ellentube,
Instagram, and Twitter, Ellens team share a wide variety of
articles, videos, selfies and links. The seamless part of their
operation includes a level of transparency that endorses
their authority.

The first Ellen tidbit that I stumbled on, back in March of

this year, was an episode where they paired a video interaction,
a well-known celebrity (Adele) and JUMBA JUICE. This was new
it was entertaining. I couldnt figure out exactly what she was
doing with this whole online
conversation BUT that did not
ING:
stop me from taking notes.

about this particular example
was the fact that the conversation
went above and beyond a prank to
share with her audience. JUMBA JUICE actually responded
to Ellens tweets and featured their own coupon for a Swishy
Chug a crazy made-up drink that Adele had requested.

It actually feels like were invited to an open-ended

conversation about this great country of ours.
The Trudeau government has used social media
in a number of interesting ways:
(1) LIVE STREAMING and videos of appearances and
events has given us prime-seating and a wider access.
(2) TWEETS addressing current events
(recently tweeting Canadas sympathies.)
(3) TWITTER Conversations.
For example, @JustinTrudeau s
invitation for an online
TWITTER chat about
how we can better
support Canadian
youth.
(4) Email/RSS feeds:
(newsletters and updates for feedback and fundraisin)g
Using platforms like Twitter, and comments coming
directly from @JustinTrudeau has given us a better idea of who
our Prime Minister is as a person. (True, it could be Team Justin,
or Justin himself, BUT it is still speaks to his brand.)

>> Your next job is figuring out how you can play with what it gives you.
Ellen continues to engage he audience: mentioning how they can access her on platforms
and highlighting cool stuff her followers have posted on her show-- How cool it that?

There is an informal, approachable tone to Trudeaus

social media narrative, making the message more
personable; promoting an accessible, accountable
way of openly communicating whats important
to CANADA in the now.

So heres where it gets a little bit tricky. There are lots of people out there in the world and tons of businesses that are looking at how
social media can be used to further their cause, build a brand, and generate sales. In our struggles to make a success out of any
business, I think that we sometimes forget who our business is for: Business is built by and for people. In all my reading and research,
Ive visited lots and lots of companies that know their market, some that have an idea, and a lot that arent sure.

They need to look at what kind of relationship theyre trying to build and who their audience is. Without a clearer
sense of their purpose and how it relates to all that theyre doing online their current social media presence
might seem more like what websites were all about back in the 90s. With all the social media platforms and all the
ways that we can share media and materials online, it stands to reason that a group of entertainers and
performers can generate an engaging, original way of interacting with their online community.

How do they use their social media platforms? >> @OttawaMIC is on Twitter and Facebook.
Theyve got profile pages where they share periodic updates, advertise events and post links to websites, articles
and other news-feeds. Its kind of like an e-bulletin board. (This is not a bad thing its just that its only half of
the social media conversation.)

The Ottawa Music Industry Coalition (@OttawaMIC.) is a start-up community for music professionals,
my hunch is that theyre trying to build an accountable, professional network for the industry here in Ottawa.
