Program Speaker: Peggy Kennedy

Local author, Peggy Kennedy, spoke to us about her book that was published last year.
Approaching Neverland, A memoir of Epic Tragedy & Happily Ever After took Peggy
five years to write and is the story of her family’s journey through her mother’s mental illness.
She described it as the most difficult and gratifying time in her life. Peggy was the youngest of
five children in the Kennedy family. Her mom’s mental illness was very much “the family
secret”, as it would have been for any family in the 60’s and 70’s.
Kennedy's childhood was marked by shame, secrecy, and her mother's numerous
hospitalizations for acute bipolar disorder. Yet regardless of her mother's transgressions,
Kennedy is the first to tell you that she had a wonderful mother.
Despite her illness, Barbara Kennedy was a complete person and a pillar of strength for the family through trying times:
her sister’s murder, her brother’s diagnosis of AIDS, another brother’s tragic car accident, and her father’s early
Alzheimer’s Disease.
Some studies estimate that some form of mental illness affects one in four families. The National
Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) provides assistance for such families. There is a NAMI walk
this weekend at Speedway Meadows in Golden Gate Park. For more information on NAMI,
