Announcements

SPECIAL EVENING PROGRAM ON AUGUST 12
th

Mark your calendars for a special visit from the PresidentElect of
Rotary International, Ravi Ravindran, from the Rotary Club of
Colombo, Sri Lanka. Ravi will be the the world-wide president of
Rotary International during 2015 and 2016. It is a rare opportunity
for our Club to have the President-elect attend our meeting. Invite
your friends, neighbors and spouses to this very special event!!

TGIF Social Another Fun Evening
Eighteen Rotarians and spouses collected last Friday for the
monthly TGIF Social of Moraga Rotary at the Dochterman
home. Wine flowed freely and delicious snacks and hors
doeuvres were enjoyed by all. These very informal Club
social events provide great conversation and fellowship. The
August Social will be on Friday the 29th at the home of Frank
and Linda May; and September 26 will be at Sue McCaffreys
home. Put these dates on your calendar and join in the
fellowship.

OMPA Swim Meet August 8

OMPA Chair Nora Avelar-Martin reported that sign-ups to
work at our upcoming event are going well. We still need a
few volunteers on Sunday morning. Nora asked any
members with large coolers to bring them to the next
meeting so that we can use them for drink storage
throughout the weekend. Mark them with your name so that
they can be easily returned to you after the event. Debbie
Roessler is also looking for some plastic containers for
grated parmesan cheese.

It is imperative to get everyones help in pulling off a
successful fundraising effort. OMPA not only makes a lot of
money for the club (it is our 2
nd
largest fundraiser), but is
also a great way to display Rotary to the community. If you
have not done so already, let Nora know when you are able
to work!!

The Program

The program today was a presented by Chrissy Orangio, a
Program Coordinator for the Global Student Embassy. She
was introduced by President Debbie Roessler. Chrissy is
a Rotary Ambassador Scholar who travelled to Capetown,
South Africa to work on ecology based projects. After
returning back to the USA in 2012, Chrissy has been
working with The Global Student Embassy (GSE).

Chrissy Orangio from GSE Talking to the Club Today!!

Chrissy described the work that GSE is doing with local
students providing global leadership education, project-
based learning and community service and cross-cultural
collaboration. A flyer is attached to this newsletter that
better describes the programs offered by GSE.

In Northern California, GSE is working with several local
schools developing and improving vegetable gardens to
provide fresh vegetables to local food banks. Campolindo
High School is one of the participating schools and has a
very active garden

In Nicaragua the emphasis is on organic gardens producing
both food for the students and an outdoor classroom. In
Ecuador, the emphasis is on reforestation efforts.

There is a student cultural exchange program sending our
local students to Ecuador and Nicaragua as well as
providing scholarships to bring Latin American students to
the learn about the GSE programs in the United States.

GSE is asking for Rotarys help in building a greenhouse in
their Campolindo garden to further education efforts and

allow the students to grow and sell seedlings. This allows
the gardens to produce more food at less cost.

Chrissy invited everyone to a garden work party at
Campolindo this Thursday from 4 until 6 in the afternoon.

The meeting was adjourned by President Debbie but not
before the lottery was won by Roger Gregory holding the
ticket for Herb Wehmeyer. Luckily, the marble jar has
reappeared but did not surrender the white marble.

THE LAST WORDS

I hope that everyone is having a wonderful summer and
enjoying the weather and perhaps getting in a little extra
reading. I would like to recommend a wonderful book
that I came across this summer recommended to me by
a friend of Lindas The Boys In the Boat; Nine
Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936
Berlin Olympics by Daniel James Brown. This is a
wonderful story about teamwork as well as a vivid
description of life during the Depression and before
World War II.

I look forward to our upcoming team effort at OMPA!!
