I ntroducing our glorious President of the IKSA, a Galway man, Phil McNamara. Its his first year on the job and he explains how and why IKSA was started.
How many years have you beenkiting?
Around 3 or 4 years now
Why did you get into kitesurfing?
Saw it in Hood River, Oregon andwas hooked. I saw the lads thereand it looked amazing. Then I sawit in Thailand and said I had tolearn. I was supposed to be therefor a wedding, but spent most ofthe time on the beach, gettinglessons from an ex Israeli armyofficer who ran the local school.(www.kiteboardingasia.com)
What was your first kite?
It was a 2005 12m Naish Boxerthat a dodgy school in Tarifa soldme for 600 euro – with no bar. Ididn’t have a clue how much I wasbeing ripped off. Then I bought avery dodgy F1 that a dodgycharacter from Galway sold to me.
Wow...so you’ve been around theblock...any good accidentstories?
With that same dodgy kite – nearlykilled me in Kinvara. There was nodepower in the bloody thing, and itpulled me up about 10 feet andslapped me down on the wateragain – fractured a rib. Nothingsuper serious.
How did you become presidentof the IKSA...was it a coupd'etat?
No one else could be bothered!Ha...No, it is a great sport, and I’venever met a nicer bunch of lads onthe beach, and the chance ofleading the team came up and Isaid yes.
Why was IKSA set up?
It was set up by a group of kitersfrom Dublin who had three mainaims:1. Open communication channelswith local councils on beachesregularly used by kitesurfers2. Get an IKSA tour up and running3. Encourage membership, aswithout numbers the organisationcannot be viewedas representative.
Whats thedifferencebetween BKSA and IKSA?
No differencereally, apart fromthe number ofmembers. Theyhave some fulltime staff workingalso, which wecan’t do rightnow.
When did it startand who wereinstrumental inorganising it?
Over the yearsfrom 2001 - 2004there was muchrandom talk onthe forums aboutgetting an IKSA associationtogether, andfinally in late 2004a group of peopledecided to take the first step. A notice was put up on thekitesurfing.ie site asking interestedparties to come to the DollymountHouse (RIP) and have a discussionaround what was to be done. Approx. 30 lads attended thegathering, and a number ofvolunteers offered to put togetherthe first committee with a view togetting things up and running. It started officially in 2004 byKieran Sammon, Conor Lillis, AlexisLedoux, Oisin Ryan and JamesPhelan. A number of other keyplayers who had acted as informalliaisons with local councils alsooffered their support in thebackground, guys like ColmMurphy who had strong personalrelationships with council beachrepresentatives through previousconnections such as life guarding.
Why aren’t you part of one of theexisting Irish sailing/surfingbodies?
This is something that we’relooking into – It may be somethingthat we can decide on during the
