counter measures on military operations around coastal waters.
The three 12.5-metre Littoral Manoeuvre Craft (LMC) will be
deployed by HMNZS Matataua, part of the RNZN’s Littoral Warfare Force.
They will provide a vital link between coastal operations and tactical
insertion of diving and hydrographic specialists, as well as providing
a reconnaissance option. They can also be used on international
deployments.
Built by Hobart-based Sentinel Boats, the three LMC are the first of their
kind to join the RNZN fleet. Their hulls are constructed from a polyethylene
variant, making the vessels extremely durable, highly resistant to impact
and with very low magnetic and acoustic signatures.
Powered by twin Cummins 550hp diesel engines coupled with
HamiltonJet waterjets, the boats are capable of 40-plus knots, with a range
of more than 150 nautical miles when fully loaded with six divers and their
military diving equipment, or up to 10 soldiers and kit.
The LMCs will operate from Devonport Naval Base and HMNZS

French Riviera. This year’s show was held between Prestige President Erwin Bamp.
12-17 September 2023, had over 540 boats on
display, and included 30 world premieres for visitors
to view and sea-trial.
Set across two quays, Vieux Port and Port Canto, connected
by a free ferry service for visitors to the show, the festival
is right in the centre of Cannes, near Nice, on the French
Mediterranean coast. We chose to stay in Nice and used the very
efficient train service to and from Cannes – the quays are only
an eight-minute walk from the train station.
Whilst the show is called a ‘yachting festival’, it is really an
‘every type of boat possible’ show. On display were motorboats,
sail boats, monohulls, multihulls, trailer boats and water toys. In

have done it most of the way in Skyborne, our 12m cruising cat,
too – as the famous boatbuilders Fusion Marine (of similar-
sized catamarans) have their yard and slipway up there at
Manga Road. At high tide of course.
The creek is obviously still being used for travel, as someone
had made much effort to clear the channel of many huge trees
(mostly radiata pines) that had fallen across it in recent storms.
What hard yakka it must have been to chainsaw the trunks
from a floating base and to remove all the debris timber! Turns
out it was the harbourmaster wot done it – and it wasn’t a
cheap operation either – around $70,000 is the word on the
waterway. Thanks! It made for a wide and easy path for us in the
little dinghy. And for the continued comings and goings from
the Fusion Boats yard too. Speaking of small boats, the equally-
famous racing dinghy builder Mackay Boats is also based up
there. Though I’m sure its boats leave the premises by trailer.
Despite its current quiet ambience, this Up the Creek has
an air of imminent great change about it. The little settlement
of Stillwater has for many years been quite remote. It has no
shops. Indeed the only place for a meal there is the Stillwater

The ‘lost world’ feel of Stillwater is because it lies separated from
the expanding sprawl of the North Shore suburbs of Auckland
by an extensive historical farm, the Weiti Station, and the large
area of the Okura Bush, both bounded on their southern side
by the deep inlet of the Okura River estuary and Long Bay
Regional Park. Together the farm, park, river and block o’ bush
have provided a natural blue-green boundary limit to further
expansion of the city.
