Name: Community Garden (Part of the Arts

Description:
• Establishing a Community Garden for the use of the Flowerdale and
Hazeldene Communities. The garden will be planted with organically grown
fruits, herbs and vegetables, cared for and maintained by the community. The
garden will also enable the incorporation of training programs for horticulture
to be established as part of the Community House adult learning courses.
• Vegetables, herbs and fruit produced by the garden will be made available, to
community members, with surplus produce to be sold at the community
market run through the community hall. Any proceeds will provide for the
ongoing maintenance of the garden, including horticulture training
opportunities undertaken through the Community House.
• This Project will coexist with the Propagation Unit program at Flowerdale
Primary School
• Community Garden Work Engine will be established on 19 June 2010, open
to interested community members
• Auspiced by the Flowerdale Community House

Location:
• Currently proposed to be at Spring Valley Recreation Reserve.
• Originally planned to be located in the South corner of the Reserve, it is now
proposed to be located near the Billabong, alongside the tanks.
• Still seeking final resolution on the location of the facility. Murrindindi Shire
Council at this stage has not been able to identify any other suitable location
for this facility.

Funding:
• VBRRA allocated approx $20,000 VBAF funding for Community Garden
Project. Total Budget and Funding allocation currently being finalised.

Management arrangements:
• To be developed by the Community Garden Work Engine, which will be
established on 19th June, open to interested community members
• While it is still to be determined, it is expected that use of the facility will be on
a nominal ‘user pays’ system, potentially with the assistance of other grant
sources

Public Access:
• Open to all community members interesting in Gardening and Training
opportunities.

Project Owners:
• This Project is auspiced by the Flowerdale Community House and will be
undertaken by the Community Garden Work Engine

 Where did the proposal originate?

Community Identified Project, Flowerdale Forum 1 (19 July 2009)

 What location options have been considered?

Spring Valley Recreation Reserve


• Originally planned to be located in the South corner of the Reserve, it is now
proposed to be located near the Billabong, alongside the tanks.
Still seeking final resolution on the location of the facility. Murrindindi Shire Council at
this stage has not been able to identify any other suitable location for this facility.

 What will it cost to build and fit out?


Current estimated cost is approx $30,000

 What is the role of the Murrindindi Shire Council in this Project?

The Murrindindi Shire Council is supportive of this Project.

 What will be the hours of operation?


Still to be confirmed. This will be part of the Ongoing Management Model that the
Community Garden Work Engine will develop, in consultation with the Community,
once they form in late June 2010. It is expected that it will involve weekends.

 What community input has occurred to date?


Community input has been received at Flowerdale Forum 1 and 2. Two recent
meetings with the residents of Spring Valley Road have been held by MSC and
VBRRA to discuss the project.

 How will the final decision be determined?


Final decisions on this Project will be determined by the Flowerdale Community
House and Community Garden Work Engine, in consultation with MSC and
supported by FRC.

 How will I be advised of the decision?


The Flowerdale Community House will be communicating with the broader
community on decisions relating to these projects in partnership with FRC, VBRRA
and MSC.

 What is the expected Timeframe for this Project?


Project timelines will be established in line with Temporary Village requirements and
the availability of funding.
