The Characteristics of
Electromagnetic Wave
The Characteristics of Electromagnetic Wave

1. Changes in the electric field and magnetic field occurs at the same time, so that the
two fields have a maximum and minimum prices at the same time and at the same
place.

2. The direction of electric field and magnetic field perpendicular to each other and both
perpendicular to the direction of wave propagation.

3. From feature number two is obtained that electromagnetic waves are transverse
waves.

4. Like the waves in general, electromagnetic wave reflection events experienced,

refraction, interference, and diffraction. Also experienced a polarization of the incident
because it includes a transverse wave.

5. Propagation of electromagnetic waves depends only on the properties of electric and

magnetic medium taken
The Function of
Electromagnetic
Wave
• Gamma rays.

 frequency : 1020 hz - 1025 hz

 Length of wave : 10-13 – 10-10

used to spay destructive insects like

fruit flies plants.

widely used for the testing of

welding-weld. Types of radiation
sources used will affect the
penetrating power in the direction of
Kamera Gamma
material thickness
• X Rays. (=sinar rontgen)
> frequency : 1016 hz - 1020 hz
 It can pass through the paper, cloth ,
and flash
 but., it can’t pass through the metal
and bones.
> used to detect the organ in the body
organs.

• Ultra Violet.
> The main source is the sun
 required in the process of
assimilation of plants
 killing some kind of skin disease
germs
• Visible Light
> The only one of Electromagnetic wave that can be
viewed
 The length of wave: 430 nm -sd- 690 nm)

• Infrared
 frequency: 10^11 hz -sd- 10^14 hz
 The length of wave : 10-6m - 10-5 m
> used in photography (shoting from the air or satellite)
for mapping the surface of the earth and natural
resources
• Radio Detection and Ranging
 to detect that the plane moved closer / away from the air base.
 dapat juga dipakai pada sarana komunikasi.

• Microwaves
 Used for communication
 Used for cooking equipment (microwave oven)

• Radio Waves
 Frequency : 104 Hz – 108Hz
 The length of wave : 10 m – 104m
 Used for communication
 The radio waves can be divided into two :

1.AM (Amplitude modulation) that can reach very far

distance
2. FM (Frequency modulation) that can’t reach far distance
