About the Book

"The Secret Doctrine, the Synth sis of Science, Religion and Philosophy, a book originally published as tw volumes in 1888, is Helena P. Blavatsky's magnum opus. The first volu e is named Cosmogenesis, the second Anthropogenesis. It was an influential example of the revival of interest in esoteric and occult ideas in th modern age, in particular because of its claim to reconcile ancient easter wisdom with modern science.

Blavatsky claimed that its conte ts had been revealed to her by 'mahatmas' who had retained knowledge of ankind's spiritual history, knowledge that it was now possi ble, in pa rt, to r vea I.

The first part of the book expl ined the origins of the universe itself, in terms derived from the Hindu c ncept of Yugas, or long passages of time through which the world is supp sed to have evolved. Blavatsky attempted to demonstrate that the disco eries of "materialist" science had been anticipated in the writings of a cient sages, and that materialism would soon be proven wrong."

About the Author

Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (183 - 1891)

"Helena Petrovna Blavatsky wa born on August 12, 1831, at Dnepropetrovsk (Ekaterinoslav), Ukraine, aughter of Colonel Peter Alexeyevich von Hahn and novelist Helena Andre evna. In 1849 she married N. V. Blavatsky, and shortly thereafter began ore than 20 years of extensive travel, bringing her into contact with m stic traditions the world over.

In 1873 Blavatsky arrived in Ne York from Paris where, impelled by her teachers, she began her work At first she attempted to interest the Spiritualists in the philosophy ehind phenomena but they resented her

refusal to accept their standard explanations. In July 1875 s e was urged lito esta bl ish a ph ilosoph ico-re ligious society, II and in the Fa II of the sa me year she became the principal founder, along with H. S. Ole t and W. Q. Judge, of The Theosophical Society. She devoted the rest of er life to its humanitarian and educational objectives.

About the time the Society began, she started to write her firs major work, Isis Unveiled, and after its publication in 1878 she and H. S. Icott left for India. There they worked to re-establish Oriental philo ophical and religious ideas, largely through the pages of The Theosophis , a magazine wh ich Blavatsky fou nded and ed ited.

In 1884, while Blavatsky was traveling in Europe, disgruntled S employees in India went to the missionaries with forged documents, bri ging charges of fraud against her. The Society for Psychical Research (S R) then sent Richard Hodgson to investigate the charges, and subsequently published an unfavorable report. (In 1986 the SPR published an analysis of the Hodgson Report by Dr. Vernon Harrison, an SPR member expert in forgery and handwriting analysis, who concluded that the Hodgson Repo was biased, unscientific, and completely unconvincing.)

Under the strain, Blavatsky's health had broken down, and in 885 she left India for Europe, where she continued to write The Secret octrine, her masterwork. In 1887 she settled in London, and began a n w magazine Lucifer ("Light-bringer"). In 1888 The Secret Doctrine was pub ished and, in the same year, aided by W. Q. Judge, she formed the Esote ic Section of The Theosophical Society. Shortly afterwards she wrote The Key to Theosophy and The Voice of the Silence. In 1890 she beca e head of a newly-established European Section. She died in London on May 8, 1891 after ma ny yea rs of ch ron ic illness. II

THE Author -- the writer, rath r -- feels it necessary to apologise for the long delay which has occurred n the appearance of this work. It has been occasioned by ill-health an the magnitude of the undertaking. Even the two volumes now issued do not omplete the scheme, and these do not treat exhaustively of the subjects dealt ith in them. A large quantity of material has already been prepared, dealing wi h the history of occultism as contained in the lives of the great Adepts of the an Race, and showing the bearing of occult philosophy upon the conduct of Ii e, as it is and as it ought to be. Should the present volumes meet with a fav urable reception, no effort will be spared to carry out the scheme ofthe work i its entirety. The third volume is entirely ready; the fourth almost so.

This scheme, it must be added, wa not in contemplation when the preparation of the work was first announced. As riginally announced, it was intended that the "Secret Doctrine" shoul d be a n am nd e d and enl a rged versi on of "I si s Unvei I ed." It was, however, soon found that th explanations which could be added to those already put before the world in he last-named and other works dealing with esoteric science, were such as to equire a different method of treatment: and consequently the present volumes do not contain, in all, twenty pages extracted from "Isis Unveiled."

The author does not feel it neces ary to ask the indulgence of her readers and critics for the many defects of liter ry style, and the imperfect English which may be found in these pages. She is a fo eigner, and her knowledge ofthe language was acquired late in life. The English t ngue is employed because it offers the most widely-diffused medium for conve ng the truths which it had become her duty to place before the world.

These truths are in no sense put fo ward as a revelation; nor does the author claim the position of a revealer of mystic lore, now made public for the first time in the world's history. For what is cont ined in this work is to be found scattered throughout thousands of volumes embodying the scriptures of the great Asiatic and early European religions, hidden under glyph and symbol, and hitherto left unnoticed because of this veil. W at is now attempted is to gather the oldest tenets together and to make of th m one harmonious and unbroken whole. The sole advantage which the writer h s over her predecessors, is that she need not resort to personal speculations and theories. For this work is a partial statement of what she herself has been taught more advanced students, supplemented, in a

few details only, by the results of her own study and obse ation. The publication of many of the facts herein stated has been rendered ne essary by the wild and fanciful speculations in which many Theosophists and stud nts of mysticism have indulged, during the last few years, in their endeavour to, s they imagined, work out a complete system of thought from the few facts previ usly communicated to them.

It is needless to explain that this book is not the Secret Do rine in its entirety, but a select num ber of fragments of its fundamental tenets, pecial attention being paid to some facts which have been seized upon by variou writers, and distorted out of a II re sem bla nce to the truth.

But it is perhaps desira ble to state unequivocally that t e teachings, however fragmentary and incomplete, contained in these volumes belong neither to the Hindu, the Zoroastrian, the Chaldean, nor the Egypti n religion,.neither to Buddhism, Islam, Judaism nor Christianity exclusively. The Secret Doctrine is the essence of all these. Sprung from it in their origins, the va ious religious schemes are now made to merge back into their original eleme t, out of which every mystery and dogma has grown, developed, and become rna erialised.

It is more than pro ba bl e that the book will be rega rd e d b a I a rge secti on of the public as a romance of the wildest kind; for who has ever ven heard of the book of Dzyan?

The writer, therefore, is fully prepared to take all the re ponsi bility for what is contained in this work, and even to face the charge of hav ng invented the whole of it. That it has many shortcomings she is fully aware; all hat she claims for it is that, romantic as it may seem to many, its logical coh rence and consistency entitle this new Genesis to rank, at any rate, on a Ie el with the "working hypotheses" so freely accepted by modern science. Furth r, it claims consideration, not by reason of any appeal to dogmatic authority, but because it closely adheres to Nature, and follows the laws of uniformity and a alogy.

The a im of thi s work may be thus stated: to s how that N a ure is not" a fortuitous concurrence of atoms," and to assign to man his rightful pia e in the scheme of the Universe; to rescue from degradation the archaic truths w ich are the basis of all religions; and to uncover, to some extent, the fundamenta unity from which they all spring; finally, to show that the occult side of Natu e has never been approached by the Science of modern civilization.

If this is in any degree accomplished, the writer is content. It is written in the service of humanity, and by humanity and the future enerations it must be judged. Its author recognises no inferior court of appeal. A use she is accustomed to; calumny she is daily acquainted with; at slander she smil s in silent contempt.

INTRODUCTION

"Gently to hear, kind y to judge." SHAKESPEARE.

SINCE the appe ranee of Theosophical literature in England, it has become customary to all its teachings "Esoteric Buddhism." And, having become a ha bit -- a san 01 prover b ba se d on d a i Iy expe ri ence ha s it -- "Error runs down an inclined plane, wile Truth has to laboriously climb its way up hill."

Old truisms are ofte the wisest. The human mind can hardly remain entirely free from bias, and decisi e opinions are often formed before a thorough examination of a subject from all its aspects has been made. This is said with reference to the prevailing double istake (a) of limiting Theosophy to Buddhism: and (b) of confounding the te ets of the religious philosophy preached by Gautama, the Buddha, with the d ctrines broadly outlined in "Esoteric Buddhism." Any thing more erroneous tha this could be hardly imagined. It has enabled our enemies to find an effective we pon against theosophy; because, as an eminent Pali scholar very pointedly expre sed it, there was in the volume named "neither esotericism nor Buddhism." The soteric truths, presented in Mr. Sinnett's work, had ceased to be esoteric from th moment they were made public; nor did it contain the religion of Buddha, ut simply a few tenets from a hitherto hidden teaching which are now supplemen ed by many more, enlarged and explained in the present volumes. But even t e latter, though giving out many fundamental tenets from the SECRET DOCTRIN E 0 the East, raise but a small corner of the dark veil. For no one, not even the greate t living adept, would be permitted to, or could -- even if he would -- give out pr miscuously, to a mocking, unbelieving world, that which has bee n so effe ctua Ily c ncea I ed from it for long a eons a nd ages.

"Esoteric Buddhism" was an excellent work with a very unfortunate title, though it meant no more than does the title ofthis work, the "SECRET DOCTRINE." It proved unfortunate, becaus people are always in the ha bit of judging things by their appearance, rather t an their meaning; and because the error has now become so universal, that even most of the Fellows of the Theosophical Society have fallen victims to the same isconception. From the first, however, protests were raised by Brahmins and ot ers against the title; and, in justice to myself, I must add that "Esoteric Buddhism" was presented to me as a completed volume, and that I was entirely unaware of he manner in which the author intended to spell the word "Budh-ism ."

This has to be laid directly at the door of those who, having been he first to bring the subject under public notice, neglected to point out the di rence between "Buddhism" -- the religious system of ethics preached by the Lo d Gautama, and named after his title of Buddha, "the Enlightened" -- and Budh , "Wisdom," or knowledge (Vidya), the faculty of cognizing, from the Sanskrit root "Budh," to know. We theosophists of India are ourselves the real culprits, Ithough, at the time, we did our best to correct the mistake. (See Theosophist, June, 1883.) To avoi d thi s d epl ora bl e m i snom er wa sea sy; the spe IIi ng of the wor ha d only to be altered, and by common consent both pronounced and written "B dhism," instead of "Buddhism." Nor is the latter term correctly spelt and pronounc d, as it ought to be ca lie d, in Engl ish, Bud d ha ism, a nd its vota ri es "Bud d ha ists."

This explanation is absolutely necessary at the beginning of a w rk like this one. The "Wisdom Religion" is the inheritance of all the nations, the w rid over, though the statement was made in "Esoteric Buddhism" (Preface to the original Edition) that "two years ago (i.e. 1883), neither I nor any other European living, knew the alpha bet ofthe Science, here for the first time put into a scientific shape," etc. This error must have crept in through inadvertence. For the present wr ter knew all that which is "divulged" in "Esoteric Buddhism" -- and much more -- m ny years before it became her duty (in 1880) to impart a small portion of the S cret Doctrine to two European gentlemen, one of whom was the author of "Eso eric Buddhism"; and surely the present writer has the undoubted, though to her, ather equivocal, privilege of being a European, by birth and education. Moreove , a considerable part of the philosophy expounded by Mr. Sinnett was taught i America, even before Isis Unveiled was published, to two Europeans and to my c lIeague, Colonel H. S. Olcott. Of the three teachers the latter gentleman has had, the first was a Hungarian Initiate, the second an Egyptian, the third a Hind . As permitted, Colonel Olcott ha s given out som e of thi s te a ching in va ri ous ways if the othe r two have not, it has been simply because they were not allowed: their time for public work having not yet come. But for others it has, and the ap earance of Mr. Sinnett's several interesting books is a visible proof of the ct. It is above everything important to keep in mind that no theosophical book acquires the least additional value from pretended authority.

In etymology Adi, and Adhi Budha, the one (or the First) and "Sup eme Wisdom" is a term used by Aryasanga in his Secret treatises, and now b all the mystic Northern Buddhists. It is a Sanskrit term, and an appellation give by the earliest Aryans to the Unknown deity; the word "Brahrna" not being fo nd in the Vedas and the early works. It means the absolute Wisdom, and "Adi-bh ta" is translated "the primeval uncreated cause of all" by Fitzedward Hall. AEons 0 untold duration must have elapsed, before the epithet of Buddha was so humani ed, so to speak, as to allow of the term being applied to mortals and finally app opriated to one whose unparalleled virtues and knowledge caused him to receiv the title of the "Buddha of Wisdom unmoved." Bodha means the innate poss ssion of divine
