A rod is fixed at one end O, but is free to rotate
around that end. Which force, F, G or H show in
the diagram below would provide the biggest
turning effect about the pivot O.

Equilibrium
In M1 only moments of parallel forces acting
on a body in equilibrium are considered.
There are two conditions that hold in these situations:
1. The resultant force in any direction is zero.
2. The sum of moments about any pivot is zero.

A uniform beam AB of mass 6kg and length 4m rests on
a pivot at the point C where AC = 2.5m. A block of mass
mkg is placed on the rod at point B so that the rod is in
equilibrium. Find the mass of the block and the
magnitude of the eat support.

A uniform rod PQ of mass 15kg and length 10m
rests on two supports at R and S where PR = 2m
and SQ = 3m. Zaheer has mass 20kg and sits at P.
Nadia has mass 10kg and sits at the point 7 where
PT = 8m. Find the magnitude of the force of the
support on the plank at each of, supports. forces
