Officials from the Manistee County Museum and volunteers were on hand Friday
morning for the dedication of a new historical marker on the corner of Cherry and
First streets by the Manistee Riverwalk. The new marker will include a replica of
a portion of the first large vessel to sail into the Manistee Harbor in the mid 1850’s
call the Kewaxicum. Show are volunteer Ken Jilbert, Manistee County Historical
Museum Board president Tom Stege, executive director Steve Harold and vol-

Manistee County’s newest historical
marker was dedicated last week when
the Manistee County Historical Museum
honored the scow schooner Kewaxicum, as
being the first large vessel to sail this area
by the placing of a plaque and a replica of
a portion of the ship along the Riverwalk
by the corner of First and Cherry streets.
Manistee County Historical Museum
executive director Steve Harold said the
creation of this historical marker was the
joint effort of many people. He said it sig-
nifies many things about the early days of
the Manistee community.
“It was the first large vessel built in
Manistee and was built by a local car-
penter, Andrew Sherwood, in 1855,” said
Harold. “There were only about 300 or
400 people here at that time, but he had
the talent to build it. It is built like a house
or a log cabin, and is called a scow schoo-
ner. It is like a rectangular box, and this
one had a small pointed bow, but they still
are all square timbers.”
Harold said it was a time when
Manistee’s logging and timber industry
was about to erupt into a major business.
Lumberman from this area helped provide
the lumber that built many big cities in
the Midwest and schooners were used to
transport it.
“Sherwood built it in 1855 to haul tim-
ber to Chicago, and he named it after the
chief of the Little River Band of Ottawa

Indians named Kewaxicum,” said Harold.
“Kewaxicum was in this area for 60 years,
and lived to be 114 years old. The fact that
it was named after the chief is a good indi-
cation of the good working relationship
between the early settlers and the indians.”
The museum director said the display
they built to be placed at the First and
Cherry street location is a replica of the
midsection portion of the vessel and half
the size of the original. The display is to
illustrate the simple construction of the
stacked square timber style that was used
on the scow schooners.
“The original ship would have been
able to haul a couple of semis of lumber, as
it was 80 to 90 feet in length with a beam
of 24 feet, and depth of six to seven feet,”
said Harold.
Funds were donated form the con-
struction of the replica by Ron and Donna
Bauman in memory of his parents Gordon
and Ella Mae Bauman. All of the funds
went to purchase the materials, as the rest
of the work was done by Manistee County
Historical Museum staff and volunteers.
“A work crew of Manistee Clan
Muzzloaders was put together by Henry
Rozmarek and supervised by Ken Jilbert
to handle the construction,” said Harold.
“A friend of mine (C.Patrick LaBadie) who
has been on 10 contemporary boats like
this provided and the muzzle loaders put
it all together. It is going to be permanent
here, and we are going to put in a concrete
base and more permanent marker.”

ONEKAMA -- The
Onekama Community has
taken another step to imple-
ment its forward looking
Portage Lake watershed
plan and joint master plan
with the purchase of land in
Onekama Township from the
State Department of Natural
Resources & Environment
that will become part of the
Township’s park system.
“The Portage Lake
Watershed Forever Plan
and our new Onekama
Community Master Plan
emphasize the importance
of sustaining and expanding
opportunities for residents
and visitors to access and
wisely use the water-
rich natural resources of
Onekama Township,” said
Dan Behring, chair of the
Joint Planning Commission
that serves both Onekama
Township and the Village of
Onekama. “When we were
notified over a year ago of the
availability of this property, it
only made sense to ‘walk the
talk’ of our community plan-
ning processes and acquire
this special property so that
it can be forever enjoyed and
protected, further building
the quality of life of our com-
munity.”
The property acquired
consists of wetlands and
lowlands in Sections 22 and
27 in Onekama Township,
adjacent to the north end
of Portage Lake, bounded
by Portage Point Road and
Bayview Road. The property
is adjacent to Northpoint
Park, property owned by
Onekama Township that
is managed for passive
recreational use, including
hiking, cross-country skiing
and nature observation. The
sale of the land is contin-
gent upon the Township
maintaining the property
for general public use, with
development restricted to
outdoor recreation and sup-

DNRE reminds campers to follow state land use regulations

With the summer camping season in
full swing, the Department of Natural
Resources and Environment reminds
campers that it is important to follow the
state’s land use regulations governing
camping on state land.
“The DNRE wants camping to be a
fun and safe activity for everyone,” said
DNRE forest recreation planner Brenda
Curtis. “Following the state land rules and
land use orders allows campers to have
the best experience possible, while also
protecting our environment and natural
resources for future generations to enjoy.”
State land rules and land use orders
that campers should be aware of include
the following:
Campers at a state park, state recre-
ation area, public access site, or at state
forest and state game area designated
campgrounds may only camp at a desig-
nated campsite. Campers must register
and pay a campsite fee for each night they
occupy the campsite. Reservations and
payment for state park and recreation
area camping can be made online at www.
midnrreservations.com/. Campsites in
state forest and game area campgrounds
are on a first-come, first-served basis,
with payment made upon arrival.
Occupancy at a campsite is limited
to four unrelated individuals, or a single
family of eight. Campsites with families
are limited to a maximum of four adults.
Dispersed camping is allowed on state
forest land year-round, and within state
game areas from Sept. 11 to May 14, if the
property is not posted closed to camp-
ing. Dispersed campsites on state forest
land must be more than one mile from
any designated state forest campground.
A camp registration card, available for no
charge, must be displayed at the dispersed
camping site. The registration cards can
be obtained at any DNRE Operations
Service Center.
Dispersed campers may establish up
to four campsites in one area. If more
than 20 individuals are dispersed camp-
ing together, a DNRE event permit is
required. Additionally, if there are five or
more campsites, or more than 32 camp-
ers in an area, a temporary campground
permit is required from the local county
health department, a copy of which must
be provided when applying for the DNRE
event permit.
A campsite may not be occupied for
more than 15 consecutive nights. Campers
who wish to continue camping after 15
consecutive nights must move their camp
more than one-half mile from the previ-
ous campsite.
Campsites may not be left unoc-
cupied for more than 24 hours. At least
one member of the camping party must
remain at the site during nighttime hours,
or the campsite will be considered aban-
doned.

available at any DNRE Operations Service
Center. Campers are encouraged to be
familiar with these regulations before
camping to avoid any violations, which
carry a civil fine of up to $500. For more

the University of Michigan
will serve as moderators,
panelists and jurors in the
first formal step toward a
broader participation in
the international Traverse
City Film Festival.
The sixth annual docu-
mentary and narrative film
competition will be held
in northern Michigan July
27-Aug. 1.
“Since its inception, the
Traverse City Film Festival
has been a force in show-
ing the international film
industry the possibilities
for filmmaking in the state
of Michigan,” said Lee
Doyle, director of U-M’s
film office, which aims to
attract filmmakers to cam-
pus. “With the university’s
formal participation, we

festival, we now can draw
on the educational sup-
port of the University of
Michigan to lend its exper-
tise to our educational ini-
tiatives,” said film festival
founder and Oscar-winning
filmmaker Michael Moore.
“We celebrate great film-
making, but also want to
offer opportunities for the
general public to deepen
its appreciation of film.”
This year, U-M faculty
and film experts will pro-
vide extensive assistance
in the judging of the more
than 100 films. In addition,
the university’s faculty in
film criticism, literature
and drama will spearhead
panel discussions examin-
ing how to critically under-
stand film and assess latest
trends in filmmaking.
