On Monday, we looked at how women, abolitionists, and workers all fought to gain greater
rights and freedoms in 19th century Britain. Today, well review what we learned and also
look into the plight of a different group of people -- the Irish. They suffered one of the
great disasters in human history in the last half of the 1800s.

By the end of this class, you should be able to


Summarize the Irish Potato Famine and its effects on the food supply and
emigration.
Compare and contrast two different points of view about a historical events.

Why this matters


Theres an old saying (of disputed origin), that History is written by the victors. It hints at
an important point for students of history: the people who write official histories have
specific points of view and sometimes those points of view impact how history is written.
Knowing this is the first step in becoming a sophisticated reader of history. This lesson will
help prepare you for college, where youll often encounter conflicting texts on major
historical people and events.
